MTS update adds MPE/MIDI 2 support

Extra detail from the desktop release notes: https://www.multitrackstudio.com/version10.php

Looking forward to trying this later, assuming Atom 2 has not dropped of course!

  • That’s cool to see a DAW add MPE support actually.

  • @Gavinski check out this thread ref MPE. I don’t own the DAW but it’s one to think about.

  • Seems to work OK recording from GeoShred. Here is a screen capture showing the per-note controller editing:

  • Care to share a short video? Can you easily switch between notes while editing controller data? Does controller data automatically move / stretch with notes when you move them / change their lengths? Does it get duplicated with notes? Etc...

  • @SevenSystems I don’t have a YouTube account so video is a bit beyond me at the moment but I can try and answer in the form of pictures:

Here is the starting position with a note selected and the controller pane open:

I have used the handle to drag the length of the note and the pitch bend data stretches with it:

Here I have moved the note along slightly and the bend data moves with the note:

Note is duplicated and pitch bend data is also duplicated:

I click on the note above and the controller view changes to the per note pitch bend data for this note:

Here is the controller menu. The little green dots to the right of each controller show that it is present in the track:

Here is the per-note menu, again the green dot shows that there is controller data in the track for that note:

  • Wow, thanks! 🙏 looks like a legit implementation.

  • Can this record multiple tracks from AUM?

  • edited March 2021

@NimboStratus This is not the sort of thing I would normally do so I can't answer with any great authority but I just tested sending two separate channels of Atom 2 playing on a loop to two separate tracks in MTS and they recorded the input. I'm not sure what sync options there are though within MTS as I do not see any Ableton Link settings. I know you can add AUM as an IAA though so perhaps this lets it all sync up.

Edit: MIDI was sent via AudioBus virtual port

  • @NimboStratus I still have not found a way of syncing AUM with MTS. I thought I would be able to load both into AudioBus and have that sync them but it looks like MTS is not launching correctly in an AB output slot. I have mentioned this on the MTS forum. I know @Littlewoodg is experienced with using MTS, any thoughts on how/whether AUM can be synced with MTS?

I was able to play GeoShred from inside AUM and have the per-note MPE data recorded into MTS via AudioBus MIDI which is pretty cool. Loading GeoShred into an AU slot in MTS then allowed playback of the MPE performance.

One note about launching MTS in AB: its necessary to open tracks in MTS for AB first. Open an Audio track and assign input to AB...

Thanks for offering to take a look. I did find the post where you mentioned this workaround but I can’t get it to work. I have tried various combinations of having MTS open with an audio track listening on AB input with record armed or not, then opening AB and adding MTS but I never see the AB sidebar and it stays in “tap to launch” state.

  • Giel just confirmed that it does not look to be working in iOS 14 so is investigating.

Yep something is up...I’ll get with Mr Bremen’s on the MTS forum

  • So is this the only iOS daw that can work with mpe data like this? Would love to be able to record Animoog with midi and then tweak the sound after the fact

I think AEM and GarageBand record it too, as does Photon AU. MTS is the first one I have seen attempt to tackle MIDI 2, but I do not think the spec is actually finalised for that yet.

AEM has some controller editing but I do not remember it being as good as what I see in MTS.

So I guess what I want to do is record MPE via Animoog, then wherever it is recorded, send that mpe midi BACK to Animoog, and have it sound the same as I played it, so I can tweak the patch to the melody. I’d also like to be able to quantize it too. Can this be done on iOS?

  • @db909 I do not have Animoog but assuming that you can record its output into MTS then (in theory) you would be able to hear the same performance if you were to send the notes back into Animoog.

There are facilities for note quantisation, and this also quantises controller data e.g.

    Start with this:

Select note and “EDIT” opens up a panel which lets you quantise the note:

    AEM likely offers similar facilities.

Atom 2 is planned to eventually have support for automation editing and MPE recording so that will at some point be another option.

  • @MisplacedDevelopment thank you for the info

  • Wow! So, congratulations to Giel Bremmers for being the first!

  • Will you be the second? ;-)

;) I would've been the first already mid-2020, but personal "issues" are slowing me down tremendously.

I'm still in high hopes for April (this year) though! 😄

So all the best for you and your wonderful app!

  • @SevenSystems : Blessings to you sir .. You were on here all the time with your wonderful product when kife sotuations allowed. I could never use it because of the mixing time signature issue but besides that it was and is an incredible app , not to mention the new one you said you were working on. The forum misses your presence .

  • @Telstar5 @Ploe thanks to both of you, it's much appreciated. I hope I'm on the road to better times and that Xequence development will resume at the usual pace at some point. I guess many of us have been through tough times in the past year, although for me it's mostly not coronavirus-related (I think, although all the lockdown and restrictions stuff also takes a toll on mental health I assume).

  • New update out, including a couple of nice changes around snapping controllers to grid and restoring plugin state after a crash. Hoping these will make MTS an even better host for Atom 2. Really looking forward to finishing work today!

The Holy Grail, finally a controller editor where I can type the value and snap it to the grid as well as drag it!

  • New update out, lots to sift through here. This evening’s plans may be cancelled…

  • The ability to duplicate tracks and the way you can use the Apple Pencil now to freely select and move notes around the scoring view are in particular very welcome.
