Roland Cloud Update

I know most of you guys don't believe in subscriptions. But with Zenbeats being a part of it I think it's worth mentioning that they have updated the Pro membership to now include any 2 legendary synths you want. You can add access to a synth and install it. Make a song with it, remove access and add another synth. I think this increases the value of the Pro membership. No longer stuck with D50 and TR-808.

They've also included the Sound Canvas VA as well.

  • Apparently, not just "most of the guys here" don't believe strongly enough in subscriptions 🤷😉

  • Lol. I mean I understand the sentiment. I actually got a free year of Pro when I got my MC-101, so this is really making me think about keeping it when it's up. For me, Zenology Pro is enough to keep it honestly. Just thought I'd share that info because it's a great value.

TBF, the one* reason I'm not even willing to look into a Roland subscription is the absolutely convoluted way they named and presented the options. What does which one of them include and how much will you end up paying and for what exactly? I'm sure it's all kosher and noble but last time I looked it was so confusing it totally looked like a scam. 🤷

*I mean I have other arguments against mobile music subscriptions, but in this case this thing simply stopped my inquiry right there and I never looked back.

  • Core - $2.99/month or $29.99 annually
    Pro - $9.99/month or $99.99 annually
    Ultimate - $19.99/month or $199.99 annually

Same here, and it’s the opposite of good value to me. I got the 808, 909, and JP8 emulations for free and they didn’t impress. How about a couple of new functions? Preserving classics shouldn’t hinder progression. And Zenology «Pro», a collection of pretty overused samples and basic VA isn’t anywhere near being worth a monthly fee when there’s stuff like Syntronik, Flowtones and SM2 around for a one time fee. Don’t even get me started on Zenbeats, it gives me a headache just looking at the UI.

Roland has really kept dropping the ball in recent years. From gorgeous and genre defining synths and drum machines to cool digital boxes like the XV 5080 or V-Synth. Zero creativity and an emphasis on consumer level stuff with little to no real innovations.

Is it everything Roland, because Stagelight existed before the Roland merger.

I agree with you on zenbeats but some people here love it. I've downloaded it many times and just can't seem to look at it too long. It's a shame though because they have some really awesome samples and loops.

Zenology Pro I find quite amazing sonically. It has lots of depth and really great emulations of acoustic and synthesized instruments.

I am staying away from IKM, haven't had much luck with them so it's a no from me. And as far as SM2 goes. It's ok. Convoluted and buggy for me. I have it on desktop and iOS and I have problems on both platforms. Not worth the hassle. Most of these synths on iOS don't really match up to desktop imho. Arturia's synths alone put most ios synths to shame imo. I think that's why Drambo is the answer to everything here. 🤷🏾‍♂️

To quote the classics - or just repeat myself, who knows at this point - the Zenbeats interface looks like the UX team manager mistakenly approved a first wireframe mockup draft and noone had the heart to tell him so they went with it.

I think it's just the modern Roland look. A house style/branding thing.

    I call it, "Repulsive."

I had a TR-8 but I couldn't bear it. AIRA green is effectively Kryptonite.

Officially, these are "striking good looks".

Beyond their impressive sound and modern versatility, AIRA products feature essential elements for active stage performers and avid tweakers. This means solid build-quality, straight-forward operation and striking good looks.

That's the previous generation. None of the Aira products of the past couple of years have the prominent green trim: TR-8S/6S, MC- grooveboxes, Verselab, the Boutiques, DJ-707m, etc. Everything is very understated now.

It means you choose 2. And you can change the 2 at any time.

  • Aren’t they very restrictive in what countries you can live in to actually have an account with them?

They're getting better than they were, it's true. I guess I'm hung up on designs from 5 years ago.

This whole aesthetic pushes me away. I see its fingerprints on the more recent stuff, even if they have toned it down and done away with the green edges.

(I don't doubt the power/usefulness/sound quality of any of this gear.)

The boutiques are another matter. I always thought they looked inviting, if a bit fiddly/toy-like.

Roland is forever repackaging and reselling the same stuff in slightly different forms, so hopefully one day we'll get the cloud synths for iOS. I'd love to have AUv3s of some of the classic romplers (JV-1080, XV-5080). Not enough to pay them a never-ending subscription, mind you.

  • MC-101/707 and TR-6S/8S are actually quite elegant. They remind me very much of the Novation series controllers. Especially when they sit and their Vegas mode activates.
