AltiSpace: How has it aged?
I bought this app years ago and love it. I noticed it's no longer available in the appstore which is a shame. I tried it out in Auria, last night, and I think it sounds great. It has tons of tweak-ability.
How does it compare to the latest hot apps out there? It destroys Auria's built-in convolution reverb plugin.
Comments
It has aged well though it will be gone once they deprecate IAA.
A viable alternative is Thafknar.
I downloaded Thafknar. It's not stable for me. In AUM, it devolves to a buzz on a regular basis. I have to eject it and load it again to fix it.
It's cool for me on both my machines.
No problems at all in usage.
The other ones to try are the Convolutor from Jens Guell
and IFX from Midiculous LLC.
Convolutor is waiting for an update and I don't have IFX.
@espiegel123 is the best person to ask.
He did quite extensive tests and shared his results on convolutor apps.
Is it possible to transfer the reverbs out of AltiSpace into another app? If they are just IRs or whatever, shouldn't that be possible?
Nope not directly. I asked the dev and I haven't received a response as yet.
Espiegel suggested creating your own from Altispace using Thafknar which I've yet to do.
I just looked in the Files app, hoping to find an AltiSpace folder with IRs in it. I didn't, BUT I did find the .irf files that I'm using for my Auria project in the Auria directory. Are these .irf files a standard that can be used in other applications? If so, there's a way to export them from AltiSpace.
UPDATE: disregard. Those are from the Auria built-in plugin. Some of them are named the same as the AltiSpace presets so I confused myself.
I don't know.
Try it and see if they work.
It's a pity that Thafknar doesn't work for
you as you could try this link
https://floaudio.bandcamp.com/
He has uploaded ir's from the Lexicon PCM 91 and the Eventide Shimmer.
They are more than worth the asking price.
I don't know how you are using Thafknar. I was using it "live" while practicing guitar in only one channel of AUM. THU Overloud was the only other app in the chain. This is on a brand new iPad Air 2020. I haven't loaded any IRs into it, was just playing with the "church" preset. I'll give it another go, but we are talking about it happening twice in the span of 20 minutes.
I also auditioned GE Labs and the same thing happened, but there a lot of other reports of that experience.
Currently using it on a bus in AUM.
Nothing really out of the ordinary.
Now trying it on a live input and it seems to be working as expected.
iPad Air 3, iOS 14.2
Okay, then it may not be a problem with the app itself as
quite a few apps have been having problems with iOS 14.2.
As you're using guitar, are you using an iRig or
similar or are you using an external audio interface?
also what sample rate are you using?
I use only 44.1kHz when using my Air 3.
The newer iPads have an fixed internal setting of 48kHz.
With an external audio interface you can switch between sample rates.
I actually find Thafknar quite stable and the most efficient of the IR apps -- the developer is also very responsive if you contact him.
With convolution reverbs, the buffer size is important.
What buffer size are you running? What size IRs?
Are you running mono (single channel IR), mono-to-stereo (stereo IR file), stereo-to-stereo (two stereos IRs)?
I've got all the AltiSpace IRs but I can't share them publicly...
I knew the one person who would have them for sure would be you.
You're so funny.
You know I'm going to ask.
😂
@rs2000
So....
May I have them please?? 😇
I won't be offended if you say no.
Edit...
Better still trade???
In depth three day course for Quantiloop Pro??
We need more details of your setup. All convolution apps are somewhat CPU hungry but tons depends on the actual IRs and settings. I have not found any convolution app more efficient than THAFKNAR - though I wouldn't say it is tons more efficient -- and this includes compared to AltiSpace which I used to use.
I'm setup through a MOTO M2, iPad Air (less than a week old), very latest IOS updates installed.
In AUM, I have buffer set to 256. Sample rate 48k. One mono channel strip.
I inserted Thafknar after Overloud and set nothing up specifically, so it's all defaults. In Thafknar (loaded as an AU), I chose the middle option on the top toggle ("IOS AU") and have only played around with the sliders and presets on the parameters menu. I've not even loaded any IRs into it (don't even know how, haven't tried).
Your buffer size is too small for a convolution app to run well -- unless you are using tiny IRs (like a small mono cabinet IR)
I am not sure that "the middle option means". Normally with an IR (unless you know what you are doing), the only slider that is relevant is the wet/dry one.
What IR do you have selected when you are using it?
Perhaps you could post pictures showing all the relevant settings -- including which IR is selected.
Middle toggle at the top of the screen. This error is new. Maybe it’s a clue.
@Sabicas You're not on an iPad Pro, are you?
No, I have the newest iPad Air
I'm using Thafknar regularly and I've never seen this error message. Sorry.
Maybe it's the higher screen resolution?
disregard this comment.
Btw, you aren't running the AU. That picture is for the standalone app. If you haven't yet set it up as an AU that might explaing your problems.
I bought the IAP for AU. What else is there to do? Why would it allow me to open it from the AUM AU menu?
Yeah, so choosing Thafknar as an AU in an AUM insert does indeed open the standalone app. It's safe to say that's a bug. I'm not really sure what else I can do besides write the developer, which I have done.
Offloaded, rebooted, reinstalled. Working

Now, any good free IR dumps out there or is this pretty much a pay-to-play situation?
Very strange. I've not seen that happen. Maybe delete and reinstall? Perhaps the initial install didn't work right?
Have you checked the manual? I can't recall if you need to download some IRS first (which can be done from within the standalone)
Loads of free IRs on the net, really. Search for "impulse responses free download" or something like that.
Thanks for the tips. I found plenty. Do you recommend 16, 24, or 32 bit IRs?
If the same IR comes in multiple bit depths use the highest bit-depth available.
But you can't tell the quality just from the bit-depth. For IRs made by recording, there is a wide range of qualities because it all comes down to how well something was recorded. A 32-bit IR can be crappy and a 16-bit IR can be great.

Curious what some of the reverb experts here think of the reverbs in Mixbox Cs btw
