So I finally got some AirPod Pros....

I admit, I've never been a big fan of Apple earbuds. The wired ones just felt and sounded cheap to me, and the original Airpods wouldn't stay in my ears for two seconds with that shape. Plus I have some nice Shure SE846's already, and very little sounds better than them to me. But, I got my wife some Pros last year and she swears by them, so I decided to give them a go out of curiousity a few weeks back while traveling.

I have to admit, I'm actually a lot more impressed by them than I expected to be. Right off the bat the noise cancellation was really good, and the transparency mode is super useful. One of the downsides of the SE846's is that if anyone talks to me I need to take them out, and then wait a minute or so for the foam eartips to expand when I reinsert them in order to get any bass. Not convenient. The Airpod Pros are much better in this regard, and I like how quickly you can put them in and take them out without waiting long for the tips to seal. And they fit me well and stay in with no problems.

Sound quality is good too, much much better than the wired earbuds from before. The lowest octaves are definitely a bit light compared to my 846's, but not as bad as I expected. Imaging is good as well, though not amazing being bluetooth with it's inherent compression losses. The Spatial Audio function in the APPs though was surprisingly good. Scary even. Apple's audio engineers are doing crazy things with smaller speakers these days, the sound out of my 16" MBP is much better than you'd think as well.

Latency wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting either. It's definitely there, but I could still play synth apps and work in things like GarageBand and Groovebox without much notice. Definitely good enough to getting ideas down, that's for sure.

All in all I was pleasantly surprised at these. Good sound, easy to use, great battery life, and more than anything super convenient. I'll still be reaching for the SE846's when I want to do any critical or more focused listening sessions, but for day to day use the Airpod Pros are actually really nice.

  • I had the AirPod Pro’s..... could not find a fit for my ears even trying all the earbuds. I bought some hooks for them and that helped a lot, but charging was a pain in the rear. So I gave up and gave them to my oldest daughter and I bought the power beats pro’s. I like them a lot but what a pain it is to wear them with my glasses and a mask!!😂. At least they stay in well and I like the sound.......

  • I've got the normal AirPods and I'm a big fan. They fit my ears. The sound it good enough for what they are meant for and they are super convenient. Battery life is also amazing.

  • Huge fan of the Pros, too. I have other nice headphones but the AirPods get a lot of use because they’re so convenient. I hope the Studios up the audio quality and ANC.

  • I don't think I've ever had a device run out of battery power now that I think about it. Oh wait, the Watch definitely gets pretty close if I use it for GPS duties while hiking.

I’ve owned 3 pairs now (I’m on the phone all day and use them non stop). If you use them a lot, the pros are worth the upgrade. I waited for a long time - Amazon has them for $199 now. Just sayin....
