What apps for 6/8 time?

Has anyone found any DrumJam patches that sound good in six? Any other apps with good grooves in six? I’m coming up pretty dry here. So far Steve Gadd is the only one giving me any satisfaction.

  • Probably I’m misunderstanding this... are you looking for loops?

I always liked how Modstep handled different meters

    Drambo

Yes, either audio or midi. I have yet to make DJ sound good in six, or any meter other than the original.

  • I do have some midi loops in 6/8, but I can’t get them to play right. I loaded them into Atom and set AUM to 6/4, but it didn’t sound good. This seems like it should be possible to set up, but I have yet to crack it.

  • Lumbeat apps

Just change the groove grouping 4,6 or 2,6
    Super quick

And put fills off or intensity low

  • AfroLatin has 23 specific 6/8 patterns built in.. 👍 Even though it’s percussion as opposed to strict drum kit beats, it could be a good starting point for your own 6/8 grooves.. one element could inspire you..

  • Not sure if it is what you are asking for but you can set a song to 6/8 in Garageband and have the AI drummers come up with something.

GarageBand, NanoStudio 2, Gadget, LK, GroupTheLoop can manage 6/8.

Can you post a demonstration? Your Atom clips probably don't care what the AUM meter is. Atom has a tempo adjustment. Perhaps your clips will sound like you expect them to if you set Atom's tempo multiplier to 0.5

You can’t edit the accent of triplets in GB. Lumbeat way easier and faster

True , when asked , I was more referring to Gravity and perfect by Ed in 12/8

  • ZenBeats handles different time signatures well. I just did a little jam in it in 6/8 to test.

  • Check out the “Hey Metronome” app by Audiokot. It even has the drums for Ed Sherrean.

I would still use GarageBand if I wanted to record it or use it in a DAW.

  • You really can do this with anything that allows you to enter triplet values. 😂

I hate to be the lone voice in the wilderness who keeps saying this, but GarageBand can work with 4/4, 3/4 and 6/8. I wish it could do more (with custom time signatures) but considering how many drum machines and loops are strictly 4/4, it’s a good alternative.

  • I keep thinking there could be some way to get DrumJam to sound good in six or twelve, just by choosing the right loops. Has anyone accomplished this?

Cool. I thought that Drambo only could do 4/4 3/4 and 5/4 ( if you want the 1 best highlighted )
Do i speed up the tempo and use 2 3/4 bars?

  • Personal preferences...I love Gadget. :) It allows for custom time signatures per scene. With the right workarounds, you can pull of polymeters and polyrhythms. Drambo is a good one for custom time signatures (as well as polymeters and polyrhythms). Nanostudio 2 can also do time signature changes on the timeline (as well as polymeters and polyrhythms).

As others have said, any app that can utilise triplets on a piano roll grid can pull off 6/8 time. :) Cheers and good luck.

I see what you mean. Everything seems to have a 4/4 feel even with only 6 beats. If you don’t watch the beat indicator, you don’t even realize you’re not in 4/4.

If I cycle through patterns for each part I can sometimes find some that sound OK. More trouble than it’s worth IMO, though maybe some of them sound better in context with other instruments with a more 6/8 feel.

  • Atom is fine for 6/8. I am curious to hear what it is you find wrong about how your 6/8 loops play back from Atom.

6/8, 6/4, 3/4 can all work sometimes one has to use a 1/2 or 2 multiplier depending on the feel.

If you were addressing my comment, it is specifically about DrumJam and the original question, not about Atom.

I was addressing OP. Apologies that I didn't make it clear. I was hoping to see if I could get OP on the path to making work what he thought should work but didn't.

    That or use Atom.

3/4 can be used for 6/8. Adjust tempo or your playing. 3/4 vs 6/8 is a notation convention to interpreting notation easier but it is pretty straightforward to create music in 6/8 even if a host only knows abut 3/4.
