It’s possible to set the ring to have less notes, ie a larger area to hit to trigger a given sound. So for example you could make the whole ring into a tambourine!

That's actually something I was hoping for 8 to 10 notes would probably be the most I'd cram on it for dynamic live playing.

I want to see if this and boppad/drambo can be friends. :)

The manual says it doesn't transmit but receives program change. I wonder what can be this used for: patch change, load sessions? Off to read the manual.

Edit. I was wrong. It won’t receive but the buttons on the ring can be set to send PC messages....I.e. to load Audiobus sessions FTW!

Yes, if only to a degree, using the Kit setting you could assign the whole ring to one part, but this may result in a pitch shift of the chosen scale of that part for the whole ring, or you could slice up the whole ring into 32 parts and assign the same instrument sample or synth to each individual part, this would result in a non shifted note for each part, unless you entered scale mode. But the outer and lower remaining segments may have pitch shifted versions but across their whole segments.

  • it looks like a fantastic tool for that price
(and I love Zoom- my 1st sampler was a Zoom ST-224:)
but there is something that puzzles me...
all youtube demos of it sound very raw and rudimentary.
old tired samples and synth patches...
no shuffle, no creative or something interesting.

    any good demos around !?
    thanks.

Yes I had super fun way back when with my ST-224. Believe me things get creative very quickly with ARQ-96 using beat repeat, global filter and FX, mute, solo, copy pattern, song and pattern chaining, audio capture and looping - it’s all there 🙂

  • I also own the Zoom R8 which is another superb piece of kit - it’s a multitrack recorder, sampler, drum machine and controller in one and is portable 🙂

And works as a control surface for Auria....

After 24hrs with mine it’s a no for me.

I did not learn it throughout of course but there’s some annoying bits that make it unusable for me.

    1. The ring disconnects occasionally resulting in a splash screen and interruption of triggered sound. Especially when tapping from sides. Might be solvable?
    2. The ring actually isn’t ideal as a playable surface as it isn’t really ergonomic. A least for me. Triggers are also fairly small and require a lot of focus to play, especially live.
      (Monkey on a typewriter)
    3. Considering how much there is going on there’s not enough immediate control over sound.
    4. The sound leaves me rather disappointed. Especially the synth engine.
    5. The lights while quite cool and attractive can be distracting.
    6. The LCD is well designed and works well for its size but is way too small for the amount of things this thing is trying to achieve.

I really wanted to like it but it just doesn’t give me that warm and fuzzy feeling as say Impaktor.

The positive bit: my kids love it!!

This is how I feel about the dog. Would like to send it back, but just can't.

More seriously, shame it didn't work out for you. Been following this thread and I thought it might've been right up your performance alley...

Ha, I did give it longer to master this beast and updating to v2 software is essential as this transformed it completely. I am about two weeks in and like it a lot 🙂 I play the ARQ alongside my Roland FA06 and feel happy to break free from iOS for a while 🙂

I think this might be the clue. I have my dream IOS + Circuit +controllers set up which makes me very fussy about immediacy and playability. I can see this becoming good with own samples and time getting used to the ring as a playing surface. I know my iOS rig inside out and Circuit is quick and quite capable which basically covers all of arq with the benefit of bunch of controllers right there.

This is defo part of the story for me. Not being willing to put in the time to learn a new way of working when I have it all here muscle memorised as is. Priorities I suppose.

I’ll keep it for a while longer but once Drambo drops all my attention will go there.

My girls have been asking for a pooch for a while. Might bite the bullet if only to do away with the abounding bird killer felines.

What lead are you using to power it off the powerbank?

I am using a standard USB to mini USB lead. Plug in to the mini USB socket on the device and it will power the ARQ.

    An even better solution

Let’s you power the Arq from a power bank without cluttering up the usb socket.

The latest AB beta works well accepting clock and start stop from the zoom over usb :)

I'm late (and newbee) to the party but also still enjoying the zoom arq 96. But was missing piano notes and a little better synth sounds. So I bought a Second hand mininova.

    1) I can connect them with the Jack's but is it also possible to connect them only via USB? So I don't need an extra device.

    2) is it possible to sync the tempo of the arppegiator.

    3) can I save my note input made by mininova in to de zoom arq? (So not the sound but the signal).
