@Gavinski & others who I think have mentioned Glitchscaper in the past, how different is Glitchscaper’s sound palette from Beatcutter’s? Is it close to the latter’s wild glitchy weirdness when taking live input or does it bring something unique?

Im always on the lookout for apps which can generate scratchy glitchy lofi type rhythms or textures.

Only tested it briefly on some talk radio segments but it sounds really good. Definitely a unique vocal effect. On iOS anyway.

They say it is based on Dials. Does that mean, if you have dials, it is redundant?

It has been so long since I used Beatcutter, and I haven’t used Glitchscaper much yet, so I don’t feel qualified to comment really.

You might have to decide that - it is basically the compressor section from Dials with an added switch to add tube saturation and an EQ switch to boost the bass. On. Desktop it is free for existing owners of Dials.

    Altispace2 @ 3.99 I’m in!
Just got Springs. Very happy.. Best reverb I’ve heard for dirty dub snares on iOS. I love reverbs.

Very interested in this as well! I already have fieldscaper and I love it. Looking for the next one.

  • @craftycurate @hghon Hopefully, you'll get some testimonials, but in the meantime here's a few videos on Glitchscaper. The third one is 40 minutes long...

A somewhat under-the-radar app for semirandom sequencing is Arthur Kerns’ midiGATEs. I use it often to produce generative streams of MIDI.

I’ve never seen his apps on sale 😢

Cheap enough! One of my most used midi apps, loooove it!

Yes I have that & agree 🤓 I was thinking of MidiSteps & MidiDreams

Thanks for those ... I've been working through those already, trying to get a sense of what kind of sound I can get out of it, especially as a live effect.

Also there's been a 1.1 update recently but I don't think anyone's covered that on Youtube afaik.

  • edited November 2023

Anyone who has considered Glitchscaper in the past should definitely pick it up at this price. The recent update that added the mulit-view screen for one channel make it a lot easier to get into the app. Mute all channels except one, set steps to 4 and pulses to 2, have tone on smooth and spacy, and start generating percussive sounds for your next ambient piece. Easy peasy. Easy enough to glitch it up in all kinds of ways, too, of course. Just follow the 40 minute Igor whisperer video.

I never really liked the output I saw of any Beatcutter video, but this one I like.

That doesn’t do anything regarding sound, from what I remember - you can see what was added on the appstore. It’s a VERY good update, though, as it adds a single page view, which me and quite a few other people find preferable to the way the initial version was set up. If you like the Beatcuttter sound, Glitchscaper will definitely enable you to do similar stuff, in a more accessible package with quite a few differences in features.

Thanks that's useful ... I think the comment of yours I remember was about the 1.1 update adding the new handy all in one screen or something of that ilk.

Glitchscaper does seem more accessible overall, but beyond Youtube I cant Never really got into BeatCutter - the difficulty of getting any sound of it beyond a weird scratchy mess is still stopping me trying to harness it more.

Seems to be a lot more overlap between Glitchscaper and Spacefields, certainly as live audio processors. I bought Spacefields a while ago but haven't really used it, so probably worth digging it out.

I did learn how to use Beatcutter properly, it also can be used a bit more subtly, and you can learn to make it do what you want, it definitely has a logic to it, but I just found it too convoluted, didn’t enjoy it the process or the results much in the end - just my personal experience. I went through various phases regarding it but in the end I stopped using it.

Yes, that all in one screen in Glitchscaper is what I referred to as the single page view above. Glitchscaper is easier than Beatcutter, I think, but the manual is quite hard going, for me, so if you manage to find a tutorial video that explains it well, that will definitely be a preferable way to learn it, I reckon.

This is the most helpful one I've found so far, from the same Youtuber who did a great BeatCutter one:

I'm also trying to find out if Glitchscaper has any internal parameter modulation, as there is with Spacefields ... as this would really take it up a notch ...

  • Here is the multi-view for the first generator, G1. The curves you see will internally modulate that parameter (level, filter frequency, glitch, comb, etc.). You can modify the curve shapes by turning the knobs, as I’ve shown here.
In addition, there are about 85 AU parameters available.

Yes, plenty to modulate. This is called the single page view though, multi is the other one, the original one
