Audio Problem with iOS 14.6

Recently, many of my projects crashed with Koala sampler. At first, I thought it was Koala sampler the problem, but I think it's not.

The thing that I suspect is this.

Let's say I open a random iOS synth. I play with it and then, I close it.

Now all apps are closed on my iPad.

If I immediately open Koala sampler, the audio of my iPad will not be available so Koala sampler will not be able to load my project. So I will see the screen "Loading" forever. If I close the app, there will be an error. The next time I will open Koala, all my sample will be gone.

(To dodge this problem, I have to wait 20 minutes or reset my iPad before opening any new music app).

It never happen to me when I'm using my MOTU M2.

And it will be impossible to load the crash project in Koala. I will click "load crashed project" and nothing will happen.

Same thing with AUM.

If I use a synth, close it and then, open AUM, the PLAY button will be red (unusable) to inform me that no audio is available.

This happened to me on an iPad Air 4 with iOS 14.6 without audio interface.

I really really suspect iOS 14.6 to be the problem here.

  • Apple: Stop developing more powerful chips to sell more iPad and make more money, and begin to improve your iOS stability.

It's easier to make money with a new chips than a new stable OS.

They probably put a lot more energy to create more powerful chips than to improve the stability of their OS.

Or maybe I'm just complaining without knowing everything I should know.

  • I’ve been having the same problem with iPad 8th gen since 14.5. My old 2017 pro doesn’t have the issue. It definitely seems to be an issue with newer chips and 14.5+

Turning off microphone access for the apps in the iOS system settings got things working again for me. Not ideal but it’s a workaround while we wait for Apple to fix it.

This is why I love this forum. Thank you.

So I’ve been dealing with this for months, not going to get too excited but seems to have worked. THANK YOU

  • What’s a home button?

    :D

This has definitely been a lot more prevalent after iPad os14 for my ‘17 iPad Pro 10.5.

Luckily, there is an easy fix. Before any session, I hold down power until the shutdown screen shows up. Then, I press and hold the home button as I release the power button.

In 2 seconds or so, your iPad should return to passcode screen. It won’t do a full restart so you can get right to work but…your RAM and Audio/Midi devices will be reset and sessions should run smoothly from there.

"Apple. Because it just works." 👍

That fixes stability on my 2017 pro yes but I’ve not seen the issues in the OP on that device. On my recent 8th gen iPad I do get the exact same problems and the only thing that has fixed it for me is disabling the microphone access as described above. The reset trick doesn’t work, unfortunately.

Try the iOS 15 beta. Worked for me, no more audio trouble

So it's "they can't get their stuff together for multiple supported commercial versions, therefore let's go for the unsupported beta"? :) I mean, it may totally work, mate but you see why that sounds a tough ask. 🤷

  • I totally see that, I just got tired of the issues and got desperate. iPad is my only platform for music, and 14.6 was not working at all so I had nothing to lose by trying the beta.

  • FWIW I have an 8th gen iPad on 14.6 and don’t see anything like this. Weird!!

I wonder if there’s an occasional manufacturing glitch that causes these kinds of issues.

It could be I guess. Everything was running fine before 14.5 though. It’s very peculiar.

It’s something they never should have removed. Same goes for the 1/8” audio jack.

  • I am noticing some glitches and wish I didn't update now.

I'm trying to workout how I might be able to have a backup or firmware ready to restore should I need to in the future.
Anyone know if this is feasible? I have been using iCloud backup because iTunes wont let me which doesn't seem possible to roll back.

Trying out 3uTools now which looks like it might work...

You can only downgrade iOS to a version that is still signed by Apple. This is usually only one or two versions back, and those are cancelled relatively soon after an update is released. Currently, iPadOS 14.6 is the only signed version for my iPad 6. Signing is done by encryption, verified when iPad displays "Verifying update". In the past, there were hacks to beat this, but I believe that is no longer lossible.

Yeah right I'm looking at the worst case and I only really care about losing data from my AUM & AB3 sessions.
I have now exported all this data now via 3uTools and feel much better knowing I can back these up over time and restore them if necessary...

  • Anyone download the 14.7 beta yet? Did it make any difference?

You can use some iOS repair software to solve this issue if it is more convenience for you. I used TunesKit iOS System Recovery to downgrade iOS, it did a good job.
