Basic Question: Audiobus 3 vs Audiobus 2?

Hello!

I'm trying to put together a basic group of iOS music apps and, obviously, Audiobus is among the most highly recommended. However, before I jump in and make a purchase,I have a (rather silly) question and I don't want to screw things up. Will Audiobus 3 do everything Audiobus 2 will - plus a lot more? Is there any reason I'd need to buy both or can I just go ahead with Audiobus 3 and have everything I'd need? I'm really hoping I don't need both, just to keep things streamlined and simple (and less expensive) but I felt it was important enough to ask nonetheless.

Thanks so much in advance!

  • You won’t need Audiobus 2

  • Some apps still have not been updated to AB3, but unless you really want to work with those, you don’t need AB2.

Thanks for sharing this. I was under the impression for some reason that AB3 would essentially be sort of "backwards compatible" with apps they may need AB2. I'm glad you mentioned this so that I understand that it isn't. :) Doesn't sound like it will matter too much but good to know nonetheless. It still sounds like the best place to start is AB3 and only worry about AB2 if I come across an app that i can't live without that won't work any other way. It will also likely keep me from buying an outdated apps that don't sorry AB3 - and that in itself isn't a bad thing.

Thanks again to both of you for sharing!

  • I wouldn’t bother with AB2. I have AB2 only because AB3 wasn’t released in 2012. AB3 does everything AB2 can and is the one currently being maintained. Cheers mate.

I've been using AB3 regularly for the last 6 months now. No issues to speak of.

  • Actually both of these apps are the same priced. Because for using Audiobus 2 you will need to unlock additional features as an IAP within. So you will pay $4.99 for Audiobus 2 (which will never be updated anymore), and $4.99 for IAP. Instead you could purchase Audiobus 3 ($9.99) and be happy with full functionality without any additional charges.

  • I use both. AB3 when I need midi, AB2 when I need reliable audio for live performance with low latency.

I went with AB 3 when I dove headfirst into iOS music in early 2017. I wondered the same thing at first about 2.
TBH though, I haven’t used audiobus since I bought AUM 6 months ago. It does everything I used to use AB for, but I find it to be a more elegant UI and maybe even slightly more powerful solution... No regrets on buying AB though ..I’m proud to have supported such a great dev and awesome chap ..and maybe I’ll end up finding a way to fit it into my work, perhaps using AB and AUM together as some people do. Plus I just bought all the midiflow apps when they were on sale , which I think have pretty tight integration with AB ..

  • Audiobus is still the way to go for a smooth IAA apps integration into complex workflow thanks to its unique state saving feature

  • Audiobus is needed with AUM in most cases for me. If you want to record something you loaded in AUM in another app like loopy or blocs wave, you will need AB for routing AUM output to iaa app. This is often forgotten, but AUM don’t allow for that for most iaa apps. And you will route iaa back to AUM to add effects and record if needed. I prefer to have microphone or generator apps in AUM to have more effects including AUM nodes, changer their order, do some complex routing that AB is not able too. AB adds state saving as said, but also switching bar which is so useful for fast workflow, global transport, and AB remote. To me both apps are just indissociable. I use AUM alone too when I want to jam quickly. The key with AB as like with many apps, is to do templates. You will not have to think routing each time. I have templates for AB/AUM/blocs wave as a recorder, or AB/AUM/loopy as a live machine for exemple. This gives a quick start for music creation.
