Audiolayer quite low sound (velocity) problem with Akai Mini Mk3
Hello everyone.
When I use Audiolayer with on screen keyboard, voice sounds quite good. I tried to use the app with Akai midi mk3 today and realized that the app sounds quite low, almost can be slightly heard. I tried it with different presets (instruments) imported from various sfz files. I think this is a velocity problem, how can I solve it? I don’t have that kind of problem with other apps like Synthmaster One/2, Beathawk, Pure Acid etc.
Thanks in advance.

Since you mention the on-screen keyboard, I assume you're using the standalone version. By default, the onscreen keyboard plays at velocity 100 or so. It sounds like your mk3 is sending a lower velocity. You probably don't notice it as much in other apps because they don't have as much velocity sensitivity as the patches you've tried in AudioLayer.
Look at the AudioLayer screen while you're playing. The velocity is shown by how high vertically the note hits. The default on the onscreen keyboard will be about 80% height. Where does it it from your controller? If it's coming in about that level, then there's something else wrong. If it's coming in much lower, then it is indeed a velocity problem.
There's not a lot you can do in the Standalone version if your note velocity is coming in low. I don't see any velocity curve settings in the MPK Editor app.
There are numerous ways to adjust the response curve if you host the app somewhere. Is that an option for you, and if so, which host would you use?
Hello @wim . Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I exactly tried on screen keyboard using stand-alone version. But the situation is same even if I use it in an host app (I have AUM and Cubasis 3).
After your reply, I checked it and realized that on screen keyboard (stand alone version) sound appropriately at 80% level. It is approximately 15-20% level from Akai Midi MK3.
Is it a general problem/or normal thing, or is my Akai Midi MK3 broken?
If it is a general problem how can we adjust it for AUM and Cubasis 3?
Thank you very much.
15% - 20% velocity level is really, really low. I can't say if it's usual for that controller, if you just have a really light touch, or if your controller is defective. Sorry.
MIDI Tools has MIDI Curve + seven other useful utilities. iPad only though.
There are also scripts for Mozaic and Streambyter that can help with this if you have either of those apps. I don't see anything native for changing velocity in Cubasis 2. Cubasis 3 may have something, I dunno.
The basic idea with MIDI Curve and other solutions is you send your controller to them, and then from there to AudioLayer.
Here's just one of may threads dealing with issues like this: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/41078/midi-velocity-filter
There’s a button on the bottom left on the Akai keyboard called Full Level. Try tapping that once so it can be on max velocity. Let me know if that works.
I haven’t used a midi keyboard before. I am an electric guitar player so it is actually my first try for a midi keyboard. When I hit the notes hardly, velocity can reach this 80% levels with MK3, but as I said, I don’t know the how low, middle, hard touch on the keys are. Is it normal hit the buttons very hard to reach these 80% velocity levels?
Hello @seonnthaproducer . I tried it on Ipad but seems like nothing changed except the button light changed. It didn’t maximize the velocity level after I activated it. But I haven’t tried this Full Level button on PC. I checked if whether a signal comes from this full level button, yes it works.
Again I don’t face this issue with other apps like Beathawk, Synthmaster, pure acid, cubasis 3 intruments.
I tried it with different sfz instruments in Audiolayer, and the results are same. I should hit the keyboard buttons quite hard comparing the other apps.
Very interesting @RainyDayOnMars If it’s possible to use an app like MIDIWrench to see what the velocity your keyboard is sending, it might help.
Did you try changing the mode of the keyboard? I don’t have the Akai Mk3, but I believe one of the features was the ability to change the DAW type.
It seems like full level button only for 8 pads according to mk3’s manual, @seonnthaproducer .
”Full Level: Press this button to activate or deactivate Full Level Mode, in which the pads always play at a maximum velocity (127), no matter how hard or soft you hit them.”
Playing hard should get you to max velocity (127) or near it. If it isn't, the keyboard may be defective.
If you aren't experiencing issues with other apps when the velocity value is low, it means they are not set to be sensitive (or are only minimally sensitive) to velocity.
As mentioned up-thread, you can use a MIDI plugin to remap the incoming velocity.
