I'm going to say something controversial -Samplr is NOT a must have app
I think that it should be Audioshare, and Koala Sampler. Maybe when Samplr was $9.99 it was, but even with the updates on Samplr, I think Koala has Samplr beat when it comes to price with value.
Not saying Samplr isn't a great app, but Samplr isn't the must have app of 2020.
(As with all discussions, please feel free to prove me wrong...or right..or otherwise).
EDIT: Whoa, this blew up. And not for good reasons.
I’ll say it again. Samplr is an amazing app and I do have it. I even designed a shortcut to make sampling easier on both apps - https://routinehub.co/shortcut/5189. I just feel that it has some serious competition unlike before. Koala is my choice, but someone else mentioned Drambo, Spacecraft, AUM.
For me, $3.99 for a sampling powerhouse makes a lot of sense versus $29.99 for Samplr, when it comes to price with value for the reasons listed below.
Comments
Good to know.
I never got it.
But, I love Koala!
Oxygen is a must. Apps are for the love.
@JohnnyGoodyear
Great advice for the Present Day.
I don't disagree with you. For most, it's probably not a "must-have". For most, Koala is probably a better option.
However, when I look back at the sheer number of projects saved in Samplr, that I'm actually really proud of, it's a tool I hope I never have to do without.
You’re drunk, sir
Samplr looks cool, but it doesn't exactly fit my workflow. Koala doesn't fit the way I make music either.
Drambo I would argue is the must-have app of 2020. Drambo as a standalone doesn't fit my workflow, but the fact I can use it as an AU does fit my workflow quite well.
I'm more of a traditional "DAW programming" type of chap.
The inevitable backlash!
FWIW, I like it but don't find it a "must have" either. Everyone works differently! Watch the videos and if it looks like a must have for you, then it probably is. It's not like these things are a mystery with YouTube these days.
Agreed about Drambo being the must have app for 2020. I looked at it and I was like , “Welp! I guess I know where my rent money is going to”. (Still haven’t bought it but everyday I fight the temptation)
@iOSTRAKON Would you be able to share the reasons you like Samplr? I’m hoping to understand. Maybe I’m missing the benefit of the app.
Again, I think the app is fantastic (and I do have it). But, as a “broke college student”, I’d be inclined to say Koala has the better value.
If your rent is $20 per month, please let me know where that is! Ha!
I agree though, Samplr is cool but for me it doesn’t really click.
I’d agree. It’s a fun app, but personally not essential for my workflow. I like Koala, but my must-have sampler app is Spacecraft. That one really is essential for me.
Well, in Canada $20 becomes $30 (after taxes).
But, there’s a lot of meaning behind the word, “broke college student”. It means, I gotta focus on the things I already have, and the limited time I have to dive into an app, get better at them, before I commit to getting another app.
Plus, worst case is when I’m ready, I can always buy Drambo full price to support the developer. (time value of money)
Ha, I was kidding of course. I finished college in 1997 but I certainly remember those days. And yes, learning an app is good, we all jump around so much. I’m really focusing on getting more proficient in logic right now, learning key commands and such, as that seems like where most of my work is headed. I’m providing a lot of tech support for fellow musicians right now.
Please don’t take my comment as an insult. I’m not that type of guy
The value of Samplr or any app really depends on the type of artist you are and what style of genre you’re bending.
For me, Samplr fits my experimental nature perfectly. You truly have to take an abstract approach to this app. I believe it’s a must have in my arsenal due to the results I can achieve from it.
All good. And it’s awesome you’re helping other musicians. I haven’t dived deep into Logic. Hopefully when I get a Mac (or if Apple releases it on iPad OS), then I can spend some time digging through the software as well.
@iOSTRAKON Same as well. I may have phrased my response/question incorrectly. I actually made the thread to give the better $ value, while getting better ideas on how to use Samplr. So, if you have any tips on how it has helped enhance your workflow, please let me know.
@cian - Edited this post because I accidentally typed a blank post.
Edit: They do different things. But if I was to pick one, I’d say Koala first, Samplr second.
it’s neat but I have no idea what to do with it
I tend to agree here as i never fully 'clicked' with it and the automation recording is annoying as I always tap stop too late thus the sequenced automation never loops perfectly, would love have an option to set the length of automation recording in advance to avoid mishaps.
As for editing the recorded stuff, look at the MicroFreak where it's easy to step thru the recorded events and adjust as needed.
For some it's a goldmine for me it's in the meh category for now...
Why is Koala a must have app? Seems an odd choice if you're rejecting Samplr.
I love both Samplr koala and they offer different features, I think “ must haves “ are up to each user to decide, no so much a “right or wrong “ thing. After watching some video tutorials that made me appreciate Samplr more I change my approach as to how I use it. I love both but I don’t know if either are must haves
Samplr has enhanced my workflow because I believe it’s the most sophisticated sampler app on the market. Well, Borderlands is up there as well.
I can manipulate drums, vox, synths, drones etc with a finger on the fly. I’m not the type of artist that relies on too much sequencing when it comes to samples. I like to expose different sounds within the moment. Samplr helps me to achieve unlike the majority of apps in the same category.
...double post...
Koala, like Samplr, induces hours to pass by. Both apps are very intuitive and inspire all kinds of exploration.
I will say that Samplr is far more beautiful — one of the most perfect interfaces on my iPad.
However! When I'm done with my explorations, the music I have made with Samplr tends to be murky and a little baffling: it's like reading the notes you wrote while you were on mushrooms. _It seemed so significant at the time! _Whereas with Koala, it has a cohesion that is really hard to match with any other app.
I never pull out Samplr mostly because — in my experience — it doesn't join a track well. It's usually the spark. I just have to remember to stop fiddling with it once I have something interesting.
But I truly don't know why nobody talks about how great TriqTraq is. It's like Koala with p-locking and the world's greatest arpeggiator.
I think Samplr would be essential in 2020 if it was also AU compatible, but even without it, it's still a powerful tool in a production kit.
Koala isn't a must have for me until it gets an ipad landscape mode or an AU version.
No app is a must-have. Samplr is a unique special instrument -- but just like any instrument, it will appeal strongly to some people and be one of their instruments of choice and for others it won't.
For those for whom it is an inspirational piece of software, it is every bit as unique now as it was when it was released. For some people it was never an app of particular interest. There probably is no instrument about which their is unanimity of opinion.

Haha 😀. I mean the title did say it would be controversial. Looking forward to the meme 👍.
The next app I’m going to buy is the only “must have” one 😉
