Phaedra Sequencer - anyone using?

edited January 2014 in General App Discussion

Does anyone currently use Phaedra? Is it OK with iOS7 etc. does it work as described? Looks good for 4 channels on 1 page and appears straightforward. Does it have timing issues and other common faults? It seems to have been untouched for a while and there isn't much info out there.

  • Interesting. Giving it a try. A little antiquated but probably serviceable.

  • That could describe my ex wife...

@PaulB hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! classic! I've got a couple of ex wives probably say same about me....well, probably not if I think about it a bit more.

  • The dev doesn't respond to email (or didn't respond to mine) and seems to have abandoned the app. I haven't tested it on iOS 7, but I'm still using it for some things. Note entry could be easier, but the running display is pretty and it does have four tracks (an advantage over Thesys).

  • I got an Apple reboot switching back to it while experimenting with running Little MIDI machine as a slave to it. Once only, so far, Air.

  • Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like you guys have just bought this or have you had it a while? Reckon it's OK for the money so far? It was the 4 channels on 1 page that caught my interest.

  • Mine too. I'm optimistic.

  • Mine too. I'm optimistic.

  • I've had it for awhile. It also has a bounce mode (forward, then backward) that Thesys doesn't have. On the other hand, if you look at YouTube videos, you'll find one where the lights seems to have lost sync, if not the actual sound. User error? Quite possibly; or maybe a clock issue, which wouldn't be uncommon at all.

Bottom line: this does some things nicely, but don't expect it to improve (or stay working in all future version of iOS).

You've sparked my interest with that comment. Can you give me a brief overview of that? You're using an output of one midi to trigger the input of another by the sound of it. For what purpose? I'm intrigued.

  • Several reasons. First is I just test the MIDI capabilities of everything I get, and for a sequencer that means how sell does it do clock and transport control. Second, I have in the past made sparing use of pattern seuencers, basically just to set a bed for jamming, but the 4 tracks n Phaedra got my attention, and of course I wanted more. The two fit together.

So far I have tested Phaedra controlling LMM. Took some spelunking around its MIDI configurtion but I did get it to work, with LMM starting, stopping, and showing correct BPM. Phaedra may be promiscuous with its performance outputs, but it does implement good selectivity with its clock and transport controls. So I set LMM to only enable its VM In, clock and trans, not note, and Phaedra to connect clock and trns to LMM. Later will test connectivity with MdiBridge but I don't think Phaedra is likely to handle that, so it likely wil never be my clock master.

Ultimately I will graduate them all to slave to MidiBus and transport control from Auria via the buttons on my nanoKONTROL2.

  • Thanks, I get most of that and certainly appreciate the your time explaining it. MIDI is still somewhat of an arcane science to me still, but I WILL conquer it. Again cheers. Will get Phaedra and have a play later.

Looks like not too many people here are using Phaedra even though it's fairly old. Thats why I held back getting it.

@dokwok thanks to you too sir.

hey there, looking out for a copy of phaedra, & or other older midi sequencer iOs software,
is there anyone one willing to 1) extract phaedra, with iMazing or iTunes 12.6.5 (last one that can handle .ipa managing/extracting) 2) upload that .ipa

    thnx

  • I used to own Phaedra. It was one of the first step sequencing apps on iOS. But having just looked in my customer account it’s not even available for re-download. Must be a case of non operability on modern iOS operating systems. And my older iOS devices with earlier OS’s have long ago been recycled.

    Happy hunting.

  • ah so you never extracted it perhaps on an older computer with iphone 12.6.5 ? thanx anyway for looking & replying

yes i remember those early "midi sequencing with ipad" times, was amazed & watched a lot of youtube videos with a multitude
    of midi apps ...
