sqsl Temp. Good for drums and melody. Not auv3 nor even iaa though. Strokes is good but currently more of a drums sequencer.

Piano Motifs. (auv3 if you get the iap) - maybe not experimental enough for you but very musical. Riffler (not Riffer) is great, with a focus on guitar riffs, bit rock oriented but different from other offerings for sure.

Polyphase - powerful but only IAA. At least now it has ableton link.

    Cool.
    But why not Riffer?
It is generative too. All the Audiomodern stuff is great for evolving generative style. Most have powerful evolving generative options.

I just meant that people easily confuse the two. Not dissing Riffer, though for whatever reason it is one that never ended up making it into the generative midi apps I tend to reach for. Love those ratchets though.

Edit: RIFFER IS Great with its 4 lanes of midi out to different channels. Like setting different gate and note lengths for each lane and locking two while having the remaining continue to randomize. Feel like it's much more style agnostic since it's not generating midi within any genres of music.

RIFFLER always feels distinctly rock to me, and certainly guitar-sounding given how well picking patterns (unique to guitar playing) are translated into the riffler output. Riffer doesn't sound like picking at all.

  • There are two apps: Riffer and Riffler. Riffler is the guitar riff based one. Riffer is significantly different.

  • As a tangent, Riffler does generate some very inspiring riffs to learn on guitar, imo. Great learning tool if you learn by ear (me) or tab (definitely not me but I can appreciate how helpful that can be!).

  • Strokes should be another option. Just got it last night but I am having a great deal of bugs right now.

Havr you tried it with anything melodic? This new update with the sampler is really out of left field and cool. Not sure what to make of strokes anymore.

I haven’t been able to use samples at all because of a bug that doesn’t allow me to load any of them. I have installed and reinstalled, turn off and on… so idk…. I have been able to sequence drum computer and Sitala so far.

Ah, do you have melodic ambitions with strokes? I don't need more drum sequencers. I want more melodic options.

Absolutely do. But I spent so much time trying to figure out how to load the samples that I have not tried anything melodic yet with the sequencer.

    We await your findings, sir!

  • Hey, just a note re Strokes.

There are many melodic accidents to be had by feeding it with notes, say from Piano Motifs while the channel note program function is active. The notes get layered over and over across the 8 channels - its gReaT - currently there is a bug where all note offs only get sent to midi channel 1 which I'm sure will get fixed. The latest update places a midi keyboard on the screen to manually program notes which is getting in the way but I've asked if it can be changed. With all the modulations available, baked into each pattern (as they are like envelope followers) it is soooooO ripe for happy melodic accidents and ambient.

I was just getting comfortable with it and now it has samples too - I didn't need them but hey! Once the on screen keyboard 'goes' i'll be back to more melodic fiddling.

Oh my! Strokes has a sampler now... I may have to bite but word of bugs has me leery to jump in.

    Ooh… you have my attention.

  • These are some to look at:

    Fugue Machine (AUv3)
    Gestrument Pro
    Seaquence (not IAA)
    Xynthesizr

I've used all of these extensively except Seaquence.
