Ever Heard of The Open Source Synth Called "Surge"?

edited October 2021 in General App Discussion

I saw a video demo by Roger Linn (the inventor of the Linnstrument, among other accomplishments) on the Surge site. Anyone here try it yet?

It is made for Linux, macOS and Windows.

  • EDIT: Ah, seems this is not the first thread on this synth, however it has been a while since anyone mentioned it.

  • I know it since years and it's an excellent synth with loads of modulation options.
One of the few synths that has a similar architecture as the Clavia Nord Lead 3.

  • It’s such a pity that it can‘t be released for iOS/iPadOS. AFAIK due to the AppStore‘s incompatibility with the open source license GPL.

  • Thanks, was not aware of this one. Lots in there for a preset monkey like me.

  • I use it on the Mac. It’s amazingly good.

  • Installed. Why my midi keyboard lag with this synth? Same thing on all preset. No lag with other synths.

It’s only relatively recently (in respect to Surge’s lifetime) that it has gone open-source/freeware.

To put it simply, Surge is a superb synth and was worth every penny the developer used to charge for it.

It’s only problem - like many other excellent synths - was Serum.

  • You all might like Vital, as well.

  • Yeah it's a great synth. It nearly died the death a few years ago, but it was made open source and some devs picked it up and began to breathe life into it. Glad it's still going strong!

  • I've contributed a little bit of code to Surge, and spent some time a couple months ago trying to compile it for iOS. I ran into trouble with some of the file system dependencies they use, but I do hope to give it another try at some point.

Distribution is another issue, since Surge's license isn't compatible with the App Store. Personally, I just want to be able to use it for myself, but it would be cool if there were some other distribution option...

I have heard of a few open source projects whose license holders were willing to license to an iOS developer (that was planning on doing the project as an open source project) using one of the open source licenses that is App Store compatible. I don't recall which license it was, though.

  • i had not heard of it, but just got it and wow, what an incredibly deep synth. very cool. would love for this to come to iOS. @chowdsp take my $ !

    That's excellent!
To install non-AppStore apps, you should be able to provide a signed certificate for installation of a non-AppStore ipa package on the iDevice. That's what companies do for example, to roll out internal apps that should not be on the AppStore.
