i don't see iKaossilator anywhere on that list.

I was just looking at that. I looks like a lot of fun!

That's exactly what you get, pure fun.

I think I'll wait until it goes on sale too. But I am going to get it at some point. Looks like a blast!

Best tip! You have already some stuff. Stop collecting, start creating before you get lost. I was way more creative with less tools.
    Learn your apps inside out.

Strongly agreed! Once you’ve spent that remaining 25$ (my vote would go for iWavestation during the sale…), the best thing to do is to spend quality time with each app.

  • Save time and money, get Animoog now. If you don't believe me or feel like you've been cheated out of money, I'll gift you a crappier synth.

  • One word Son, KRFT...

  • Anybody use Notion before?

  • Notion is good. Much of what has been suggested is good. You have a lot of stuff that's good. Give the money away. Make some music :)

Do yourself a favour and get Gadget. Tones of stuff for relatively not very much.

    Tons of tones even

Knowing what I know today I would go 'all in' with Korg Gadget (and the rest of Korg apps that 'enable' new Gadgets). The recent Cubasis 2.1 update is pretty sweet and Gadget would serve very well as 'loop/sound-generator'. AudioShare would be another app to have in the collection for file management.

One synth that is often overlooked is the MicroLogue that is built-in into Cubasis.
For basic sampling the Cubasis Mini-Sampler covers most needs.

Poison-202 has also been mentioned and it being AUv3 (multiple instances in Cubasis) makes it pretty good deal too. To keep things 'organised' I'd put priority on synths with AUv3 support.

For a dedicated 'sampler' I'd hold my horses for now...

Tend to agree that on iPad Cubasis, Gadget, and Audioshare are core. I would also add to that AUM (same guy as Audioshare), especially if you're going to get into any of the AUv3 apps and also want to use them on the iPhone, as Cubasis is iPad only. Audiobus 3 will also host AUs when it's released, but will require iOS 10 or later. Ironically Garageband from the progenitor of AUv3 isn't as good of an AU host as AUM is or Audiobus 3 likely will be. On the AU synth front special mention needs to be made for Phasemaker and Troublemaker to be added with Poison to the oh so much more than vintage set. Also must point out, since the OP is rocking an older iPad for the moment, that while Cubasis not only supports iOS back to 8.3, it also provides a 32bit version for older devices. However AU was deemed by Apple to be 64bit only, so no AU host can open AUs on a 32bit device1 (anything up through iPad 4 and mini, iPhone 5 and 5C). Another thing to beware of with an older device that most likely has a worn battery is that a lot of audio apps can be quite the pig when it comes to juice. Rumblings around the forums are saying Gadget 3 upped the ante on this. Hey @Samu can you confirm Gadget 3 is worse on the battery? But to finally get to the original question. Synths. Model 15 is the top pick for VA, especially if you want to learn subtractive synthesis from the ground up. Other notables are DRC, Redshrike, and the new kid LayR. All capable of great sound and much less daunting than Model 15 if you want to go beyond just presets but can't fathom all the patch cables going to and fro. If, on the other hand modular VA just isn't low level enough for you, then follow the rabbit down the hole to Audulus where no detail is too small not have a module of its own. Or perhaps take a turn for the weird in iVCS3, a synth I don't think there's anything else like, and likely to be all sorts of fun for a sound designer. Another special mention there is FieldScaper. In the category of creativity enhancer are the must have Blocs Wave and KRFT. Instant classics.

    1. In fact many apps that are AUs that provide a standalone UI are doing so by using a small AU host wrapper around the AU, so the standalone isn't usable on 32bit devices either. Yet you can buy and download them on the older devices. For, ya know, when you do get that new device ;) ↩︎

Will AUM work on my iPad 2? I would have gotten it days ago if I would have known. lol. Thanks! :)

Edit: I was kind of waiting to get AB3 but being it's iOS 10 and up only do I wait until I get an iPad Pro 2 and get Audiobus 3 or do I get AUM now and call it good. ... I may try to wait until Mon. when AB3 is out and see what going on. I probably will end up with both. Lol.

it works on my ipad3. and my ipad3 is weaker than the ipad2 so i think the answer is yes.

I revisited some of my old iPhone (the few i saved) tracks and it reminded me that i used at least 50% of Alchemy in every track and that it is still the most versatile, beautiful sounding synth in the iOS world, especially if you have some of the patch banks.
Strange that i doesn´t used it often anymore after Apple kills the magic a bit.
There is still nothing quite out there which can sound like it, especially if you make use of the morph pads.
Some of the sound design is quite brilliant and i remember to make whole ambient tracks with just 1-2 patches of it which sounding better and more complex than a combination of 10 other apps :)
It almost felt like cheating to use it sometimes. Strange that i doesn´t use Alchemy 2 often inside logic these days. Have to revisit it too.

  • Collect as many AU's as possible and forget all the non AU's to spare yourself a lot of money and headaches.

Yeah... true. I wish more were AU capable. I can't wait for more AU and to see what will happen with all this tech in and into the future. :)

  • Get MiniSynth 2 from Yonac, it's free now. Nice-sounding little synth. It's for iPhone but works very well on an iPad

First, AUM and AB3 are complimentary, different strengths that when combined will be even stronger. Second AUs don't work on the iPad 2 or 3 for that matter, but the other parts of AUM should work just fine.

Having had a 2, and still have a 3, confused how the 3 is weaker than than the 2? The 3 has four times the pixels to work with, and a more powerful CPU. I suppose you could argue the CPU improvement wasn't enough to keep up with all the extra pixels, but I didn't experience that

WOW, thanks.. That helps a lot! .. I know I'll end up getting Animoog as soon as I can. :)

  • I think I'm going to end up getting AUM and StudioMux. I know they aren't synths but I think it'll really help my workflow but I don't know. I guess I'll find out. Thanks everyone for all the help. I LOVE this community!

Rub it in! Some of us never took the opportunity to install it on our devices before Apple kil let it blossom into a GarageBand instrument. It’s already an amazing value as part of MainStage, but a new iOS version could do more than generate goodwill for the new owners of Camel Audio.

Actually... Is there an easy way to find those? Obviously, a search for “AU” returns many irrelevant results but “AUv3” or “AUX” or “Audio Unit” don’t list the right apps.

Idk, I use Google & YouTube for the most part.. and of course these forums have helped a bunch but even here the search doesn't work all that well. :/
