Ah, it was set to receive on Ch.1 and X0X was sending on Ch.10.
All is right with the world again! 👍
It’s pretty great, but no updates in a long time. I will say it actually does work on the M1 Mac. Though, it’s only helpful as an independent drum machine. IAA of course doesn’t work. Ableton Link does, but it seems only within other iOS apps on the Mac.
One concern is we all know Inter App Audio has been deprecated as of iOS 13 release. When Apple announced 32 bit support was going away we had about 2 years before it did. I’m wondering if come iOS 15 IAA might not work anymore. Clearly that is needed for these great kinds of apps like SeekBeats.
I doubt it will be anywhere as near as iOS 15. With the 32 bit purge it was a major OS streamlining thing with far greater implications for maintenance of the OS going forward. IAA is one tiny technology that works fine and most likely doesn't need a huge amount of maintenance. There were tools to help make the jump to 64 bit. There's no such thing with IAA. Transitioning an IAA app to AUv3 is a major endeavor. There are many times more IAA apps than AUv3 at this point. I can't imagine Apple yanking the rug out from under that many developers and potentially forcing so many off of the platform.
We'll probably still see IAA working for several more years IMO.
Seekbeats rules. Only drum synth I’ve ever been able to get a good sounding snare out of
Throoofnes.
It also does some neat synth bass sounds, so can be used as a mini Groovebox.
Would anyone still recommend Seekbeats today?
Or is the ground covered with Drambo and FAC Drumkit?
Somehow I’m still attracted to the snappy and deep sound of SB, but probably would be achievable in the others too i guess. And the randomizer seems pretty good too.
Probably just my GAS kicking in😂😅
Definitely would as it is still the amazing beast it was.
If my reply-bump helps getting through to the developer that would merely be a bonus.
Best
One of the best drum synths imo. The sound is unmatched, deep, punchy, incredibly flexible, and endlessly tweakable.
The interface on the other hand isn't my favorite. IAA apps are a bit of a pain to sync, and lack of state saving is irritating when revisiting sessions.
If you're using it alongside hardware I'd get and use it no doubt. But if you're planning on using it in the IOS ecosystem, I couldn't really recommend IAA any longer. Who knows how much longer they'll be compatible.
It’s still unique so definitely recommended for the sounds.
IAA apps are a major pain to use though and i don’t know if anyone has tested it on the latest beta etc. Worth the risk, I reckon. It sounds killer.
@saxophonick yea that would be great😊
@aleyas Yess it sounds so great from what I’ve heard on YouTube. Unfortunately iaa and no updates insight… I would only use it on iOS. Rendering the sounds to wave files would probably be the best practice.
I would still recommend it
Plus the EFX iAP (i love it)
But if you don't want to dish out cash for it... try tweakybeat, by the same dev
And free...
At least you can give it a try
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tweakybeat/id330051410
@senhorlampada thx great tip 😊 I was about to forget about it because it’s probably stop to work in the future but I Just downloaded tweakybeat and wow even that little app sounds nice. Now i wish even more that seekbeats would gets an update ^^ Would be so sad to see it dying.
I'm glad to help...
Hope the dev delivers an update
Even if it's a new app
Not really sure why someone wouldn’t use SB in say AUM just because it’s lack of being an AU? IAA’s don’t bother me in the least when they still function. Just my personal opinion anyways. Love Seekbeats.
Using IAA if you already have it is fine, if you can do without the state saving. But buying an old, unsupported IAA app just before a major OS update is definitely a gamble.
I opened up some of my old favourite IAA apps recently to remember what I was missing out on and it was just painful. Waiting for that loading cog to stop spinning in AUM, the crashes, the reloads, the single instances, remembering to save the patch with the same name as the session so you can pick it up again later. I had forgotten how tiresome the workflow was. Such a shame as they sound so good!
Love SeekBeats too, though! 🙂
Ah, SeekBeats is still the best sounding drum synth on iOS, hands down.
I am fully into Drambo and I even tried to replicate some of my favorite sounds from SB in Drambo, but no luck. Everything is theoretically the same - oscillators, filters, envelopes (you have the same graphical envelope in Drambo as in SB), I was even counting the division to have the same timing, tried out various distortions, saturators, compressions,... But even the kick sound itself is simply punchier and subjectively louder in SB.
I wish it was AU, resampling it is one way to go but it kills the creativity and sound design options you have when working directly with the synth sound.
This are exactly my thoughts thx
Ah good to know I’m not alone, i tried my best creating a SB kick in Drambo but every time something is missing. But on the other side I’m new to sounddesign so I thought i might did things wrong in Drambo(orFAC Drumkit) with the same tools available as in Seekbeats.
Anyone sequencing it externally? Getting weird clicks when using Xequence and multi out in AB or AUM. Sounds like the envelopes are messed up in some way but sounds ok stand-alone.
+1 : one of the first things I did when getting Drambo and understanding how the basics work was to emulate SB. Did not succeed, cannot get it close, it really is it’s own thing. Think I already mentioned it but a peculiar aspect of SB is its micro-variations both in timing and sound (if done on purpose : genius, if not : still genius) : if you export an identical loop over multiple bars the resulting audio is not identical per bar, which I think contributes to a livelier feel.
As the export count is limited for loops, I record multitrack in AUM over a couple of minutes and modulate sounds live one track at the time if need be, also switching patterns. Then I import in Live and cut it into arrangement parts.
Somehow limiting, and not always practical (sync, editing) but as it still works, if you want that sound you have to work a bit harder to keep using it and integrating in your music.
Tried to sequence it externally only long time ago, but a wild try: there are multiple options in settings + in each envelope for "sharp attacks", maybe turning it off would help?
Also I'd try out different note lengths and velocities and hear what matches the internal sequencer.
Have messed with sharp attacks but will give lengths/velocities a try tonight. Thanks!
Watch out for the latency of SeekBeats and AUM if it’s too low (besides I always put them at similar latency settings) as well as the sample rate in AUM which can switch between either 44.1 or 48, when the iOS system sample rate can be the other one, potentially causing weird sonic stuff.
Also, depends if you use other plugins/instruments in AUM : can easily overload the cpu.
The « Sharp attacks » setting alters the sound, but it shouldn’t sound different outside of SeekBeats.
Yea I’ve noticed that behavior in tweakybeat too.
Not to say that im not pleased with sound of Drambo, FAC Drumkit and the Ruismakers i like them all a lot. But there’s something special about SB, like you said probably those micro-variations. I recently watch a video by Jacob Haq there he showed the maling of a track he made. I was like that Drums sounding really great and it turned out it they were from SB.
Is there a stem export option or would i gave to sample each sound into AUM?
You can export synced loops as wav.
@gusgranite Ok thx
Been some time since I sequenced it externally
But one of my favorite pairing was Soft Drummer + Seekbeats
Really nice hearing something jazzy on SB
I don’t know? I just got an M1 1tb, I have yet to have any issues from inside of AUM hosting SB. Any other app that only is iaa for that matter. As long as SB functions, I’ll use it. My heart still loves a lot of those old apps. When they no longer work that’s when I’ll stop using them.
Yea hoping those apps don’t stop working too soon.
Is the iap fx board extension worth it too?
Yesterday I finally pulled the trigger and bought Seekbeats. And I already falling in love with the sound engine and the randomizer. The punchy and warm sound was exactly what I was looking for! Thanks to everyone
