How to DJ using an iPad? Here’s a short video of a street performance DJ did just that (in Toronto)
Whoa, that’s a long title. Thankfully the video is short (less than 3 minutes). Here you go
What setup have you had the most success with?

I actually played a few clubs and festivals in Prague with Djay. That was before it went subscription.
That was on my iPhone 4s. Christ what a hipster nerd I was in 2011
No way. That's awesome. I actually never used it before subscription. Would you still use the app even with the free version, or are there any other recommendations?
My dj days are long behind me so I can’t help you I’m afraid. Sorry. But I guess the free version should work!
The new DJay AI works rather well, but alas i left off, because subscription. I dont DJ anymore ether, but its a nice thing tomhave around for get togethers.
Well, that certainly took me back to the 80s. My brother was a in a breakdancing crew that won at a State level in competition. He was really good back then.
Thanks @sevenape . I may actually try out the subscription as well and make notes on the differences eventually. The AI that @AlmostAnonymous mentioned seems really fascinating.
No way. That's awesome @NeuM . Does your brother still dance or at least teach other dancers?
It def works better with newer ipads. And it doesnt hurt to sub for a month and cancel it. Theres a free trial for a week whith is more than enough.
No, he doesn’t. He moved from competitive dance many, many years ago.
Pics of him in his parachute pants or it didn't happen
Or at least the pumas/addidas with the new yorker laces
Yeah, they wore all of that stuff! LOL.
to be quite honest, those old school suede pumas are the only shoes i wear (other than flip flops).
i have them on auto replenish from amazon
Even with the subscription model, it's worth it.
The neural AI or whatever they call it that stems the tracks out for you is incredibly effective and awesome and makes for some wild transitions. The default automix sucks but you can tweak it to use the neural AI and have longer transition periods and it actually does a pretty damn good job. Don't tell anyone.
If you owned Djay Pro, you get most of the features in the new one, but I've gotten way more than my $50 worth and am going to reup my subscription next year. I waste hours pulling tracks off Tidal and throwing them into the neural AI and coming up with mashups. (My favorite one? Siouxsie and the Banshees x Onyx ...

Also, they are constantly developing the app and looking at pain points - the access to the files app got jacked up with the move over to the new iOS and they came in and fixed that pretty quickly afterward.
For me, there aren't really any kind of alternatives that have the same feature set. It took me a while to decide to drop the coin for the subscription and it was well worth it - I would pay much more per year but I'd easily drop 3 or 4 times the yearly sub to buy it outright ...
So to get the full app experience, you gotta bite the bullet and pay the subscription and also get a tidal account. This gives you access to all the music ever and a ton of music videos on Tidal you can VJ with as well.
Not everyone will want to do this but if you're seriously wanting to be a gigging DJ or even just a semi-serious hobbyist I cannot think of a better platform if you're gonna stick with iPad.
Just my two cents ... tidal + djay is about $120 a year for the tidal and $50 a year for the app subscription, and I definitely feel like I'm getting my money's worth. I'll make that back in one gig (except for COVID and all, and the lockdown running my home club out of business
)
Edit to the above: I WOULDN'T pay much more per year .... but I would pay more to buy the app outright.
Are you finding a lot of club tracks on Tidal, or is it mainly pop and hip hop?
I've been using Traktor DJ and my iPad for all my DJing for a couple years now and enjoy it a lot. I actually sold my S8 and now just use a Z1. Nice having a bit of physicality while still being portable, and I honestly never used half the functionality of th S8 anyway.
I've used djay a lot over the years and enjoyed it too, but the subscription aspect drove me off right as I was about to give it another go. Good to hear people think it's still worth it. Hmm....
EVERYTHING is on Tidal - it's like Spotify or anything else. I play more obscure stuff for the most part (witch house, southern rap, pastel goth, dark r&b) and it's all there. There's an option for "show related tracks" in DJAY for a song and I've started just picking tracks from that list to go next. In general, bangers in, bangers out.
As far as music videos it seems to be more mainstream stuff but when I went on a weird VJ kick I found things, but it really is the shallow end of the pool.
