Help me choose a midi/audio interface

Hi,

I'm currently looking for an iPad (6 generation) as a sequencing tool. I'm looking to sequence a Kodamo essence FM and I think a keystep / iPad combo can offer a lot. I would like your advice on choosing audio-midi interface. I would like to:
1/ Send midi/receive midi
2/ record audio on the iPad and coming out from the iPad directly to my computer (for instance i I use typical synths app on the iPad.

Beside, I already have a Behringer UMC404HD sound card. Thanks for your advices!

Comments

  • Does UMC404HD have ADAT? Could get another interface and connect the two with ADAT.

What's your budget? Do you need a few or lots of preamps/inputs?

If only a few inputs are needed, then the new iConnectivity Audio4+ should be a good choice for bridging computer and iPad.

  • UMC404HD doesn't have ADAT.
My budget is low and would rather spend less than on the Ipad itself (280€)
For audio inputs, I'm not sure I would use it a lot, but I would like to be able to record audio outputs on stereo if for example I use granular synths apps.

  • If you’re willing to invest around the same amount as youv’e spent on the iPad, a LaunchPad Pro mk3 has many advantages for your setup in that it has it’s own inbuilt step seqencer to pair with your keystep to go alongside it’s 1x midi in and 2x midi outs. It’s class complient so it can be used as a general midi input device to your ipad as well as having an ability sequence midi hardware.

The best value for money midi interfaces are probably Miditech MIDIface ones which can be had found for around the 40-60 euro mark depending on whether you opt for the 2x2 or 4x4 options but I’m not sure if these are recognised by iOS devices so you might require something like the iRig Midi 2 to provide the midi link to the ipad (another 60 euro or thereabouts). The iRig Midi 2 alone would fit your needs so you could start there and expand out as needed.

  • Increasingly I’m simply using a lightning to usb lead to record iPad synth audio directly into Logic Pro X. I think it’s a good way of doing this.

  • LaunchPad pro doesn't seem to interest me because I already have the launchpad mini mk2 and I have an eurorack sequencer (westlicht performer) which has a midi input and output and I can use it as midi to CV converter.
A Lightning to usb adapter for audio and a iRig midi 2 can be sufficient for my needs?

Hard to say but the cost is minimal.

From the product description, it seems like you might be able to use the Kodamo to do just about everything.

It looks like it has USB Midi In/Out. If it's class-compliant, you should be able to plug your iPad into it with the Apple CCK and be able to send Midi that way. If not, then an USB-Midi DIN cable is less than $20 US.

The UMC404 should also be able to be plugged into the iPad via USB (you'll need a USB hub (probably powered) to have both this and the Kodamo plugged in to the CCK). The audio out(s) from the Kodamo could then be plugged into the UMC404.

That leaves audio out to the computer. Do you have a PC or a Mac? Do you need to be able to have midi out to the Kodamo at the same time as audio out to the computer? Is live audio out to the computer essential, or would just transferring rendered audio files over there be enough if it was easy?

If you have a Mac, it might make more sense to connect the Kodamo and the UMC404 to the Mac via USB. Then you could connect the iPad to the Mac via Lightning cable using iDAM. You would then be able to send MIDI and audio to the Kodamo from the iPad via the Mac, and plug the Kodamo Audio Out into the UMC404.

That actually seems like it might do the job at zero added cost. I think. Maybe. 😬🧐

You'd be tethered to the Mac though.

Yes I have a mac mini.
That's it, I'll try to start like this! Thanks! ;)

I have a Zoom U24 and can recommend it. It works really well as an audio and midi interface (with full size 5 pin DIN MIDI) with iPads and has battery as well as USB/Adaptor power so works with any iPad even without a powered hub. Keep some spare rechargeable AAs on hand and you're good to go. You just need the Apple CCK.

Alternatively there is something like the IK Multimedia iRIG Pro Duo which comes with a Lightning cable, so doesn't need the CCK but uses proprietary cables and 2.5mm MIDI which requires breakout cables.

If you don't care about battery power and are happy to be tethered to AC, then you can't go wrong with whichever Focusrite's that are in budget.

Alternatively, do a search on the forum. This question gets asked all the time and there are hundreds of answers. And opinions.
