Awesome!
Been catching up with all 3 posts regarding the iPhone 7/ headphone jack controversy. It's funny see people going like "I hope iPads don't go this route" when in fact probably MacBooks will drop the jack as well (for consistency within the ecosystem) It's not like Apple kept the 30 pin connector on the iPad just because there was more space to fit stuff, it switch to lightning as well.
There's a reason I think Apple decided to just remove the jack: Bluetooth headphones revenue have already surpassed non Bluetooth headphones revenue this year and it's a trend that's going up slowly (even in my country I have started to see a lot of them on the street with regular non tech savvy people) so Bluetooth it's the future Apple just remove the jack earlier than the new technology been fully ready or fully standardized but it always does that and maybe it will give that same technology a nice final push forward (maybe even for pro audio).
lets be real the iPhone 7 will not flop because it doesn't have a headphone jack, "how will I be able to plug my 300 dollar headphones" "what about my audio interface" it's not really a main concern for 98% of people, most people will be happy with the headphones that come inside the box, others will be happy with the adapter (will probably leaved it plugged in to their headphones all the time) and other people will go wireless. From my experience charging a phone and at the same times use the headphones it's not something really common, not impossible but also not something I see daily with people around me. people outside mainstream users will of course suffer (lots of adapters) but with time even those adapt as well (Nobody, even most sections of pro users, misses the optical drive and if you do you're a really super specialized case in 2016 and of course there's an adapter for you)
Optical Data to the Mac - a real PITA, so I guess it is missed.
The carrying case for them is also a charging station, and you get up to 24hours of use with that supposedly. Yes there's a mic built in, and it will even automatically detect if you only have one in (like for phone calls) and sum the audio from left and right into just that one.
Replacement lightening to 3.5mm adaptors are $9 too, so not terribly expensive.
When I go to sleep every night I plug in my Iphone for charging and at the same time a play a podcast to fall asleep. This is something I wont be abke to do as long as I don't buy an expensive dongle yet to appear that I was not asking for it.
Curiously enough I do the same thing, I switch to Bluetooth headphones cause I ruined two regular headphones while sleeping (twisted cables) , like I said it's not like nobody does it, but it's not a common use case, at least not as common as one may think it is. I just don't see that many people doing it, for most people when they plug their phone for charging it's because they're done with it for a while. and when people use their headphones it's because they're going out or doing something active. those two things doesnt correlate.
Wireless is the future, but for pro music, not until reduced latency and lossless audio.
I wonder how will work when, let's say, you're running. When one of them falls, falls.

I can see here a market of training dogs for recovering missed earphones.
And a new app. We have "Find my iPhone", so next "Find my earphone".
Future mods from the past, future.
Following the style of the topic heading, I'm betting it all on cables and dongles and doodads and whatnot, all hanging from the Lightning port, marring an otherwise elegant design and adding a bit more to Apple's revenue. The funniest/saddest but so far is listening via standard headphones and charging at the same: Requires a 2 Lightning port adapter + the Light ING port to 3.5mm adapter. Sad.
It's ridiculous and we'll see how well the 7 will sell. I predict a noticeable drop in sales. One can also already see a pretty steep drop in AAPL stock starting right after the presentation. Coincidence? Also Tim Cook sold a lot of stock about a week before. I think he knew there's the risk of a flop.
I think they were lucky the note7 had to be recalled for exploding.
I wouldn't take too much notice of the drop in share prices. It's not the first time for a drop after an event and won't be the last. It's been a funny run up to the release this time. People were already discussing the iPhone 8 even before the lack of headphone socket was known. Seems many are sending out the message to wait for 8
This alone has probably had an effect on shares.
Only time will tell if an already anticipated reduction in iPhone revenue has anything to do with SocketGate
It's not that there won't be all sorts of workarounds but the worst thing is the waste, it's really un-green of Apple. All those new adapters and the energy cost of making them will be a lot more than the cost to make the original jack I'm sure.
Though they aren't the first company to remove the headphone jack (third phone apparently) so it'll happen across the board eventually.
you think?
Well only when I absolutely have to.
Exactly what is happening to me right now. iPhone is really just so easy right now although I still love my iPad but the iPhone gets me going so quickly with beats and music stuff.
I remember freaking when Apple eliminated the floppy disk drive. Then we all panicked when the 30-pin gave way to Lightning. Sometimes it takes some hindsight to see the wisdom of Apple's moves. Trust me, I'm sure Steve Jobs would have approved of this move. We'll manage. .
I doubt Steve would have actually approved this one. The iPod feature of the phone was extremely important to him and I'd imagine him to use premium wired headphones (and not beats) to listen to his favourite rock classics on the phone. The floppy disk was different because it could be replaced with something indisputably better. Same thing for optical drives and the 30 pin connector. Those things clearly became obsolete. The audio jack, however, is not going to be obsolete in the foreseeable future and lightning and wireless are not actually better (lightning being proprietary and expensive and bt having latency, lack of fidelity, requiring charging and being expensive). Time will tell but I say it was a big mistake and people will not be happy once they realise this unnecessary inconvenience.
Premium headphones using a 'low-quality' built-in DAC?
I doubt that very much
Then again if a user has never made any comparison and experiensed how good the headphones can really sound using proper gear it's another issue...
Isn't this negating the idea of mobile computing, all this extra baggage.
This was my first mobile computer. It weighed 15kg - but it had a comfortable shoulder strap...
So a dongle or two doesn't bother me
If it ain't broke why fix it, well apart from your back
Nope. What I mean is that the quality can be always be improved and that the removal of the built-in 3,5mm jack will give those who know DACs and other means of audio-transfer a push to produce and grab a piece of the market.
Even with current high-speed 'wifi' it is theoretically and technically possible yo shuffle uncompressed audio at <5ms latency so why stick with BT when there is an opportunity to change the market for good?
I somehow feel that the 'W1' chip also contains wifi-hardware but since the specs are not 'open' yet we do not know.
As soon as new products start to emerge be it lightning or usb-c there will be small adapters available such as the Lightning->Micro-USB thingy.
The only downside I see with all this wireless 'stuff' is the constant need to keep everything charged and when power runs out we're 'screwed'.
I was one of those who mourned when legacy technology was 'replaced' with new stuff before I start to see the bigger picture and not only look at what i have now.
People have and always will have problems and issues to adapt to changes what ever they may be...
Halleluja
I thought the 3.5 was removed for the haptic feedback, BT is an ongoing standard, and external DAC are not exactly small, the rest of the iPhone 7+ is hardly cutting edge tech.
External DACs can be quite smallish too

Yes. A CCK plus a Dragonfly (with an ancient connector) is way better.
Which has been an option all along. For those with the need and the pockets. That is pockets full of $ and room for the extra dongles.
So your rationale is, by forcing everyone to this kind of solution, there will be better and cheaper solutions available eventually?
When that fits comfortably in my pocket, then we are back to what preceded this, quality vs size, why not in the phone instead of the extra speaker, it's all gone in a few iOS updates anyway.
