About to get an iPad 3rd gen - USB c adapter questions..
With the older lightning, I could get a charging adapter that also had a standard USB port - cannot find one for the iPad 3rd gen (with the USB C port) does one exist?
Also is there one that has charge and an audio out (3.5mm port) as well?
Thanks
PS: only been researching genuine Apple as most 3rd party devices I have bought in the past have either been dodgy or simply did not work with an iPad.

This is a wealth of information:

Apple do make an adapter that allows both USB and charging, but unfortunately it's quite expensive because it also has an HDMI port that you probably don't need:
https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MUF82ZM/A/usb-c-digital-av-multiport-adapter
So you might be better off with a third-party splitter, such as this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09J2MRL8S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Or you can go the powered hub route, with a USB-C hub that has pass-through charging. You'll need a powerful 60w charger to go with it. This option is the most expensive. For example if you want Apple-approved peripherals you could get this hub:
https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/HMYE2ZM/A/satechi-aluminium-usb-c-multiport-pro-adapter
With this charger:

Personally I would save the money and just get a third-party splitter that works with the standard iPad charger, and use a basic USB 3 hub and the Apple headphone adapter.
+1 for the @richardyot splitter - I’ve used one for a couple of years and always rock solid. It means you can just swap it out for the lightning CCK and avoid having to step on the usb-c hub minefield.
That’s for usb and charge, I always use an attached audio interface, so can’t offer useful advice on a 3.5mm audio out option.
I am having a similar requirement to plug my Xkey midi keyboard in, a 3.5 mm headphone, and some power for charging; I intend to buy the hub below, and return it if it doesn’t work with my new iPad Pro 11-inch 4th generation:
Belkin USB C Hub, 7-in-1 MultiPort Docking Station
* USB C Docking Station
* 85W USB-C Power Delivery 3.0
* 4K HDMI 1.4
* 2x USB-A 3.0
* SD 3.0
* Micro SD 3.0
* 3.5mm Audio Jack
unfortunately not available in my country… sigh!
If it was the headphone jack that was important for you, you can just use the $9 Apple 3.5mm to USB-C dongle with an adapter and plug it into any hub:
That at least should open up more options for you. Alternatively you could use any USB DAC as a headphone adapter.
Thanks everyone - good info there!
?
iPad 3 was 30-pin, same as my iPad 2
OP must be referring to a recent iPad Pro or maybe Air. Not likely shopping for an iPad 3.
yeah sorry - typo. I put in the third gen, and didn't add Pro - I mean the USB-C in the title probs gave it away too
I have one of these... Is this of any use to w/ a USB c iPad?
I was hoping maybe a simple lightning to USB c adapter
But is seems like they either support charging or audio, but not both!
Best to go all-new. USB-C Power Delivery is not the same as good ol' Lightning charging using 5 V from a USB adapter. It uses higher voltage, and the logic circuitry is in the connector.
thanks - not sure I'd want to go adapter anyway
You will find plenty on Amazon. Just make sure it has PD port that allows charging. I got this for 9.99€ and it works fine.
Update - didn’t see the thread creator meant iPad 3 pro, therefore my comment was irrelevant.
ok, got most of the bits organised at Apple - but still looking for a USB-C hub that allows the power through to the iPad and has a USB standard port and an audio jack that allows audio out from the iPad.
I've seen the ones mentioned in the thread, but they seem way "overkill" for what I need...is there anything (of quality) within those specific parameters? Power thru;USB-C port (obviously) single USB A port and the 3.5 audio jack.
I use this one (has some more, but after one year I have no problems):
https://www.baseus.com/products/6-in-1-usb-c-hub
thanks - seems the new version has dropped the audio jack
https://www.belkin.com/usb-c-7-in-1-multiport-hub-adapter/P-PVC003.html
found this one - more than I need - but Belkin are still a solid brand, yes?
Should be fine, and the price is not too bad.
cool, thanks. haha a bit more down here in Oz, ($108) but that seems to be about the norm
One of these from Amazon does the trick. Two USB-C inputs and one power input. Really really handy.
EDIT: you can plug in a USB-A cable with an adapter and it will work. You can also plug in a Apple USB-C to 3.5mm jack adapter and that works too.
nice! thanks
Hot tip: If you cut off one of the ends it grows back two more.
Is that a female lightning port? That’s kind of rare, isn’t it?
That’s USB-C, I believe. The lightning symbol I think indicates that it is for power (via usb-c)
