Any thoughts on the Band Creator app?

He's got a couple of videos on his website showing how to use it with MIDI foot pedals and various styles. You select a style, record a chord progression into the app and it comes up with accompanying bass and drum parts.

Thanks @Paul. Have you tried it yourself? I got the lite ver., but I haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet. Hopefully this weekend. Looks interesting, if it does what it claims.
@funjunkie27 it looks like the app might require more musical knowledge than I possess so I'll pass on it for now.
So this guy basically tried to make an app that does what the $170 DigiTech TRIO pedal does...for $1.99?! I may have to download it just to try out of morbid curiosity. Does it only analyze progressions using the iDevice microphone, though? A little skeptical on that part. Also not ideal for electric guitar players.
For those non-guitar players out there, one of the biggest new gadgets of 2015 was a pedal released by DigiTech that interprets chord progressions and then comes up with a number of drum and bass backing tracks that you could play along with through your amp, mixer, or headphones:

Not everyone agrees that it works (some feel it should work better), but it was actually a pretty amazing piece of technology and they sold a ton of them.
Look forward to a report....
Interesting app. It has one 5 star rating in the German App Store. According to that it seems to be working very well but the sounds are said to be inferior to the DigiTech pedal. I think I'll give it a try. Also it says through audiobus you can use another apps' sound as input, so at least in that way it would be possible to use an audio interface and electrical guitar.
In his video, the developer says you can enter chords via a keyboard too.
Looks great - and also I think this would work so much better as an app rather than a hardware pedal, because it's so much easier to continuously update and app with more styles etc...
My advice to the dev would be to put the price up! Even at $5 or $10 it's a massive bargain and he would presumably have more revenue to fund continued development.
Okay, it works! Input slot only and needs buffer set to 256. Also no AB controls. But it's pretty good and really a no brainer at this price. Haven't tried MIDI control yet. But so far so good.
I'm tempted. How do the bass and drums sound?
The sounds are okay for jamming around and developing little song ideas but probably not something you'd want to use for anything serious. It's not too bad but has room for improvement.
OMG, This is bloody great. Bought !!!!
This gem of an app is fucking amazing !
It's GOOD. Aaaah, IOS magic is back again now
Let's support the dev everyone!
Cheers,
Johnba
This kicks ass.
There's also a free Lite version that gives you a 20-second taste. That's all I needed to plunk down the measly $2 that the developer is asking for the full version.

It's a steal. Get it before the price goes up.
There's a Mac version as well for 5€. Same thing as the iOS app. I got it too. Some little things I noticed so far:
I notified the dev of this thread. Maybe he'll join us over here.
Hi,
It's Wojtek here - developer of Band Creator app. I'm excited about the feedback the app got here. Thanks for your input, I'd like to respond to it and ask you couple of questions as well.
@Paul
Not really sure if you need any musical knowledge at all to use the app. The main idea is just to be able to play couple of chords to create a basic melodic progression. Basically you can use any musical instrument that can play chords (such as guitar, piano) to use it.
@StormJH1
From my experience the app handles microphone sound very well, of course if you just play your chords in a clean manner, right in time. I'd like to know if anyone could try it with iRig to connect guitar directly to the device. On Mac you can also connect your guitar directly to your audio port.
@Munibeast
What do you mean by "no AB controls"? Do you mean the option to control the app through AB panel with buttons such as play/pause or record? If so - it should be possible. Do you use Lite or full version?
Questions about sound quality
It basically depends on two factors. The quality of drum and bass samples (which are quite good now, little bit limited for the drums due to the limitations of open files number on iOS, there is also separate double bass sample for Jazz) and drum and bass tracks which some, I admin, need some improvement.
Regarding the things pointed out by @Munibeast . I'm excited about future development of the app. Things that have the biggest priority now are:
About the price
The initial promotion ($2) is over now, it is little bit more expensive, but still affordable.
Also I'd like to ask you couple of questions.
1). Did you use external MIDI foot controller? Which one? How did it work with the app? The app should work with any MIDI compatible controller but there might be ones that work slightly different and I'm not able to test them all.
2). iTunes reviews. I'm an independent developer and getting positive reviews helps a lot. Basically getting ranked high helps improve the sales which basically motivates me even more to add new cool features and improve the quality. I basically do everything by myself: coding, websites, videos, internet marketing so sometimes the competition with big companies on App Store doesn't feel fair.
If you like the app please go to App Store and give the review. I'll appreciate that a lot!
Thanks for using the app, if you have any questions or suggestions I'm more than happy to happy to answer.
Hello @Wojtek, thanks for joining in! The AB controls work as they should on my iPad (Air, IOS 8.4). I can only monitor my e-guitar (connected via lightning->CCK->audio interface) through another app (Flying Haggis f.e.) and not directly from within Band Creator.
@Wojtek thanks for chiming in, I look forward to future developments of the app. Would love to see more styles, like country and alt-rock for example, and as much variety as possible in the choice of accompaniments. MIDI out also sounds great.
I left a five star review on the UK app store for you - keep up the good work!
Been trying to buy this (even at the shiny new price!), but for the past few hours the app store has been saying it's 'being modified right now...try later...'
@Wojtek from Band Creator - Welcome! Thanks for posting here and talking with us. I did download the app last night and think it has massive potential! I'm curious if you own or knew about the DigiTech TRIO pedal I referenced above, since this app seems to have so many similarities with it. When that pedal was released, my immediate thought was "Wow, for all the stuff we have for guitar on iOS, I can't think of any app that does this..." And now we have one!
On the positive side, I actually thought the backing track quality was pretty good! Certainly good enough to jam with and have a more immersive experience than a metronome/click track. I grabbed an acoustic guitar and without even reading any instructions, was able to program a single progression with backing tracks that sounded appropriate for what I was doing. (Pitch detection must be accurate - it read that my guitar was out of tune and read my chords as a half-step lower!).
Your suggestions list looks very promising - particularly the MIDI and WAV export features. When I loaded it AudioBus, there were two instances of the app listed, and I couldn't get either to work as an input. As mentioned by others, I think this may be a little glitchy right now, and would only really work if you got the mini-controls to work properly (they would not for me).
Further down the road, one feature that would be amazing would be if the app could act as a simple looper. Nothing even as detailed as what the Loopy app does - just simple overdubs recording a guitar (or other AB input)so that those become part of the backing track. Even the $170 TRIO doesn't do this, though you can combine it with a looper pedal to trick it to do that.
Very impressive work, and I look forward to further updates, as well as my own getting to know how to use it better!
Any possibility to make it IOS 8.2 compatible? Thank you.
Hey @Wojtek from Band Creator , great to see you on the forums!
It's a very cool app you made for us, thanks a lot!
And I'm happy to see you care about your customers and are open for suggestions.
The new price of €3,99 is certainly not too expensive for what this app delivers.
I think once you perfected it you could definitely charge even more for it.
Or you could add some IAPs for some of the upcoming new features.
It would be welcome to have a track for the actual chords too. Then it wouldn't sound all that empty when soloing over the chord progressions. Either in the form of audio looping or maybe another midi track playing the chords? Both iRig and iRig HD work as expected. MIDI remote controls work fine as far as I tried.
By no AB controls I meant that the little side panel for controlling other apps from within this one doesn't exist.
There is one more thing that should be a priority to fix: When switching from one part to another the transition isn't quite right because there's a tiny lag and another bass drum sound just slightly before the 1 of the next pattern. If you smooth that out and trim it correctly it will sound much better.
Another minor detail is that it doesn't look very good on iPad Pro because it's sitting in the top left corner. Could use a fix but not that important... ;-)
Hi.
@Harro Do you you don't hear the guitar output via the app? I'll take a look at it.
@richardyot First Thanks for the review! I'll focus on improving existing ones as well as adding more genres.
@JohnnyGoodyear Did you finally manage to complete the purchase?
@StormJH1 Thanks! Never thought about adding a looper feature and it's an interesting idea. Yeah, I'd rather stick to the idea of simple looper because it would be easier just to connect external, powerful looper via AB. Regarding the issues with AB (double names, mini controls) I'll take a closer look.
@Tones It seems to be possible, I'll try to include this change in upcoming release.
@Munibeast Thank you for testing! Somebody already posted an idea about implementing simple looping feature, just for overdubbing the track. I was also thinking about adding another instrument: Rhodes, piano etc., depends on the style, definitely something to implement in the future. I'll take a look into the issues you listed. Could you confirm that while switching tracks the next progression starts to early?
Best,
Wojtek
It starts late or rather the currently playing one stops late so that the 1 of the current track plays very briefly before playing the 1 of the next track.
I did and immediately remembered how much I value The SoundTestRoom videos
The demos @Wojtek from Band Creator made give a good overview of the app:

Thanks.
You're welcome
And there's a guitarpedal-version too!

Hi,
On Wednesday I've submitted new minor version (2.3.1) and now it waits for approval from Apple.
Changes in 2.3.1:
Rewind button
Added "rewind" button that lets you start over the progression. The button can be configured for use with MIDI controls.
iPad Pro UI fixes
The app layout was updated for iPad Pro screens. ( @Munibeast )
iOS 8.0 compatibility
The app now will also run on devices with older iOS version, starting from 8.0. ( @Tones4Christ )
Other improvements
Improved help UI.
Fixed latency issue during switching tracks. The fix eliminates sound glitches. ( @Munibeast )
Fixed algorithm for switching output between headphones and speaker. The fix should also allow the use of dock connector as sound output.
Also I've updated AB internal settings, which can improve reliability for the users that are experiencing problems with AB, such as no AB panel or being unable to work at all. Hope it helps, I'm talking with AB devs and we are looking for the right solution.
Best,
Wojtek
