To upgrade or not to upgrade (iOS12 to iOS14)?

Hi all ... My 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 is stuck on iOS12 after I failed to upgrade to iOS13. It is working well for me and I have avoided the ‘missing auV3’ issues associated with iOS14. I mostly use AUM and Cubasis. However, there are also a growing number of apps that I can’t use, e.g. Mood Units, Drum Computer, Pure Piano, Atom2.

I am leaning toward upgrading to 14.7 before iOS15 lands, as it seems the issues may have been resolved and/or may not apply to me, e.g. I don’t use TestFlight or do any beta testing.

Before I take the plunge, I would be interested in thoughts from the community. Thanks

Best way is to share some AB3,AUM presets with AUs you mostly use .
Some on 64 buffer (to test real time efficiency ) and others heavier on 256
Then someone that has the same device can load the presets (assuming he has the AUs loaded) and report back
This is the only way ,
posts like "it works , fine , ok , no problems " on every iOS update is meaningless

  • I'd go straight to iPadOS15 to be honest...
...preferably after doing a backup then update/restore to get rid of the redundant cache files etc.

  • I was in similar situation at the beginning of the year, basic iPad 5 2017 with iOS12. I must say that I've had maybe 1 or 2 times when auv3 list was empty since the update. Sometimes icons in auv3 list are missing, I mostly use AUM and Drambo. In general UI of auv3s feels more smooth, I had some glitches with mirack auv3 on iOS12.

  • I have the same iPad model, currently on iPadOS 14.4.2 and thinking about updating to 14.7 or just wait until 15 lands.
I've been avoiding updating to 14.5+ since I heard a lot of complains about audio crackles.
    So, following this.

I was not aware that you could skip and jump to the next update. So I do not have to update to 14.7?
I can go straight to 15 from 13.7 when it come out?

I had not heard of this technique of a back up then update/restore, is this a common practice?

That has been the case for as long as I can remember...
...there's been some rumors about a 14.8 update that will allow the user to stay on the 14.x branch and still get security updates and update to 15 when needed.

I had not heard of this technique of a back up then update/restore, is this a common practice?

You can do either an iCloud backup or an encrypted back to a computer.
(Ie. when you do a 'restore' a full backup is made and the system is updated to the latest available version and the backup is then restored back to the device).

iPadOS15 is not that far away, 2-3 weeks or so is my best guess...

I'd wait for 15. I am also stuck on ios12 - but happy to remain there as long as there are issues with 14. (BTW - in the apps listed above - you should be able to use ATOM2 - he dropped the minimum ios requirement to ios 12.1 shortly after release)

I have Atom2 but had a few issues in AUM ... have informed the dev and is working on it. Just difficult to recreate on older device.

Thanks for advice ... I will prob go to 14 and then go to 15 if this doesn’t work out. It’s a tough one ... just wish I had iOS13, would prob just stick with that, but alas that ship has sailed!

    Go for 14.7 if you’re on 12.

Look how long it took to work through the iOS 14 problems. We’re only now getting almost completely there!

Want to run the risk of being stuck on 12 for another year if 15 ends up being as bad?

iOS 12 is not a good place to be. There are too many changes deep in the OS introduced with 13 that developers will more and more decide to rely on. New apps and upgrades are far less likely to support 12 going forward.

If you were on 13.7 that would be different. But 12? No way.

  • I would go for 14.7 if I were you. I'm on 12.9 2017 pro and 14.7 and have had no problems with missing AUs, it happened once on an earlier version and hasn't happened since for me.

Is that way to clean out junk that is not needed and has gathered over time?

If I read you correctly you are saying:

    1. backup iPad to computer
    2. wipe iPad
    3. restore from computer

    is this right?

Note that when you restore a backup, the process will continue to install/update all your apps. Be sure you're on a good WiFi, and you're prepared to wait. This caught me a bit by surprise as it turned out to be an overnight process. Also, you'll lose any dead apps, those no longer in Purchased.

Yes, I have notice a few (and probably more as time goes on) apps require iOS13. Still kicking myself for missing it, but will go for 14.7 I think, or maybe wait to see if 14.8 materializes. Thanks

Thanks, that is reassuring that you have had few issues on a similar iPad.
