What are some must have apps to pair with AUM? I'm interested in experimenting with some generative MIDI, but I also want to be able to do standard sequencing.

Looking at whats on sale right now, there are Cem Olcay's Bud apps, mLFO, mKER, and ZOA. Not on sale yet, but I also have my eye on Rozeta Sequencer Suite, Fugue Machine, TATAT, and LFOH! I also see ApeMatrix paired with it all the time, does it open up the routing possibilities enough to be an insta-buy? Which of these would you recommend to get started?

At some point I want to get AUBE, but there are so many other apps I want to get on this sale that I think it will have to wait.

I would love to hear any other suggestions!!!!

A somewhat under-the-radar app for semirandom sequencing is Arthur Kerns’ midiGATEs. I use it often to produce generative streams of MIDI.

I think it really depends on you and what you like using. One app that's missing there is Atom2, which is very useful if you want a piano roll in aum. A few of Cem's apps are very useful definitely, also Zoa and Ooda. I find myself using Tatat a lot recently, though it has that bug where you need to 'reset' the ratio control right at the beginning of the session in order to keep it in time, which is super annoying.

Apematrix is not paired with AUM btw, not that I've seen anyway, it's more an alternative to it, they're both hosts. You'd really need to watch some videos on them or read the manuals to compare them. The inbuilt modulation in apematrix is fantastic and I really feel at times I should switch to ape because of it.

All in all, my advice would be don't buy too much stuff at once, buy things one at a time, get to know them, understand the limits they are imposing, use those limits as guiderails for creativity rather than getting frustrated by them, if possible. Then, move on and buy another app that will help you expand in new directions. This is the way! I wish I had done that when I started instead of buying a bunch of different stuff, most of which I never learned to use despite best intentions to the contrary.

Thanks for the words of wisdom, and the heads up on Apematrix! I thought you could use it in AUM to open up more routing. I will definitely take a closer look, but I've already purchased AUM so I'm going to take that on first.

I am a bit overwhelmed with the possibilities already, I suppose I'm not really sure how I want to use AUM exactly, I'm rather hoping I'll fall into a groove/workflow after using it for a while. I've played around with it for an hour or two now and I'm pretty sure I need to purchase some kind of sequencer right away, but I don't know if I would be better off going for a piano roll, a simple step sequencer, or a generative sequencer of some sort. My instincts lean towards piano roll, but then again I imagined I would be using AUM in a completely different way than standard DAWs like Logic Pro, so I may have to go against my instincts.

I need to do some soul-searching and watch a lot of YouTube videos. May even crack a manual if I manage to find an app that you or Doug at TheSoundTestRoom haven't covered in depth (which can't be many at this point). It feels like Rozetta Suite may be the safest first purchase, but it's not on sale so I'm in no rush to pick it up.

Thanks again for all you do for the IOS music community. You led me to the Audiobus forums in one of your videos, and as we all know there is no looking back once you jump into the Audiobus rabbit-hole, as there is simply no better source of info on IOS music production apps. Except maybe Gavinski's Tutorials and TheSoundTestRoom...

    Thnx!

Yes I also prefer sequencers in general, but it's often quite handy to have a piano roll to record midi into. There's also that very useful free Midi Tape Recorder app by Geert Bevin. That can also record mpe btw. Definitely Rozeta Suite is a good place to start, I wouldn't worry about whether it's on sale or not as it's so cheap anyway for what you get! Some of the plugins in Rozeta now have better single app alternatives. For example I personally prefer Bounce Bud to Rozeta Particles, there are better arps than the Rozeta arp etc, but as an entire package it's still a phenomenal collection, and I use Bassline a lot, not just for basses but also leads.

Oh, When using AUM, another app I use a lot is Xequence AU Keys, as a superior alternative to the AUM keyboard. It doesn't have a Latch function, which is very frustrating, but is very useful otherwise.

Nor have I. But, given the price, $3.99, I think, how much difference does it make?

I picked up Speakers, Springs, Lines, and WoodValvet…just waiting on Fabfilter now…ProR2 and Twin 3 🤞🏼oh and drumcomputer…

Will Pro R2 go on sale so soon after they just brought it out? I'd be surprised, but who knows.

They are on sale now! Pro bundle has not changed price (for me), but all the individual apps are discounted ~20-40% off, including Pro R2.

    Yup! got’m now!

  • Scaler 2 down to £12.99.

  • And yeah, Mela 3/4, combining various midi modules together you could make some wild, powerful arps!

Besides StepPolyArp and Cems app is there any other Arpeggiator AUV3?

Aphelian, Mela 3/4, some 4pockets apps. Compiled a list of arpeggiators on https://appraven.net/collection/71137380

Arpeggist from VirSyn is a simple and great value arpeggiator.

BTW, I forgot to thank you for the multi-tap delay list. 🫶

Not auv3 though, no? The question was about auv3 arps!

This thing never goes on sale. I think the dev posted here that he was giving up iOS development. A shame, as it looks pretty cool.

Yeah I think he's awol, so God knows if it will get updated. It's probably cheap tho no? Worth a punt if you like a different approach to arping

Ah that’s a bummer. I love his apps. Great for experimental stuff. Cality is my personal favorite but I use Autony a lot too. Damn, that’s a shame.

Thanks! Don’t have Apelian or the 4Pockets Arp. I didn’t even know Paul made an arp. Mela has a great one though. I own a handful I was more curious than anything since there aren’t nearly as many arps as there are sequencers. Even though they can be just as fun.

Uwyn LLC has released ShowMIDI as a free download
It’s an open sourced multi-platform application that allows you to visualise MIDI activity

  • @onlydeals , I’m really not trying to push my own stuff, just pointing out that there are loads of tremendous free apps out there so you can have a play around without spending any money. Other than AUM (whole album is done in AUM) and GeoShred all of the apps used on this album are free (I think GeoShred play is also free at moment)

  • So many good sales!! Too many, perhaps…

    Question:
Twin3 vs Mela4. Which one would you go for?

Mela 4 for sure. It’s my favorite synth on iOS. Twin 3 is close though, and is amazing in its own way.

Twin3 big fan here, but Mela4 is much more than just a synth! So if I had to make a choice between the 2 I would definitely go for Mela4 too.
