GarageBand iOS Update - Artists Packs and Lady Gaga/Dua Lipa Live Loops Project
Glad to see the app is still alive. New update came out today.

I do have a feeling we'll get a major feature update to Garage Band when iOS15/iPadOS15 ships.
After installing all the packs for GarageBand it's almost ~5GB in total...
That would be awesome if it happens. To be honest, there’s a lot to dig through these packs. Presets, drum kits, and more.
Waouh! So happy to see Mark Lettieri and Tom Misch packs!
Mark Ronson pack coming tomorrow as well - to coincide with a new Apple TV doc out tomorrow
From the OP-linked press release:
Companion Experience for “Watch the Sound With Mark Ronson”
In the new Apple Original docuseries “Watch the Sound With Mark Ronson,” Oscar- and Grammy Award-winning producer-artist Mark Ronson explores the intersection of technology and musical innovation. With the exclusive “Watch the Sound With Mark Ronson” Producer Pack in GarageBand, users can extend the viewing experience by getting hands-on time with GarageBand versions of the music technology featured in every episode, from sampling to drum machines, synths to reverb, and vocal effects to distortion.
Yeah all packs installed ~3GBs
I’m really into features not content and presets. GB is so crippled compared to the other DAWs. Guess it’s meant to be simple and dumbed-down.
Looks like Doug will do a live stream later today featuring the new packs

So… ok cool but, for sure, the remix packs can’t be used in our own work. What about the producer packs?
They could at least rename the “master effects” bus properly. For an educational app this is a disservice to new musicians.
Crippled? GarageBand is like the only sequencer on iOS that properly supports multitouch, has top quality touch instruments, regularly updated, clip launcher functionality, etc. It’s the others that need to catch up to GarageBand.
Well, good thing I got this new iPad.
I haven’t had Garageband installed in a long time… (along with many other apps) excited to see what’s new!
Core app largely unchanged in 4 years. However lots of new content: sound packs , loops etc
You are right, but somehow they seem to be doing something wrong because GB just doesn’t seem to be that popular. Personally i tried to stick with it because on paper it has everything - its free, comes with a bunch of content, etc… but somehow it just never inspired me (now im in love with AUM). Maybe just the UI is a bit odd to navigate with a too many animations slowing you down, i don’t know, but it seems that somehow despite ticking a lot of boxes people are not really flocking to it.
It is very powerful and has tons of features. But people tend to prefer to lament what’s missing rather than enjoy what’s there.
The lack of busses can be frustrating but this can be approximated by bouncing stems and using the tracks as sub mixes or you just import the stereo mixdown to process it with plugins. As with all DAWs on iOS you need to use workarounds to make the most of them.
None of the other DAWs on iOS are anywhere near as full featured as desktop DAWs either. You have to put up with compromises no matter which one(s) you use. They’re all ‘crippled’ in one way or another.
Different audience than here or music forums in general — but GB has many more users than any other music app. It’s not even close.
I would bet that GB is significantly more popular than any of the others, but what’s popular doesn’t concern me. And it isn’t “free”, it is baked into the cost of the device and programming labor you paid for. I think people have the wrong idea about GB because they assume it is “free” and not serious. But Apple has vastly more resources and talent to put into its software than most developers. There is nothing as full-featured as GB on iOS in my experience, and I’ve played around with quite a few. There’s stuff like Auria which is essentially a fiddly desktop interface ported to a tablet interface, but Apple will never do something like that for obvious reasons.
And it makes up for what it lacks by letting you work around it - things like no master bus don’t bother me because you can achieve similar results anyway.
Is iOS 14 needed for this update?
Yeah, iOS 14 is a requirement. It's a downside with Garageband. Kinda wish it wasn't so OS dependent but it's been the same with Logic and Garageband for Mac so I doubt Apple would stop it all of a sudden.
Plus, it's a way to "gently coax" iOS users to update their software.
Well said. I always keep going back to Garageband because of its ease of use, and simplicity. More features would be nice, but honestly, I'm pretty comfortable with what I've got.
Thanks a lot for your answer @seonnthaproducer .
Meh, I don’t want some pop artist to write my tracks 😂
Are the packs also available for Mac GarageBand or just iOS?
Just iOS. That said I'm guessing Logic Pro should be able to open them.
So it now has sends and buses?
No, I thought maybe that was what was meant too, but same old Master Effects with a reverb and a delay
Not yet, though they usually lag a few weeks before the new sounds are made available in Logic
Some fun sounds for sure but it's like no matter what it's always got that Garageband sound to it.
Stupid rules concering Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga loops - copyrightprotected, so, you can’t use them in any of your own music projects… Silly Apple…
