Fluss 1.1: now playable with MIDI

Fluss is now playable via MIDI!

  • Load Fluss as an AU instrument and you can play the grain engine like a 3-voice synthesizer
  • Switch to MIDI mode in the "scale window" (or simply start sending MIDI notes)
  • "Dynamic Envelopes" for the MIDI notes are derived from the current settings of the grains (i.e. grain window, grain size, density) so the character of the notes matches the character of the grains

Also:

  • AU Parameters also accessible directly via MIDI CC (see manual for the list)
  • Record button exposed as an AU parameter - for MIDI learn in AUM etc.
  • Freeze-hold function exposed as an AU parameter - for MIDI learn in AUM etc.
  • Preset Batch Export function replaces Backup folder in Files
  • More robust Scala import (more resilient against invalid/malformed files)
  • Success message will be displayed when importing a Scala file

It was not easy to come to a MIDI input concept that didn't break or conflict with the original design of Fluss. We tried a lot of different mechanisms and combinations, but in the end this turned out to be the most useful (and non-confusing) implementation.

  • Oooh nice thank you

  • 🔥🔥🔥

    Perfect implementation!

Ahh - lovely, thanks...! in my 1st couple of plays I'm finding that I have to manually select MIDI mode in scale rather than just sending notes but once I do that it's very cool...

  • Amazing update! Thanks!
    midi input works very nicely!

Brilliant update! Being able to play via MIDI is wonderful. It would be nice if there was the option to specify the MIDI channel for each head so it can be played as three monophonic voices.

  • This is great, adds some more depth to it :)
I hope we might be able to scrub the grains with touch at some point too, which could add some more touch expressiveness to it.

  • Oh my gosh. This instrument has been amazing for me so far after me being underwhelmed at first. Totally otherworldly sounds. This just makes it better since you no longer have to go straight up and down the scale. Can’t wait to use it with glide on.

bram, you’ve been a gold standard staple for a long time now, but this is truly an accessible work of simple genius.

I’m slightly confused by what’s actually being played here using MIDI, to be honest. If I have 3 playheads set to different points of the sample and then hit C3 three times in a row when I’m in MIDI mode, what’s happening? It sounds like it’s cycling through each playhead in turn (first note orange, second note purple, third note blue) and then going back to the start on the fourth note, but I’m not entirely sure.

    That’s exactly what’s happening indeed!

It cycles through the playheads. Hainbach liked that about his Oberheim, so we did the same thing here.

  • I was only kinda/sorta interested in this app until I saw the Hainbach video above. Now I’m definitely buying it today. I’ve been pretty happy with FRMS for handling my granular duties but this will open up some new possibilities. Very cool!

  • Well, that’s certainly helpful!

I think I might be the best Fluss player in the world. I can shred that thing

    Very smart implementation @brambos !! 👍
Any way Fluss Record could get this MIDI key input feature as well please? It would be great to record stuff of the fly without saving a file and directly playing with it.

I wanted to do that, but "normal" AUv3 effects can not receive MIDI. Only AU "Music Effects" can, and only a handful of hosts support that plugin mode. So I decided against it, because I'd have to do a lot of explaining to users of e.g. Garageband why they can't find the plugin etc. :)

Nothing is ever straightforward on iOS :D

Use Reverse Psychology and ask the GarageBand users complain directly to Apple why they have not yet implemented support for xxx in GarageBand :sunglasses:

I suspect there's very little feedback that gets sent to Apple regarding GarageBand...
...and it's the 'feedback bombardments' that could potentially make something happen if ever.
(I mean some may thing "No Feedback = Everything is ok, no need to do anything").

  • I took the dive after the new implementation, and i must say, i'm impressed :)
