Midi thru question

So I understand that midi thru takes the incoming note data and sends it out to the next device, but that is where my understanding ends. I don't understand how this works in regards to midi mapping. Specifically, what I would like to do is:
Midi out from keyboard controller--->midi in of hardware sound module.
Midi thru of sound module--->iRig midi 2 ---->iOS device.
If I do this and set the appropriate midi channels on my iOS apps, can I map the drum pads on my controller to an app (most likely Noisepad)? I have done this successfully when connecting my controller directly to my iOS device but have not done it with a hardware module in between. If someone with experience in this can tell me if it will work or if another device is needed please let me know. Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • theoretically yes. just make sure the hardware sound module and the ipad are listening on different channels. say the hardware sound is listening on channel 1 and irig on channel 2. main question is does your keyboard support remapping the channels each part controls ? can the keys be channel 1 and the drumpads channel 2 ? what keyboard do you own ?

Thanks. I have an M Audio Code 61. I'm fairly certain that it does allow this.

  • Question: The midi THRU will output the midi signal coming from the input midi. But does the USB midi will output what is coming from the MIDI IN 5 pins?

To give you an example, let's say that I have 2 midi controllers and 1 iPad.

In this example, I don't have an audio interface.

Midi controller 1: Midi IN, OUT, THRU and USB Midi
Midi controller 2: Midi IN, OUT (no USB)

I want to connect both midi controller to an iPad via Apple connection kit.

So if I understand correctly, I can use the midi controller 1 as a bridge to connect the midi controller 2 to the iPad?

    IF, I understand correctly...

  • Midi controller 2 output to midi controller 1 input
Then usb to ipad via cck
Some controllers can provide different ports on the OS, but if there is only one shown ,simply set different midi channels on the controllers (eg ch1 for the first controller an ch2 for the second) to route them to different apps
PS. maybe you need to set controller 1 to output incoming midi from the physical port to usb out (it depends on the controller)
