USB-C Cable for Air 4

I’ll open by saying I’m a little paranoid due to all the stories of folks bricking their usb c iPads with 3rd party hubs (some Apple approved). Anyhow I use the Apple AV adapter joint and it works well for me, but I do want a longer 2m charging cable. Do I have to buy the genuine Apple cable to be safe or does the cable not cause any issues if using Apple charging block and Apple AV Adapter? If I need the Apple cable, there are 2 model numbers that I found MLL82AM/A is one but it says it’s for the MBP. This may be a dumb question, but I’d rather look dumb than brick my shit.

    “Life moves pretty fast.”

If you don’t buy the cheapest cable it should be fine. To power the iPad properly you should check the maximum PD Watts the cable can do. I’m using a 60W cable with a 60W USB-C power supply for my iPad Pro and it charges my iPad Pro really quick. The apple power supply is 30W. A good cable should be active, e.g. with an eMarker chip - only very cheap cable don’t have that and should be avoided. The chips are needed to negotiate the protocols and charging Wattage with both ends. If you need a cable to connect peripherals with a high data transfer rate then look at the supported USB transfer modes. For USB-C cables best would be USB 3.2. There is also USB 4 but it’s very new and hardly any gear supports it. To connect a monitor the cable must support DP-Alt.

Best choice is a Thunderbolt cable as they support everything in the highest standard but they are expensive. You can buy them blindly as TB is a very good spec. The apple cables are Thunderbolt. When looking for good USB-C cables I made good experiences with Nimaso cables but you need to look at the supported protocols and specs to make the right choice.

  • Short answer: buy like you would for any computer equipment.

Your iPad is now standard USB-C and will benefit/suffer from any features or flaws of whatever cable you decide on. This has nothing to do with Apple’s branding, or whether it is “officially supported” or sold on apple.com website.

Personally, I would buy a well-known brand that you can expect to perform well. Like you said, its not worth having a crappy cable ruin your iPad. I like the Anker brand sold on Amazon, decent warranty and they last pretty well.

  • @Hmtx thanks, I ruined an iPhone back in the day with a cheap cable and I never want to go through that again.
