Best App for a drum circle?

Hey guys, kind of a weird question lol. But I'm going to a drum circle this saturday and don't have a drum. The host has spare drums but they hurt my hands/arms to bang on for hours. I've got a midi controller and I'm wondering if there's an app that focuses on finger drumming? I've got a ton of drum machine apps but hey are all sequencers. Basically I just want a drum pad to finger drum on. Best options for that? Thanks!

Comments

  • I don’t know how the MIDI assigning works but GarageBand has great acoustic drums.

  • DrumJam would be the best option imo

    Luis Martinez apps as well

I'll bet the average drum circle goer would view an iPad like the Newport Folk Festival viewed Bob Dylan's electric guitar... as a sign of the apocalypse.

I'd use sticks or mallets to fit in. But it you do play an iPad app let us know how you are
received and if the drummers show any interest in the digital domain.

I use the iPad primarily for it's headphone capabilities so I can go crazy and not have anyone notice.

So, I'd get out the iPad and put on headphones and have someone ask to hear what you're doing... then it's on that guy.

  • DrumJam, they’ll hate you for it 😂🤣😂

  • DrumJam. Nothing else even comes close.

    Hopefully out of jealousy! :)

But yeah there may be some weird reactions to an iPad in a drum circle. I bet a bunch of them think it's cool as hell though.

  • I imagine your iPad will hardly be heard in a drum circle unless you are using speakers. At which, it’s just obnoxious. As mentioned before, I’d grab some mallets or hand drum appropriate sticks, or even tambourine or shakers. Honestly if the drums are hurting your hands, you’re hitting them too hard and in the wrong spot. Go early and ask a facilitator how to play the drum.

    Agreed.

    This is good advice.

    Percussionist here.

I'm learning percussion using a Louson Drums CajonTab, and even with better technique, my hands would probably hurt after a 3 hour long drum circle. But I would still follow that advice.

I see it as being kind of like developing callouses as a guitarist, except that the pain is something to be gently avoided, instead of ignoring it or leaning into it. But there's still some element of "toughening up your hands", right? It's just not a prerequisite for attending a drum circle.

Asrodot Drums would be my idea, besides Impaktor

    Just had an update too.

Might I offer an alternate solution?

Is this a suggestion as an alternative way to toughen up your hands or as alternative percussion instruments for a drum circle? I can see it either way.

If you want a "drum circle" there is obviously only one choice - "Patterning". Just look at it... :-)

    Another vote for Impaktor

  • I might be remembering wrong, but doesn't impactor have to be used with headphones, otherwise you will get undesirable feedback?

    True, true
You could use it without... but the threshold would be quite low, and it would probably be affected but traditional drum skins from the rest of the drum circle.

    Daaaaaaaaaad!

Correct, and you’d need some form of amplification anyway. I don’t think that iPads are very suitable for a drum circle.

I had completely forgotten about this one... Perfect timing, too (no pun intnended) because my old band is trading stuff back and forth (all separated by minimum 500 miles) and the drummer is not sure how to contribute to the iterations when he's not at a rehearsal studio and this might just be perfect.

  • For a drum circle? I would definitely rethink taking an iPad...
