Owned this app for years and never dug in. The devs updates are always massive so its clearly something worth checking. Trackers always confused me but I will try anyways.

Ignore the tracker. Sunvox has "real-time" MIDI input so there's not even a need to import MIDI files. You can just skip the whole tracker thing entirely and just use any external MIDI sequencer to work with Sunvox' brilliant sound engine, and skip the completely-unsuitable-for-a-touchscreen (DISCLAIMER 1: not Sunvox' fault 🙂 DISCLAIMER 2: in my opinion) tracker interface.

    Thank you for the information!

    I hate trackers.

SunVox is a great technical achievement, but I still haven’t heard sounds programmed with it that rival the best-sounding synths. I haven’t been able to tell if it is because of limitations of the oscillators and filters or just that all the tracks I’ve heard were created by people with a different aesthetic.

I can’t speak for others, but to me SunVox sounds like the epitome of late 90’s / early 2000’s IDM. From the default drum kit and the grainy reverb, to the aliasing waveforms and the rough digital SpectraVoice. I personally dig that aesthetic, so the SunVox ‘sound’ has always clicked to me. It has character, and I can’t say that’s truly something a lot apps have going for them.

Hey wim! :) What are these for? I've got to that point in my app buying career where I go to buy something and I already have it.

The SunVox synths have their own character that I admire as well.

I really like this Sunvox track. It may not "prove" the greatness of Sunvox synth tones - I don't believe in that kind of competition anyway - but it sounds unique compared to most other Sunvox tracks that I've heard.

I asked Mr. Bergwerf if he used any samples for that viola/cello sound and he said no - it's just oscillator shaped through EQ-X sunsynth. He also stated he achieved the counterpoint by arranging patterns of 4 measures against 3-measure ones using SunVox's timeline.

What a great example to show my friends who argues that SunVox is just for sounding like an old Amiga demo competition entry.

  • Awesome indeed....
Another option to show people that sunvox isn't always chiptune/old amig demo is checking out some of the ambient tracks. There are some good tracks out there

  • Cool, I think Mr. Bergwerf deserves more listeners. I'm listening to his string quartet track right now. Holy smokes! This guy got some talent.

Is this all synthesized!? I would have never guessed. Incredible sound designing.

    Never underestimate Sun Vox :)

I really need to dig deeper into sunvox. I'm pretty comfortable using the tracker to sequence instruments and do some general parameter automation. But there is so much more to this daw. Need some master class tutorials!

  • @tja cheers man. I'm gonna start relearning this beast.

  • Yeah, even today Solar Lune's tutorials are still among the best for SunVox.

I'd recommend learning on the free desktop version because he uses keyboard shortcuts. Or at least don't be like me and learn on the iPhone, subjecting oneself to unnecessary inconveniences.

  • Is there a way to peek inside of SunSynth metamodules?

You’re asking all the right questions.

‘Edit’ at the bottom of the module parameters section. It’s in a little red rectangle.

    Metamodules are my favourite.

And before you ask - metamodules inside metamodules is a big yes.

    Matryoshka.

I actually bought an iPad magic keyboard basically 90% for the SunVox shortcuts. I do have it installed on my mac also - and I admit, it is much easier to use there. Just gotta reassign those function key shortcuts 😅. Anybody got a recommended template?

Thx. I thought that I was tapping Edit but my fat fingers were hitting options instead :)

Let me know if you find one. I love my magic keyboard!!!! Love the backlit keys and the extra charge port.

Ah I’m still rocking the gen1 iPad Pro, so I don’t have the newer magic keyboard. Think I’ll update iPad when that multi-threading thing starts getting implemented more widely, to really take advantage of the faster processors.

  • Bloody hell, that's a serious piece of sound design. Need to dig into his designs.

  • when I try to connect to the SunVox site I get "Secure Connection Failed" - "Error code: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG". Anyone else getting this?

I have an update. After the new SunVox update it is loading as AUv3 where before it wasn’t even listed. I have not been able to get a module connected to another module yet as in iOS you need to tap on part of the screen and then the other. So, this is not working here. If you have a project you can load it though.

To connect modules you have to hold down the first box while tapping the one you want to connect. It sounds as though you might be tapping the first one, not holding it down.

The other way to do it is to select a box, then hit the connect icon at the top right of the modules area (the area will turn green), then tap the module you want to connect.

    Both ways work fine here.

If you read the original quotes I’m talking about M1 Mac as a plugin, as that was the question I originally answered. Were you able to get it working there? It probably doesn’t’ work better with a trackpad, but I’m just using a mouse.

Sry, thought you were talking about iOS.

Doesn’t work with the send method I mentioned either I guess?

  • New mini-tutorial from Alexander Zolotov. Something about "dynamic scale" with MultiSynth. Some kind of lock-to-scale thing.

Alexander Zolotov works so hard on this thing, it's so incredibly feature rich. Honestly if I had to start over with absolutely nothing, I would easily be happy with just sunvox and something to edit and feed it samples. The only reason I don't use it for everything is lack of familiarity, as I'm a tracker novice. But damn am I constantly impressed with the thing.

    That looks very complicated lol
Love the app but i don’t think I’ll ever learn that
