Agreed, distortion is the secret sauce for disrespectful basses and 808.
I usually prefer a filter before the distortion/overdrive/saturator and then another after for a bit more control.
Especially since the saturators usually bite quite hard on the filter resonances
(ex. Bleass Filter -> Bleass Saturator -> Bleass Delay as one example, love all the Bleass stuff).
