Kompresor by Shattered Glass Audio (try before it goes on sale / public beta)

SGASGA
edited July 2021 in General App Discussion

The purpose of this public beta is to give you a chance to try Kompresor before it goes on sale on 8 September, 2021.
You can download Kompresor at: https://testflight.apple.com/join/jJ485Qos
You can see a demo of Kompresor in action here:
https://youtu.be/cthaTQwh7_g

Kompresor is a versatile and powerful, yet easy to use, compressor. With several compression algorithms under the hood, Kompresor is suitable for use on a wide variety of signals, on the mix bus, or for mastering.

For the most transparent compression, ideal for mastering, use AUTO envelope. Use PROGRAM envelope for an easy mix bus gluing effect. If you are after the classic style compression switch to feedback configuration. Select RMS detector for a smoother compression suitable for vocals, guitars, etc.

To help you fine tune compression parameters enable DELTA feature to monitor only the difference between the uncompressed and compressed signal. Last but not least, Kompresor has an external side chain input for those times when you need to duck one signal based on another one.

Features:

  • Three types of compression Attack/Release envelopes SIMPLE, AUTO, and PROGRAM.
  • External sidechaining (only in hosts that support external sidechaining)
  • Very fast attack time - 0.01ms
  • Ratio up to 30:1
  • Soft knee up to 50dB width
  • Feedforward and feedback configuration
  • Peak and RMS detectors
  • Sidechain high pass filter
  • Parallel processing
  • Monitoring only the difference between the uncompressed and compressed signal
  • Intelligent auto makeup gain
  • 4x oversampling to avoid aliasing
  • Plenty of factory presets to provide a starting point

Kompresor is primarily an AUv3 effect. To use Kompresor as a plug-in, you will need an AUv3 compatible host such as Garageband, AUM, etc.
Kompresor application is there to provide a user manual and a chance to use Kompresor with the microphone input.

    Working now. Thanks so much.

    @SGA

I've already tested it on some mixes.

    It's nice.

    Sounds good.

Even when pushed to the max,
it retains a certain amount of clarity.

    Very musical.

I would wish for LUFS metering if or when
I would use it for Mastering other than that very cool.

I can see myself using it quite often.

Thanks for letting us test it.

  • It’s not working here yet (UK)

  • Peep this while you can. Have been testing the for a little while now and it’s amazing. Super flexible with the different envelope modes and feedforward/feedback configs. Plus I love the interface, clean & logical but still easy on the eyes.

  • Oh and the delta function is invaluable too! For any newbies trying to better understand compression, the delta feature will isolate just what the compressor is doing so you can get a better feel for what the controls are doing to your sound

  • @Gravitas
Thanks for trying out Kompresor. LUFS metering is on the roadmap for a future release.

We did not restrict Kompresor to any region and TF does not have any region restrictions either. Please, give it a try a bit later and see if it works.

    Good to know.
    Looking forward to the release.

  • Great interface! I'm surely going to try it out.

  • This is a very nicely featured compressor. If you don’t own TB or FF compressors then it is very compelling. If you do, then you’re going to buy it anyway because you’re into compression, or it might need a little something extra to set it further apart? I really like the super fast attack, feed forward and feedback, and delta.

One of the few features that sets Kompresor apart is its AUTO envelope. AUTO envelope is an auto release envelope with the release time calculated based on the crest factor for each sample. This results in a smooth release envelope which introduces very little distortion. That makes AUTO envelope ideal for mastering, in most cases.
If you are more into auto release type fond in some hardware compressors give PROGRM envelope a try. It's designed to provide exactly that.
Also, with the number of options at your disposal you can simulate the behavior of many different hardware compressors. Example is in the demo (YT video), Snare is compressed as one would with 1176 to bring the snare tail up in volume.

You can use DELTA feature also as a creative effect. Fun time if you are into that kind of thing.

    Hope this helps.

Great info! I take back what I said. It sounds like it stands up there on its own. Nice work 👍. I’m looking forward to getting to know this compressor.

  • I’m very interested in the “Delta” control, it’s a great feature and I don’t think I’ve seen that in any other compressor. It’s really easy to overdo compression, precisely because it’s hard to “hear” for most of us so one tends to over compress. This Delta feature might help. Compression is hard to master!.

Btw I found an article explaining the difference between fastforward and feedback compression in case anyone’s curious.

I think in the TB and FF compressors it is the headphones icon and is called Audition (there are separate Audition buttons for the sidechain as well if you’re looking). It is indeed an excellent feature and great that this compressor has it.

Again, another really nice feature. In FF, I think Clean is feedfoward and Classic is feedback.

This compressor is right up there with the top tier compressors on iOS in terms of flexibility. The auto release function outlined above is also a really nice feature that brings it inline with the two I keep mentioning. I’m not saying it needs anything else (there’s an argument for keeping things simple) but other comparative features that @SGA may have already evaluated are over sampling, look ahead, and the ability to limit the compression to a certain dB range.

Thank you for checking Kompresor out and for your feedback/impressions. Much appreciated.

Just to give you a perspective on why does Kompresor have features it has. Kompresor is the iOS port of, a never released desktop version, of the SGA's internal go-to compressor. As such, it has features that we found necessary and/or useful. Since we are not special snow flakes, others find those same features necessary and/or useful. :)

With our move towards using mobile devices more and more for music production, we started porting plugins we use all the time, with the first one being Phoenix and Kompresor as the second one.

Kompresor uses 4x oversampling, and the user cannot turn it off. There are two reasons for that:
    1. Compression is a nonlinear process which in general results in aliasing without oversampling.
    2. Kompresor would not be able to have 0.01ms (i.e. 10 microseconds) attack time at 44.1 or 48 kHz. Sampling time interval @ 48kHz is ~0.02ms.
Latency that oversampling introduces is ~0.229ms @ 48kHz, and we report that to the host.

Lookahead. We at SGA never found lookahead useful enough to implement it. That does not mean that lookahead is not useful, it's just that we never had any use for it in a compressor. Lookahead in a limiter is a different story though. Having said that, adding lookahead to Kompresor is on the roadmap.

Now that Kompresor is a commercial product we will add features based on the level of demand from users.

  • Why not iOS 13.4.1?
    I can't try it😉.

Thank you. I love the thought that has gone into this compressor. It’s a killer release 👏

  • Thanks for the beta invite/trial, all ok for me on UK sign up. Had a quick go, interface is great and immediately finding uses for that delta function. Lovely stuff.

Sorry for the late reply, did not see your post until now.
We had to draw the line what is the minimum iOS version we will support and it happened to be above 13.4.1, sorry. If you decide to update your iOS, you should be in good shape.

  • I’m still really liking this compressor. I did not realize at first that the user selectable feedforward and feedback modes and the different detector types actually make it stand out from the crowd and give it something a little different to FF and TB. It means you can get very detailed and very subtle with how your compression fits in your mix.

Hope you guys are having fun with Kompresor. Just a reminder. There are 4 weeks left, before Kompresor goes on sale on 8 Sept.

Thanks for exploring Kompresor. Without feedback configuration, among other things, you cannot properly do 1176 style compression. We used it in the demo to compress a snare to enhance the snare tail.
