Atom 2 - uses for layers and patterns

Hi! Inspired by another thread I thought I'd inquire how folks are using these features and perhaps gain insight into how they can be useful.

I have been using the filter setting for midi and directing the different midi channels to various synths. It would be nice to be able to manipulate the looped midi on each "track" (a single midi channel, with its assigned instrument) in a similar manner to how patterns allows launching variations. Patterns will allow switching all 16 channels at once, and it'd be nice to be able to switch out "clips" on a specific midi channel only. I presently will double tap the notes on a midi channel and then create a new performance, but of course I have now lost the first iteration, and it'd be nice to be able to have that part preserved somehow to be re-introduced.

I feel like I must be missing some obvious way of working that the layers and patterns were meant to facilitate! Please help me understand this amazing software. Thanks!

If you want to switch the clip/pattern for one midi channel (or instrument) and not others, you will want to use one instance per instrument -- which was kind of the creator's original vision of how people would use it.

  • Ah - and then simply use patterns for variation. I see! I suppose that with some mapping I could use a controller to do the swaps and bring the active instance to the fore, perhaps even with different colors interface to make easy recognition of which channel/instrument is onscreen.

I am pushing my 2nd Gen ipad pro 12.9 Aum template rather hard at the moment - will many Atom 2's be much more work for the CPU? I guess I'll try and see!

Thanks for the advice, much obliged.

  • Layers is to see what you have in the other instances of atom 2. Say you have a chord progression in one instance on atom 2 but want to write a baseline in a second instance. Simply click layers, select the layer you want to see from the other atom 2 and you can see (see only) the chord progression. This way you can draw in the baseline for example, while seeing what notes/chords are in your chord progression. I use this all the time to draw in leads or bass lines.

  • Oh - that is really useful!

I can't wait to get home from work tonight - I am excited to revamp my Aum setup to reflect these ideas.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

Since Atom 2 was designed to have an instance per clip per instrument, it was designed for each instance to be very lightweight. The original intention was to have each instance correspond to a single pad on a controller like a Launchpad or Ableton Push -- and if one has a Launchpad Atom can automatically be used as a clip launcher.
