solved - OT: Text reader for iOS?
When I do searches all I come up with is a "Text to Speech" app - all I am after is a simple text reader/editor app for iOS that is not subscription. Not looking for free! I found a couple, but are only for iOS 8.something and below. Something like the Microsoft Notepad app on windows, essentially.

There are some nice features in Accessibility under 'Spoken Content' you can enable 'Speak Selection' and/or 'Speak Screen'.
Speak Selection adds an option to speak the selection when you've got text selected.
(You can select which voice to use in the Voices menu).
If you want a text editor, check out Drafts or 1Writer.
If you want the app to read text out loud to you, check out Voice Dream Reader. You can also use it to visually read the same content. It will also save your place when reading multiple longer pieces of text.
I think part of your difficulty finding something is your use of the ambiguous word “reader”. Microsoft Notepad is not a “reader”. You the human are the reader. 😊
Edit: some other less-simple apps to check out include Textastic and Obsidian.

Documents has a built in one much like Notepad and as an app is very useful for other purposes…

hmmm, the generically accepted term for an app that "reads" text is a Text Reader - And yes we the human "read" or indeed, "red" (spelt phonetically so you get my use of tense there as it is the same spelling in the real text) however in the vernacular it is widely accepted that non-human, inanimate and inert things such as programs and applications (a word which also really started with a quite different meaning to the modern - last 70 years or so - use of the word) can read: instructions, diagrams, text et al. Ergo using the term text-reader, is I think, quite legitimate.

Documents is a great, full-featured free app for everything most people would ever need. The ridiculous subscription is only for VPN and PDF editing.

I think your terminology is causing confusion: “reader” isn’t something most people associate with a plain text editor.
Boom! I’d forgotten about Brett’s list. That’s perfect. It doesn’t have Obsidian on it, but otherwise is very comprehensive and useful.

On the Oz App Store when I install it the option is 18 a month??

Most other text editors/readers on iOS don't even have full text search over more than one file.
Had to bury Textastic for that reason.
Documents does that. And it's one of the best pdf readers, file managers and cloud storage clients.
