When compared to other iOS hosts, what are the weaknesses of iOS Garageband?
I've recently rediscovered iOS Garageband, and with the IAA/AU capabilities and 32 track sequencer, I'm really starting to like it again. I'm just curious if there is anything about it that I'm missing by not using other iOS hosts.

Editing of automation and lack of bus sends, master track are 2 biggies for me. But other than that - I love GB and find I use it more than Cubasis. Runs nicely on iPhone too.
You can't quantise a selection of your MIDI notes after recording, right? Have to move each one individually if they're off time?
Long press or tap the clip. The popup menu gives you options.
Audio editing/trimming for precise loops is unnecessarily fiddly. The saving scheme is problematic too.
I use it for parts. I'd like to do a complete GB project someday but because of said issues it can't be my main DAW of choice.
I use it on the phone too, and just recently switched from MultiTrack DAW back to Garageband after realizing that GarageBand is actually much more powerful. I could have sworn that there was at least volume automation in GarageBand. Is this wrong?
Audio unit fxs export issues, no true track freezing, no built in Link. But live loops mode is so closed to Ableton Live.
Could you please expound on what the issues are with Audio Unit FX exporting?
Yes u can do a simple vol automation. But that's about it.
When you export a song, audio units can be ignored aka dry tracks instead wet, or can be distorded or have bad timing/pitch behavior. Especially true with Audio damage AU suite, but seems to be the case with FAC AU too for some users. Ddmf and blamsoft are ok. Seems GB related as other hosts don’t have the issue. The problem is that Apple is VERY low to fix that kind of issues. I had like many others loading issues with AU and no track sound during perhaps 6 months. It has been fixed but now this new bug is there and I can’t use AU if no export possible This is frustrating as it’s a nice DAW with this so nice audio/midi live loops mode.
Some are bypassed during export. Likely because they haven’t been tested to do that. (I think there are some GB specific things developers need to do, but they are unaware because it’s under reported)
You’re right, need to use « report a problem » to see how they react. But I reported the other « no sound at reload » bug when I discovered it and they have taken as I said more than 6 months to fix it.
In comparison Korg is very reactive, I reported metronome count in issue, linear knobs lack of precision, iPhone audio glitches, iOS 11 screen edges lag, and even very specific refunded iap impossible to buy again. Not saying I’m alone to report those issues to devs, but they have fixed everything. Sometimes it has taken months too, but the app works as it should now.
Too bad Apple is that low, same thing with some iOS11 bugs which seems to take forever to be fixed. GB should be perfect IMO concerning AB, IAA and AU.
Oh in this case I meant reported to the specific AU developers, I doubt they test export of their plugins in GB
Hmmm.... Not good!
No MIDI out.
No multiple audio outs or stem export was the biggest limitation for me. Now the biggest one is that it's become completely unusable on my iphone. Freezes on start up. Multiple reinstalls haven't fixed it.
for what it does do and how much it cost, its really hard for me to complain about GarageBand IOS at all, especially now that we can record in 24 bit now, and for the most part I use it to start ideas then shoot them over to Logic Pro X. The one thing I do wish, is that we could record in the main timeline window where we can see all the tracks when we have a midi keyboard controller attached. I can understand it when just using the Ipad itself, especially with touch instruments, but itd be cool to see the overall arrangement when Im recording too and to see the waveforms while recording guitar or vocals.
You can merge tracks , so GB makes an audio track with the effects applied, and GB will save the session as a copy so you'll still have the original, which is REALLY helpful if you want to open a GB song in Logic Pro X with IOS audio units not available for Mac. I have had some issues with a couple AU when trying to merge them to audio tracks, namely IK Multimedia's Syntronik. I contacted them and they said they were working on it. That will great when that one works, I bought all the IAP's for it.
Yes totally agree. It’s one of the reasons I traded iPad 10.5inch for 12.9. With 12.9 you can see the 3 tracks in the timeline while recording.
Never had any issue with AUV3 apps or fx
GB has been a smooth experience for me thus far
But the volume automation is annoying though and it could do with a global mixer with send fx
Unfortunately, the issue is more or less still there when I merge tracks. Some AU give better results but most audio damage don’t. Forgotten to mention that too.
Uh, it is made by Apple.
nice, Im still on an Ipad Air2, hopefully Ill move up to the pro, that extra real estate sounds really sweet!
yeah, I have a lot of issues with Audio Damage IOS au's, many crashes, and not just in GarageBand, and I have a lot of their plugins, and have a fear of using them, lol.
They works perfectly in AUM but AUM is a special thing, so reliable. I know BM3 users have some issues with Audio damage too. Too bad as they’re so nice sounding effects.
Apart from a few missing features when it comes to editing the recorded touch midi/automation data and some other quirky work-arounds to convert track-types to audio or simply move midi from one track type to another(Touch Instrument Midi -> AUv3 Midi as an example), GarageBand is pretty solid.
AUv3 automation support for both Instruments & Effects (with editing) could be handy as would support for AUv3-midi plug-ins. CoreMidi out is also something that could be added.
I suspect these features will come if/when more advanced midi-editing & routing appears.
GarageBand does many things 'right' already and the more advanced could lift it up another notch.
I redownloaded Garageband Mac today to get a feel for where iOS version is headed..couldn’t find any automation there either yikes.

I've only got LogicPro X installed so that's my 'reference' to what Apple could do with the iOS version of GarageBand. I'd be happy to pay IAP to 'unlock' more advanced features in GarageBand to be honest...
https://support.apple.com/kb/PH24876?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US
(That's midi editing in GarageBand).
It’s possible that they will bring iOS version of GB and Mac version at feature parity then as one gets some of Logic’s features over time the other will also get it. If this is true then I doubt GB iOS would get a Pro IAP. It will just evolve slowly.
So back to hoping that Logic iOS is in the works
I hope that if logic ios ever happens its in conjunction with proper file management. I'm not a logic user (the app I mean! Although some may agree on the other meaning...)
Garageband is a GREAT app for songwriting demos, I don't use it much further than that so it does what I need.
I don't really use garageband on my Mac and I'm not sure why, but the time we've used it on our shutterwax writing sessions the one thing I wish was in the Mac version was the song sections, unless I missed that (I did look for it). That's helpful when building an arrangement in the writing process.
I do wish the drummer on ios had more control of the levels of each drum, but for my use its still good.
It looks like my biggest concern is the AU effects bug. That one really concerns me. I hope Apple fixes it soon. The other things are concerns too, but currently it is the best open DAW available for iPhones (I have and use and love Gadget as well, and with AUM, I use it as well as GarageBand).
So, has anyone tested to see if they can output GarageBand through AUM and record the output live with AUM's record to file option?
