Can Cubasis 3 do these things?
I’m thinking about picking this up whilst it’s on sale.
I’m very happy with the dawless setup and can generally do without a decent audio track solution now that segments exists.
However, sometimes I think it’d be good to bounce everything to audio and mix/master in a daw. Cubasis seems like the best solution to this.
Before I shell out...
- How is it compatible with Audiobus/AUM? Presumably it doesn’t do state saving? Can you record onto multiple tracks at once?
- What is the timestretching like? Presumably very good?
- How about audio editing?
- Can you transfer projects easily from iPad to iPhone and back again?
Comments
1) Plug-Ins remember their settings and the latest session is recalled when re-opening the app.
(You can use AUM as IAA Generator on track(s) and record them).
(When using AudioBus Cubasis auto-creates tracks for each AB track, just put Cubasis in AB output slot).
1.5) Multiple tracks can be recorded, just arm as many as you need...
2) It uses Z-Plane Elastique which is pretty good with three quality options.
3) Pretty basic to be honest (Normalize, Fade In/Out, Trim, Reverse. The audio editor 'forgets' event settings done on the time-line in case you want to 'Trim' the clips you need to be 're-cut' again in the audio editor, bohooo).
4) Yes using Airdrop from the MediaBay.
Others may fill in with more detailed info but that's my summary to your 4 questions
Thanks Samu
This is great. More than I expected for Audiobus integration, so that’s good! Do you know if it can get timeline position from Xequence 2 or is that too much to ask?
Sounds like a good companion to the modular (can’t really say dawless!) setup.
Any difference between CB2 and CB3 regarding import of AUM stems? It’s time to finish up a bunch of quarantine jams, and I’m considering jumping from CB2 to CB3.
If you need to slice and trim things, the timeline in CB3 has a much higher resolution. This was the big selling point and in that way it delivers. Oh, and reordering AU fx for me is a must too and only CB3 does that.
The UI and navigation though seem to have lost a few ease of use features in the big code rewrite though. All in all CB3 is worth it to me now and in the long term should likely pay off. Hopefully over time they get the nice ease of use stuff back as at this point, now that the release titanic bugs have been addressed, going from CB2 to CB3 is three steps forward and one back.
You can reorder AUfx in Zenbeats 😎
What are the “ease of use” things you mention re:CB3?
Yes, so does BM3, NS2 etc. I meant ‘only’ as in CB2 does not, but CB3 does.
Here is one... Moving Clips to the screen extents in CB2 seamlessly pans the timeline, up, down, left and right. Not the case at all in CB3. Autoscrolling up and down does not work at all. Right cuts out and left works sometimes.
(Similar issues with moving tracks exists).
I thought you might have meant 2 vs 3 after I posted. Your ease of use example is one of those things that drive me nuts about several iOS apps I’ve used. Like you said steps forward vs steps back!
For the most part I just use CB3 for collecting my iOS tracks and mastering using Fab Filters etc. Now that I don’t have a commute I am using desktop again for most things that I would have used CB3 for. If I go back to commuting I probably will host BM3 in Cubasis again and experiment with that some more as that does work well for me. But who knows.
A way that I am pretty excited about now is just recording a second iPad (BM3 and whatever Link apps) and desktop vsts straight into Endlesss and then doing super quick mixing of the Endlesss jam stems on desktop. It gives a certain quick instant long form flow that I don’t get from other processes. It sounds different (more loopy) than my NS2 stuff which tends be more organic and song-y. Was reeeealy hoping CB3 could be the place for Endlesss stem mixing but not with the clip selection and navigation the way it is.
If I had to just pick one iOS host/daw thing I would be screwed.
No, it won't follow timeline position from X2. That I know for sure.
I don't think it follows midi time clock sync either ... but I could be wrong on that point.
Oh recording linked audio into Endlesss and messing with it is so fantastic. The built in sounds can work too but it does sound fairly Endlesssy, like most users stuff. Also, If you are into collaborating it takes it to a whole other transcendent level.
as for CB3 I would get a lot more use out of it if you could just do speed control of an audio clip instead of having to stretch and pitch it with all the mushy artifacts that brings.
I’m gonna wait and see if we get Logic this fall.
Thanks, I figured it probably wouldn’t or it would have been mentioned before.
Somethings keeping me from pulling the trigger. The mixer view does look great, especially for iPhone, which is something you don’t get in AUM - it’s awkward scrolling in there, though hardly the end of the world.
Obviously audio tracks is a good thing which you don’t really get on AUM. I realise you can import audio into most of the daws on iOS but Cubasis does seem to be best in class for this. And it’s universal.
I’m sure I’ll probably buy it later on. Just trying to justify the price considering I won’t use most of its features 😂
Lol Greg stop being such a forum queen and walk 2 minutes to my house where you will find my iPad resplendent with both C3 and AUM!
You're welcome to fiddle to your heart's content. You can even take advantage of free beer or coffee. Or a cheeky smoke in the garden 🤫
You don’t even have Audiobus dude 😂
So I bought it as expected!
To avoid ’frustrations’ focus on what it can do and not too much on what it can’t do (yet?).
This approach has helped me keep my sanity
(Same applies to most iOS apps).
Quirks may need some workarounds that are not always ’logical’ but most things can be done one way or anoter.
It takes a while to get the ‘Cubasis Logic’ and some strange things are there ‘By Design’ or something. Some other apps have clearly better (at least for me) design choices when it comes to the tools for editing stuff lime audio and midi notes...
Cheers!
Thanks @Samu
First try I had an Audiobus session with several tracks. Hooked them all up with cubasis which made the tracks as expected, but I can only hear a couple of them. Tried just one eg pulse track which plays the first beat then is silent after that.
Is this one of the bugs?
I'd suggest using EG Pulse as an AUv3 in Cubasis. If you need to record the audio from it to a track...
...create an empty midi-region in Cubasis and use 'freeze' and move the resulting audio to a new audio-track.
This would work but kinda ruins the whole point of doing this. There’s other tracks that aren’t eg pulse that aren’t coming through well. Come to think of it they’re segments so maybe it’s an @ElliottGarage thing?
Strange that some Audiobus tracks are heard and some aren’t. I assumed as far as cubasis is concerned they’re all just equal audio tracks.
I’ll try going via AUM and see if I have more luck. Even if I have to record into AudioShare and import to cubasis I guess that’ll do for now.
Did you enable the 'speaker'(Monitoring) in Cubasis on all the AudioBus tracks?
But yeah, some apps may have problems with midi-sync and other issues but since I don't have fully working solutions for them I'll just conclude that you will bump into various issues and there's a bunch of users here who might be able to help
I’ve worked out what the problem is (but not how to fix it!)
Basically eg pulse is set to host sync in AB. As soon as Cubasis is set as the output pulse stops following host sync after 1 beat. If I turn off host sync and just press play on eg pulse I can hear it.
Very bizarre! Maybe it thinks cubasis is the host or something.
Seems to happen with the drums part of pure acid too, but not with the bass sequencer.
Edit: this does work if it goes through AUM so that’s the answer for now
So I emailed EG support and it turns out it’s something to do with how audiobus passes timings to apps when cubasis 3 is in the output slot.
I’ve emailed @Michael so will let you know when I know more
I’m scratching my head over why you don’t just load pulse right in Cubasis. Why use a DAW if you’re not going to use it as a DAW? Sync should be no problem then too. Oh well, I’m sure you have your reasons.
It’s simply because I love the modular ‘dawless’ setup. All my music ideas start in audiobus now which I find so fast and direct freeing. I then plug in Xequence if it’s matures past atom, AUM if I need sends or multi out, or if I like the idea enough to start mixing down etc. I find no limitations to this setup (apart from audio tracks) and it’s mostly rock solid and bug-free.
I picked up cubasis as I want something better for audio tracks for final mixing/mastering audio, or for remixes and stuff which have a full vocal audio track. The last thing I want to do is go back to arranging in a daw which won’t have a piano roll like Xequence and is riddled with bugs and limitations. I spent too long daw hopping and waiting for features to be added or bugs to be fixed.
I probably still sound mad 😉
So I guess Cubasis becomes the replacement for AUM in this workflow? Maybe the easiest path is to stick with AUM and just grab the stems there to dump into Cubasis when an idea gets to the point that it needs it. You have an existing workflow that works so maybe this Cubasis should remain outside that workflow till the end.
Just a thought.
Yeah that’s what I’m doing for now. Just thought I might as well report the bug as once sorted I can go straight from audiobus to cubasis easily for some ideas.
Hey
I’m trying to figure out how to record an Auv3 plugin such as Drambo to an audio track in Cubasis 3 LE ( full feature pack bought ). No success so far. When i try to set the internal source AUv3 is not an option. Am I in the wrong menu?
.
First I'd suggest loading Drambo as an AUv3.
If you sequenced stuff in Drambo and wish to record Ito to Cubasis create an empty midi region in Cubasis and use 'Freeze'.
If you're using an instrument in Drambo then record the midi using Cubasis and 'Freeze' the track to audio.
I don't know what Steinberg is cooking up for the next (3.3) update of Cubasis but if the nail the audio&midi routing this will become less of a hassle.
Cheers!
Thanks @Samu. Yes this work flow seems a bit fiddly since Drambo in this case sequences multiple instruments.
Ihi, excellently named thread!
-Can cubasis pitch shift samples on a piano roll? Without changing length? How?
Re-mixes must be made
