Help! BM3 + iPad Pro M1 Question

Hi fam,
So I’m ready to buy a new iPad. I currently have an iPad 6 with only 32gb, it’s time to upgrade. How well does BM3 perform on an iPad Pro M1? Is it compatible? Any glitches?

Comments

  • Everything works as expected. Id suggest rethinking getting an m1 if its for audio only (and generic day to day stuff)

I was almost ready to pull the trigger on the M1 (for iOS music I mostly use BM3 with iPad5 these days) but then thought…. Mmmmm, I think I will wait to get the iPad9, especially if it gets the A13 and/or another gig of ram.

    Thank you for your insight!
    @AlmostAnonymous why rethink?
@AudioGus what are your thoughts on Logic possibly being ported for the M1?

  • Sadly, Logic on iPad may be as limited and underwhelming as Photoshop for iPad was.

But yah I do think I am at the point where the apps motivate my hardware decisions.

Gadget motivated me to go from iPad2(?) to Air1, then BM3 motivated me to get iPad5 then Pro10.5/2017…. Now BM3 is pretty sweet and solid with recent fixes (few more to come I think?) but it ran great on my 10.5 pro and the next base model may be even better than it was.

Not getting an M1 mostly came down to…

1.) BM3 will likely always just support single core. The iPad 9 will either have a geekbench score of 1100 or 1300. My 2017 Pro 10.5 had 829 and I was pretty happy with that. The M1 has 1700. Sure its a lot more, but it is a lot more money too and folks still say there are crackles with AUs. Seems like expensive overkill for me.

2.) lightning port, headphone jack and pencil 1 : I have a lot of dongles and stuff that add up. Would be an extra 300$ in pencil 2 and dongles, blech!

    Great points!
My biggest concern with the M1 is developer support. The M1 system is dependent on software that is streamlined for its architecture. Apple said the M1 is overkill on purpose to give developers space to be creative. Only time will tell. I was tempted by the Maschine+ and MPC One, but then I really dug into BM3 and read about some folks dumping MPCs and Maschines for BM3. I love the idea of being untethered then I thought to myself the iPad is untethered! 😂

I have a plethora of high quality MIDI controllers to make my iPad experience more tactile and expressive plus all the great plugins. I may stay in a holding pattern for the next iPad like you stated. Then again I feel like some interesting standalone devices are on the horizon too. I play much better not in front of a screen.

I can’t help but feel like the hunt for the next best thing is just as fun as making music sometimes. 🤣

@Stuntman_mike unless you need 12" display, 512gb+HD, or thunderbolt, youre not getting any real performance gains for that $$$. That includes the premium on applecare as well.
AUs still have their RAM caps, lack of real multicore apps in audio, etc....

Desktop chip that has to play by iphone rules.
I havent seen anything that an m1 could handle that my ipad mini5 couldnt.
I do wish they would finally move to usbC for everything.

I also dont see logic ever coming to the ipad.

Edit: that being said, its also announcement season, so wait.

For Maschine MK3 I bought a super long 50ft USB cable with a powered booster with the intention of using the Maschine with a super long leash all on the hardware.

It worked well enough for a few months but now I find the balance of Maschine controller and mouse/keyboard at a standing desk is the best for me. It does not require mouse/keyboard for the small fiddely things that make mouse/keyboard annoying and cumbersome. For me it is just best of both worlds. If I have the energy to stand then this works as best bang for time/energy buck.

If I am bagged and just need to lay down but don’t want to waste my brain cells on videos then BM3 is still good fun but it feels more like a game now then a super creative/productive experience. Maschine is simply the best flow I have ever felt and is where I also get the best results.

Probably looks wonky as hell but having arm rests and standing desk made a big difference heh.

Good points! I do graphic design and web design on my iPad as well. Wait it is.

I dont think youll see a bump in the pro lineup, but probably the mini and the non-air. Kinda waiting on a new mini. Preferred device. Ill trade the headphone jack for usb-c anyday. Prefer not to lose my button, but i have ways of dealing with that without touching the device.

    Smart setup!
I have a Mikro MK3 and MacBook Pro 2017. I love how streamlined Maschine is 🤩

Machine+ is tempting until I look at the price. I could buy an MPC One and MicroFreak for less. Having standalone Maschine is an amazing thought though. 😫

  • M+ is cool but not being able to work with vsts though would hurt me.

Have they finally let the maschine controllers work with the ios app (i know...its not that great of an app, but just curious if they got their heads outta their asses yet)?

Only Maschine+ is mappable to iOS.

    Ah, yeah that’s a bummer

Not mappable. I mean a plug and play controller for the app

Ah, nothing like that yet. I have a feeling something is on the horizon…

@AlmostAnonymous I feel like a Mikro “MK4” should be iOS compatible with an updated Maschine app. It seems like a no brainer to open their device to iOS because it would make them more money. They would sell a ton of Mikros!

  • Mikro needs knobs and other goodies. Too many pad controllers out there now that have a larger feature set.

Well, I’m thinking if NI makes a Mikro that works with iOS it will probably only work with their app, which would need to be updated. Although it would be amazing to see an AUV3 Maschine!!! So I could see a similar workflow on iOS as it is on desktop, tightly integrated with the app, sort of a NKS on iOS. Additional knobs and such probably wouldn’t happen.

The original idea for iMaschine was an “on the go” sketch pad that you can then export to Maschine on desktop for continued work. I don’t see NI making a universal type controller like a MiniLab or MPK/MPD anytime soon.
