Midi AUV3 that allows me to quickly change scales and map to MPD midi controller?

I am looking for an AUV3 midi plugin I can use in Cubasis 3 that would allow me to easily change scales and then map the scale onto my Akai MPD226 controller. I can do this easily in BeatMaker 3 but I do not like using BeatMaker that much as I do ambient music mainly with virtual synths. Scale bud is close but filters out notes so some of my pads make no sound when I hit my them. What I would like to do is choose a scale like say D harmonic minor and then map all the notes of the scale onto all my MPD pads so I can play that scale on a virtual synth. Does this sort of plugin exist?

  • Rozeta scaler should have you covered. It’s one of the plugins in the rozeta suite.

  • Cool, thanks, I already even have that. Is it straightforward to set up, any tricks I should know?

Alas that is not what I am looking for, “out of scale notes” it offers quantize up or down or reject. This leaves either repeated notes, or wholly off notes on my MPD pad. Not what I am looking for which is the ability to play the whole scale uninterrupted by repeated notes, or non sounding pads, on the MPD pads. BeatMaker 3 does offer this cabability, so I know it’s possible.

  • It’s frustrating because scaler is close, it detected and mapped my MPD controller instantly. Perhaps I should make a feature request of scaler?

Maybe cook up a Mozaic script or something...

  • I am not a coder. I would think I am the not the only person who wants to do this? It exists already in BM3.

I think the Mozaic script Simple Scaler might do what you want. It has a "white keys" mode where, if your controller is sending only C major notes, this mode will play the scales without repeated or missed notes.

If the controller is sending chromatic notes then there's a mode for that too but there would be gaps between octaves.

You can select root note and scale via AU parameter automation.

  • Can I use a script with Cubasis 3? I was hoping to just have a plugin with a GUI. Surely I am not the only person with this workflow or it wouldn’t be a feature of BeatMaker.

Mozaic is an AUv3 plugin and the script has a basic GUI. Follow the link I posted earlier to see what it looks like and to read about. I can't say whether it can work in Cubasis 3 or not as I don't have Cubasis 3.

Maybe some helpful person will read this and be willing to give it a try for you.

You may not be the only person with that workflow, but I can say it's the first time I've seen a post from someone needing it. Most scaler type apps are geared toward keyboards, not controller pads. BM3 is built from the ground up around a pad grid model.

  • I mainly use a controllers with built-in support for scales... (LaunchPadPro Mk3, and nanoKey Studio).

I've not read thru the manual for the MPD226 but maybe it allows the user to create custom scales or presets for the scales one uses the most? (Ie. start with programs for basic major and minor scales in favorite keys, the MPD editor should have some kind of auto-populate pads feature, at least the MPK Mini Mk2's editor had it).

There might be some other midi-filter AUv3's out there that have some kind of midi learn function built-in...
...but Mosaic is the only one that comes to mind and there's plenty of ready made scripts for it already.
(What would be needed is the list if midi-notes the controller outputs and a translation table mapped to a selected scale/key with octave offset or something similar as the 16 pads only cover 2 octaves in 'scale mode').

Still it will become a chore with the AUv3 filter apps when they need to be loaded onto every single track...

  • MPD does have a pad editor but it is a chore and involves a lot of fiddling with individual pads, and it must be done manually for each pad bank on the controller. With BeatMaker it’s like 2 clicks and everything is mapped out including different octaves in the pad banks. I am really surprised no one else does this, it makes playing in key a literal no brainer for poor keyboard players like myself.

Many people do ... just generally more with keyboards than pad style controllers, and maybe not as concerned with skipped/doubled notes, I guess.
