Is this revolutionary wireless protocol going to be an open or proprietory standard?
Err, and latency? Is there any proven wireless tech with wired-ballpark latency? (I'm really asking).
And I just spent 20 minutes scrolling a tech site's comment section on the jack issue for, well, not grins exactly... actually I'm not sure why I was there. Lots of all-caps and spittle on one side, and Apple's, err, devoted fans on the other furiously explaining how happy they were that Apple was showing them a better way and removing inappropriate choices from their path. I don't think I'll be doing that again.
I think we'll soon see combined interfaces with what we all need (Audio In/Out and Midi In/Out, Charging and USB) in small neat mobile packages. Like an extra battery case with ports etc...
I agree Samu, and I think for many of us the small amount of extra baggage won't be a problem since we're already hooking up lots of do-dads.
@samu that sounds like the iConnectivity interfaces.
But hopefully there will be more options soon.
Yepp, I don't think IK-Multimedia is 'unaware' of the situation.
Think iRig Keys with Audio & Midi Interfaces built-in.
And Korg might even release a 'Plug v2' pretty soon.
Currently I'm not at all affected by this 'lack of 3,5mm' since both my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 5 still work just fine
I feel bad for the folks who are currently committed to an all-iPhone setup, but by the time this impacts iPad users (if it does) the field of possilble solutions will hopefully be large.
They say those AirPods will work only with iOS 10
That's not surprising, is it? The iPhone 7 will also only work with iOS 10.
That's part of what I think is particularly nuts: they're replacing an open standards item with a startlingly proprietary one: they don't even work on all IPhones. I know there are folks out there who can spend $160 on a pair of headphones that will work on ONE device. I'm not one of those people.
I imagine the wireless ones arent good for listening to music while laying on the bed/sofa
Happened before, right? "Who needs a stylus?!" (c) SJ in 2007
It's just bluetooth, Apple just simplified the pairing process on their devices.
Without beating on the already long-dead horse, my own upside to this Mother Courage move is exactly this, the fact that the market should now drive wireless headphone quality in a way it hasn't managed to date. We'll see.
They will work with other devices that support bluetooth audio too, not just apple products. You just don't get the simplified pairing process.
Well last time I tested Bluetooth with iOS music apps, it caused havoc with buffer issues for quite a few of them, so unless that's been solved, or a solution in the pipeline, that makes the new headphones hit and miss.
courtesy of Greg from FB. A look at the new wireless earpod thingies in action!! BOOM! They look so cool......
They clean out your ear wax too!
Wait a few years, no worries about them falling out, with the magnetic field from the battery, you ears will fall off too.....
And the headphone jack isn't a big selling point on the iPods and iPhones?
) and the headphones will give up hours before the iPhone gives up.
There won't be realtime audio with bt (you need this to play melodies and beats
The future: expensive consumer stuff you don't need and that you have to charge and that you keep loosing because it's so small
Great, I won't buy it.
We all need an extra case to carry around?
The AirPods can also pair with Bluetooth devices
Next up...the iSpex
Can also be purchased in pairs, from Apples.
I seriously don't get all the complaining and over-dramatic I'll-never-buy-the-new-iphone hyperbole. The new iPhone has a headphone jack. The only change is that it's on a dongle. Some here are talking like the only headphone option will be bluetooth when it's plainly obvious that that isn't the case.
If/when I buy a phone that requires a dongle to use wired headphones, that dongle will stay permanently attached to my headphones. They'll be so cheap that I'll have several laying around the house just like I have several Lightning charging cables laying around.
Removing the headphone jack makes sense. Have you ever looked inside an iPhone? It's packed full. Having a 1/2" square of real estate taken up by mostly air isn't a good use of space. I've already seen other phone companies mocking the move, but they'll most likely follow suit in a few years.
Latency-free audio is only important to a small subset of iDevice users. Latency-free audio is still available to those users. And for those of you crying that you won't be able to charge your device while using headphones, trust me, there will be a dongle for that.
The adapter photo during the event showed a TRRS cable next to it, and we will be testing that adapter with our analog interfaces. As far as other interfaces go, we currently have iRig Pro DUO with its own outputs and will share any news on other related interface products as soon as possible.
I can see the space thing on the iPhone, but if they decide to get rid of it in the iPad Pro series, I hope they use the gained space to add another lightning socket.
TIme for me to complain.
It's form over function> Some kind of fashion thing?
example: I have a (very nice) Macbook 12. Love it.
Hate the single C port. Idiotic. Nothing like having to dig up an adapter.
Oh, yes I know. I'm supposed to be all organized and everything. Have the adapter right there when I need it. LOL
The corporation is losing it's way if this is how things are going to go. Corporate disfunction is very common.
Look at Windows and the start button fiasco. It took them years to admit they were wrong
No it isn't. It's space-saving and water-proofing over an outdated standard.
We shall see. Only time will tell, simple as that.
Not a big deal. Going to be interesting at least
(sorry, I edited that post....pretty lame)
This is all very bad news for @IK_Multimedia. Most of their lightning port products will be incompatible or requiring the workaround of purchasing a cck and using a powered hub or getting that belkin y splitter.
In other news AAPL is taking a deep dive since the keynote.
