Chances of Norns being ported to iOS?
I’ve been watching a lot of Norns videos on YouTube, and it’s really intriguing. I’m a bit afraid that even the shield is out of my budget and expertise just for experimenting with! Could ( is it possible?) it be ported to iOS? And is it worth anyone’s time? Is it too niche!? More importantly can it do anything you cant do on a iPad?

I assume you're aware of the Norns kit? It is very intriguing, isn't it?
Yeah I'm really really tempted, but....
What is Norns?
https://llllllll.co/
It's a raspberry pi powered open source music maker.
I‘ve a pi-clone and never found anything worth exploiting more deeply in the music domain.
What you got in IOS is at least 2 classes above in audio quality and convenience.
XCode is free for private use and there are free (high quality) libraries in IOS, covering Midi and digital audio. XCode seems a steep learning curve initially, but it‘s peanuts compared to the Visual Studio counterpart... and it‘s overall structure is quite common sense, something completely missing in the Microsoft environment imh experience. (I have a 4-figure license for that bs)
You may consider doing external control on Rasberry or Arduino for IOS sound devices, though.
I figured it was more a case of my GAS flaming up than anything else. I'd be limited to other people's scripts anyway, thanks very much for your reply!
I've just ordered one readbuilt after seeing all the great Compass script videos on YouTube. I'd love something similar on iOS.
let me know how it is please!
Will do... I'm not expecting it for a while though as it has to travel from the States to the UK. Regarding the Compass asynchronous looper script; Gauss, iDensity and a few other apps will wobble and glitch your loops on iOS, but I've not yet managed to get anything to sound as good as the Compass script, which seems to do the job so elegantly.
Easy Dan,
I'm ashamed to admit that I have a Norns Shield/Pi that I've not even begun to explore yet! I've been active on Lines for years and couldn't fight the Monome-lust any longer, but haven't had time to explore it yet thanks to other commitments. The closest I can think of on iOS is using something like PureData (via PdParty or MobMuPlat). It obviously isn't Norns but it does open up some very interesting possibilities...
Pete! I had a feeling you might have one! Thanks for the heads up, I’m going to do some research on that puredata stuff now thanks. I know exactly what you mean with the monome lust. Currently I need one of those, a gecho loop synth, a microcosm pedal and a volca modular. This lust expands every now and again to encompass something else
Thanks again and yeah elegant is definitely the word.
There were some truly amazing Volca Modular videos on Instagram that 100% converted me to the "NEED" club too, mate. It can do things I never imagined possible - horn sounds, especially. One of the things I bought when I sold off most of my vinyl last year was a Make Noise easel (0-coast and 0-Ctrl) so I'm telling myself I absolutely DO NOT need a Volca Modular... but I'm not always convinced!
Yeah I mean for the price it’s amazing. Analogue west coast synthesis for 140 bones. I’ve seen so much lush stuff come out of one, it’s untrue. Plus it’s portable! Man I’m not doing us any favours! How’s the make noise kit going!? Getting some good squonking sounds!?
I managed to stave off buying a volca by getting Ripplemaker instead. Still can only make a harsh squonk and a sort of sickly squeal haha!
Ripplemaker is insanely good and it absolutely does scratch that itch! On desktop I'm a massive fan of everything Madrona Labs does (and would dearly love for Randy to port Aalto etc to iOS) which also gives me that left coast leftfield synthesis. The Make Noise combination is so ridiculously deep that I need to spend a month or two doing nothing but exploring it, I think!
Lately I've had to completely reconsider my views on the Volca series, having been a bit dismissive initially. The Pajen firmware for the Sample is absolutely astoundingly good, as is his work on the FM. Both of those boxes are more or less must-have units considering they're £50-80 secondhand. Obviously we don't need to comment on how great the Modular is & I saw some videos of the Drum the other day that shows just how amazing it can be at modeling percussion from anything to a gong to a Buchla-style bongo!
Just swooped a prebuilt Norns Shield kit. Will be here on Wednesday. Really looking forward to getting to grips with it.
Loving mine; iOS is taking a bit of a backseat at the moment. So many great scripts to explore; great granular processing, tape manipulation, and loop mangling apps. MxSamples is proving to be wonderful too; I've managed to convert a few of my smaller Kontakt libraries for it using Total Commander with the inNKX plugin. Doesn't always work with the copy protection, and since I'm flying by the seat of my pants with this stuff, I'm not always quite sure what I'm doing anyway. 😉
There are quite a few Pianobook sets already converted by the script author. PedalBoard is also wonderful, and has Clouds and Rings available in the effects list ...and that Compass script, which is what I bought Norns for... wow!
Yeah Compass looks absolutely nuts. I'll post here if I dig out any decent scripts.
It took me a few days to find my way around the three main ways of navigating and managing stuff in Norns. There's Maiden, the browser library management system, for installing or deleting most but not all of the scripts; you can also edit scripts in Maiden. Then to transfer files, audio etc you have to SMB or samba into Norns. Finally to troubleshoot stuff and get a bit deeper you have to open a terminal in a SSH client and ssh into Norns. This was all new to me but easy to manage if you can read and follow instructions.
The Lines community are really nice and helpful too. Fiddled with a few scripts altering parameters here and there... never too old to learn stuff and I've got the time since I've just retired...
Good to know, thanks. I really like Lines too.
I’ve got to get busy and solder my Fates. Then I can pester you about using yours
Cool video...
The only thing that I find frustrating with how Novation have gone about the firmware with the Launchpad range is that the Pro is different to the rest of the range. So that usually means that once something is written for the Pro, it isn't for the rest and vice versa. There are some very nice scripts out there for the LP + Norns that are for one or the other and I'm finding, so far, that it's not for my version.
That's good to know... thanks!
It's not always the case but it does happen. Please do your own research. Or, at least, don't take my word for it.
How are you new owners getting on with Norns? I'm really enjoying the new Glacier script, which does a fair approximation of Paulstretch. 4 channels of slowed down stereo goodness, with the promise of filters and more in a later update.
Just reviving this thread since I just ordered a Norns Shield myself (thx 2 loopop). There are some amazing applications running on this thing and I think the way scripts interact with grids brings something different than most iOS apps, namely an integrated hardware front-end.
I've tried Monome emulation before but the complex setup and dependency on the computer can be a bummer. The streamlined nature of norns is very attractive: load the scripts into the machine, connect the appropriate controller (if it needs one), and just run it. The only downsides I see is in order to use Norns with 3rd party grid controllers takes modifying each script (adding a line of code), which kinda takes away from the plug-in-play aspect. That will push me to want a real Monome Grids eventually, so my $300 toy will quickly become a $1000+ toy.
