Looking for "evolving" "generative" "algorithmic" "emergent" "probabilistic" "AI" sequencer?

I'm not even sure what words to use to describe it, but I'm fascinated with different approaches to generating melodies and rhythms like the Turing Machine. I was imagining an IOS sequencer that incorporates lots of different approaches to this. When Strokes v2 came up, I thought it might be a good one to try. Are there others to recommend? There are a couple Reason players that look interesting but I was hoping to find one for IOS.

  • You'll find the Turing machine as well as other generative modules in MiRack as well.

Zoa and Ooda also are interesting sequencers, you can edit their trigger steps with probability

  • sqsl Temp. Good for drums and melody. Not auv3 nor even iaa though. Strokes is good but currently more of a drums sequencer.

Piano Motifs. (auv3 if you get the iap) - maybe not experimental enough for you but very musical. Riffler (not Riffer) is great, with a focus on guitar riffs, bit rock oriented but different from other offerings for sure.

Polyphase - powerful but only IAA. At least now it has ableton link.

    Nice suggestions.

I'm checking everyday for your upcoming review of sqsl temp 😁

    Me too!

So you wouldn't recommend it for someone like me, looking to bring in more ambient samples to it, right now?

  • I know! I'm having trouble pacing myself. Too many new apps, other things I'm on the beta for, downloaded so many decent Sampler libraries so have been more in the mood for playing around with stuff than making vids too this past week or so. It'll come but Wires will have to be first!

Not really, but I think it might be more suitable for that soon.

Try not to get too many things at once. Sqsl Temp and Latch (think you got both?) could keep you busy for months or years. Still desperately hoping they get preset saving soon tho, that's my biggest gripe.

I'm hoping he'll had the preset saving thing soon.

Yes, I get that. My main thing is that Temp and Latch aren't available on iPhone, and I want to be able to create on iPhone as well as iPad. So I'm running through my apps, looking for what will offer me that, and meet my needs.

What do you think it needs to be more melodic in nature? I wish some of our great sequencers like octachron just had a couple features like tying and gate to make them suitable for melodic sequences. Is strokes something that would limit you to plucks and pings much like octachron?

  • Omri Cohen's YouTube channel is a great place to learn how to use some of the great sequencers available in miRack. The more recent ones start to vocus on VCV Rack 2 modules that aren't available in miRack, but the older ones cover a lot of useful ground.

What sorts of stuff do you find yourself having to re-setup given the absence of presets? I'm on the fence for these... If there's too much fiddly setup it can turn into gear I just don't use. That is, unless I just dedicate an iPad to it.

Would Sugarbytes' Drum Computer and Lumbeats' drummer apps count?

  • Senode and New Path might be worth a look. I say this rather hesitantly because I’ve bought them but not really used either to any extent so far.

  • miRack / VCV / modular - build your own generative sequencers.

  • dot Melody by Olympia Noise

SunVox has effect commands that can be combined for generative music.

Woah, thanks a ton for this! I'll start with this Drambo patch. Much appreciated!

Cheers. Speaking of Drambo patches, a new one just landed that can be a generator of chords, noises, and rhythmic stuff. Check it out, that guy is very good at making accessible UI inside of Drambo.

It's currently a more pluck and ping thing. Needs gate lengths etc. Also, notes have to be entered specifically as you want them. This is not personally what I look for in a sequencer made for ambient. Something like sqsl Temp is great for that because it allows you to see where to press to play any given note in a wide range of scales but you can also choose out of scale notes. The ability to create mutating melodic sequences has been well thought out. In Strokes there is no overall scale setting that allows for happy accidents. I'm not putting anyone off Strokes if they want a drum machine for electronic music etc but for ambient it would not be my melodic sequencer of choice. The happy accidents in strokes are all about about rhythm, not melody, and in this department it excels.

  • Literally nearly everything. In Temp, for example, notes, triggers, velocities, gates, scales and much more. This aspect is something that will get tedious for the vast majority of people who are used to being able to save and recall sessions. Some limitations are good, some are just annoying and time consuming. For me, this aspect is definitely in the latter category.

Thank you for the in-depth response. I'll hold off on strokes until it can do more. I'm crossing my fingers... It looks very powerful.

Not always, and I'll definitely be exploring Temp and Latch on the iPad, but I'm more likely to do that when at home. Even at home, my phone is always with me, and my iPad is less often with me, so I dedicate certain times of day to it for music.

I love the compact simplicity of the phone for sketching out sounds wherever I am (I spend a lot of time in medical centres and hospitals since my cancer diagnosis, so my phone is great for this, and I always have mobile internet to connect to with it for downloading and importing samples and files etc).

True- remember though that you can always very easy use your phone as a mobile hotspot that your iPad can connect to - I do this a lot
