The reason to move on: Courage.

Woah, that's not bad.

The lightning to 3.5mm is only $9. Don't know why I'd need one for my iPad Air 2...
yep, at that price it confirms there's no way there is a DAC inside it. It must just have a chip that tells the device to pass thru the audio stream from an iPhone internal DAC.

honestly, no chance I get an Iphone to be sucked by Apple anymore. This reminds me IK multimedia. The first Irig Midi they did could connect with Midi to Ipad and charge at the same time. Then Irig Midi 2 came and I was about to buy it when I realized you couldnt charge it anymore as long as you didnt buy another dongle to be able to charge it. Conclusion, it was newer and it was worse than the first version so I basically bought the first Irig and a 30 pin to lightning adapter all second hand and then I had it all:my device working as I wanted and one less sales to IK guys.
I am convinced they will crash on their sales and headphone jack will be back.
I just saw the new wireless earbuds, thats one of the dummest idea in a while. The design of the earbuds make them be really flimsy on ears and those without wires would just fall somewhere on the ground all the time. Not to mention the fact that those things would get lost instantly with many people. And having to carry some case for them all the time. Simply retarded idea, but since apple needs to push new revolutionary stuff out and dont really understand functionality all that well. Well crap like this is the end result..
Coming in 2018 – the brand-new iPhone 8 Plus with 3.5 mm headphone jack! It will be magical and revolutionary!
All the courage of New Coke.
The advantages of this are...???
You can make the already more than enough thin phone 0.05mm thinner! But really its just about marketing. Or maybe, just maybe they will make it water proof as headphone jack is the most vulnerable place for water going inside the phone
Yeah but, marketing what? You generally need to have a reason, some sort of appeal to the features you're selling.
Or maybe this saves them money on iPhone production?
I don't know, weird move. Seems like they're just trying something new just for the sake of trying something new.
The busier I get in life, the more I've found myself using my iPhone for music, rather than my iPad.
I actually spend way more time making music (cumulatively, but in very small pockets of time) on my iPhone.
I make patches and loops and stuff in Gadget, I ping loops around in and out of BlocsWave. I do sound design in Animoog, and mess with sounds in Model 15 and iDensity. I hook up AUM, infinite looper and the Ruismaker and Moog apps to have fun jamming.
Most of my favourite apps are now on the iPhone.
Increasingly I don't have the time, or see the added value in breaking out the iPad, unless I've got time for a serious session of finishing a track / mixing in Auria, or doing some kind of filmed performance. Or using Samplr. So that's not very often.
The phone is just always with me.
So im a bit concerned about this development. I was thinking of getting one of the new oversized iPhones for the above reasons. But I'm not so sure now.
Lol!! You are so right
Ok, so one side is usb, is the otherside lightning?
The 3.5 mm jack has worked successfully since the 1800s. There are more than 300 million headphones or headsets sold annually. This seems like a really dumb idea. But perhaps Apple knows better than implied by reality. My prediction=fail.
Turns out the jack was interfering with the new camera and water resistance.

They obviously consulted not one single iPhone-based musician with regard to this decision, so let's all take a deep breath and acknowledge our place at the back of the bus, while angry birds steal our lunch money and pokemon insult our mothers.
now that i think about it i doubt there's anyone in the building there who would qualify as an iphone-based musician
The wireless "airpods" will cost $159. So now you can get crappy sounding headphones WITHOUT the wire too!
My Motorola stereo bluetooth headset that I've had for a few years sounds great and the battery gets about 10 hours. It was $40.
But, these will be the new Beats I guess. I just got home from work and didn't know they even announced anything today. I care just as much now...
Meh. Samsung has waterproof phones. Sony has had waterproof Walkmen since 1850. mmmmeh.
Shame on Apple, it's a real show stopper.
Marketing for newest technology. Its kinda silly when you think about people who understand stuff. But apples marketing is mostly for people who dont understand stuff, and releasing newest technology for those is usually enough, regardless of how useful it is or what drawbacks it has. Also its about the imago of being the innovator in the industry
I kind of see this decision of Apple's as an environmental mistake. As with the proprietary 30-pin accessories before, Lightning accessories will be chucked in recycling bins hopefully though most likely in the garbage. What else can be done with the millions of Apple-only connection accessories? Miniature industrial art?
The other thing that bothers me is that the new Apple earphones are small and unconnected: So easy to lose one ir both.
Do you think they will do the same to ipods and ipads?
Hope the EarPods are water-proof, cause if they fall out often, more chance they'll end up in the water than your phone.
If Apple really had the balls, they’d not only drop the headphone jack, they’d also drop lightning in favour of USB-C.
