Sapiens - Does anybody want to create a track using sample/quotes from the author?

Sapiens is a good read. I’d highly recommend it. Last year I contacted the author’s website and asked if they would allow me to create a piece of music using quotes/samples of the author (Yuval Noah Harari).
Here is their reply.

“Dear Ian,

Many thanks for your kind email and generous offer. Sounds very interesting!

Unfortunately we won't be able to record Yuval for this purpose, his schedule is way too hectic as is.

Having said that, should you create something with existing sound bits from various existing audio content available online, and send us the final piece, we'd love to listen to it and hopefully endorse it on our "artistic contributions by Yuval's fans channel" on YouTube.

I hope you understand the operational constraints on our end.

Regards,
Michael”

I wrote a piece of music and it was terrible. I’m not used to using vocal samples and I made a mess of it. I thought I’d post this here in case anybody fancies having a stab at it. Do a YouTube search, find some interesting quotes and sample away.

I’m gonna have another crack at it soon and send it to them. There’s no prize, it’s just for fun.

“The future of life on earth, to a large extent, depends on us” (Yuval Noah Harari)

I'd happily try this, but can you provide a link to a free copy of the abridged version?

I tried my favourite Librivox but no results.

I usually chop my arrangements up in Koala Sampler for beat making

You probably don't want to use audiobook audio. There's probably hundreds of hours of Yuval Harari talking on youtube, a gold mine of samples. Tracks from language samples is not my thing, but there are many different approaches you could take with Harari. For example, at least an entire song could be made from quotes of his regarding chimpanzees and the differences between them and humans (this is one of the main themes of Sapiens). One interesting twist might be that he has a fairly standard way of saying things, probably says nearly exactly the same thing in many different recordings, all with slight differences in language and/or inflection. For example, he sometimes refers to idea of 100,000 chimps being crammed into a stadium. When in the U.S. he might refer to Yankee Stadium, in Great Britain to Wembly Stadium, etc.

Here's set of youtube videos that could be a start for that:

Harari's two books after Sapiens are also excellent, "Homo Deus" and "21 Lessons for the 21st Century".

  • Thank you for the quick update. I shall get onto YT and elsewhere online to be creative with all that audio

  • Big big Yuval Harari fan here, I've read and loved all 3, Sapiens remaining my favourite.

    Yeah, great read!

  • I was going to use the audiobook version but it’s narrated by someone else so YouTube a good option, full of great quotes that are a bit better than ‘ooh yeah!’ and stuff.

  • Sapiens is excellent. It should be given to every student in every school worldwide, as an easily digestible overview of mankind.
It really is all you need to know.
Anything that promotes this can only be a good thing.
    Homo Deus is also excellent.
    Plenty of YouTube content available.
