A good iOS delay

  • Imaginando are definitely guilty of that - the FRMS preset packs, while interesting, are mostly soooo busy they're almost impossible to use as is inside any kind of mix. One-key wonders, as a friend recently called them. Experimental presets are great fun but there should be a balance ideally between experimental and useable.

I use Imaginando’s K7D a lot. It does a very nice straightforward tape delay but you wouldn’t know that from the presets.

Yes, somehow devs think that presets should be completely psychotic craziness, instead of some subtle ones that are actually useful. When tamed K7D is nice.

Always wanted to like this one, but don't. The presets sound pretty much unusable and / or uninteresting on anything I put them on. For spectral delay, Magic Delay by GS DSP is really far superior.

I own most of them.. I always reach for these 1st because they sound great + fit very well in a mix..

    • ODC - Audio Damage
    • Delay3000 - Nembrini
    • Stereo Delay - Blue Mangoo

    Delay3000 is great. Seconded.

Also I’ll echo Other Desert Cities. I like TTAP, Kosmonaut, YaleD, K7D as well.

There are a couple of good free ones too.

  • Yes Delay 3000 ftw!

Mentioning just because it's a different approach...

    https://patchstorage.com/velocity-midi-echo/

Produces rich and complex delay patterns by echoing notes at variable velocity over time.

Each echo knob represents an echo of the incoming note at a division of the host tempo set using the Del and Mult knobs. Steps set at 0% velocity are skipped.

Echos can be sent to a separate channel using the Echo Ch. knob.

The Echos knob is a quick way to set a fixed number of echos at the same velocity as the original, making it easy to adjust the steps to add variety to the sequence.

Most people don't think of MIDI and Echo in the same sentence. But, it has some advantages such as allowing control over the volume of each echo and automatic cutoff when new notes at the same pitch come in. At any rate, it's different, and fun to experiment with.

There's another, which is simpler and more rhythm based. I prefer the velocity midi echo above usually though.

Other Desert Cities is awesome, but I keep going back to AD Dubstation 2 and BLEASS Delay TBH. ODC tends to overwhelm whatever I put it on (it's probably me). It's simple and intuitive to dial up a good basic delay sound on Dubstation, and the pitch shift on BLEASS is easy to wrangle and oh so fun.

Dubstation is a lesser quality delay to me. Doesn’t sound very good.

Dubstation is my favorite when I want to dial it in myself. It is very easy to use. I've never had a complaint about the sound quality. Timeless is my other standard for basic sounds.

Magic Delay and ODC for weirder stuff.

Worth mentioning here that Mela 3 midi modules can be combined to make very interesting delays. Yes, midi delays have a lot of advantages.

I agree! I mean DS can definitely add a bit of grunge, if you configure it to do so. I suppose if I just wanted crystal clear digital delay it might not be the one I'd reach for, but I love that it sounds organic and adds a little character. Plus it has a nice easy ping-pong feature. Can't please everyone though.

I'm after a decent delay for iOS. Any suggestions?

Take the easiest one for what you are looking for. If you are looking for a ABC delay, take the free Nembrini one. If you need something else, let us know.

Interesting & a little disappointing (for them ?) that no-one mentions dsp fx hardware/software meisters Eventide ; their Ultratap & Crystals for pitchdelay .
They have other delay algos I was hoping they would port to IOS but things seem to have slowed on that front .

Also SugarBytes offer various delays in various multifx packages with Turnado, Looperator & Effectrix if you can talk them down from the crazy shelf

  • talk them down from the crazy shelf

    My favorite shelf

  • True! Looperator is capable of some very fine delays etc. People get stuck on the mad presets and forget the power under the hood, which can lead to results as crazy or as restrained as you like! I must revisit looperator, fantastic app which I haven't used in a very long time

ElasticFX has a comb filter delay, VCFdelay, Downecho, Pingpong, Graindelay, DubDelay, Dualdelay, Reversepitch delay, and spectral delay. It often gets overlooked because it’s IAA.

Tonestack Pro has a Tape Echo, Reverse Delay, Memory Boy clone, space echo clone, pitch shifted BBD, Multi tap, ducking delay, artificial double tracker, and studio delays

Mirack’s Portland Weather (16 tap rhythmic delay) , JIRA JIRA Echorec (based on magnetic disk) NYECHOEcoeco Echorec (BINSON homage with 6 play heads)

Drambo racks: CHOADELAY, DIYTAPE, Many Paths, Memory Backwards, Shards

SunVox modules: Queries DAT Delay, Keres Piggyback, Keres FreqDelay, SYNX MeltyVerb, Taneb MetaPitch, echo2 Heavenscape FX 2, echo2 Ouroboros,

Turnado’s Pattern Delay, Reverse Delay, Pitch Delay

    Reelbus has a nice echo

MelaFx has a delay with Cross Inverted, Cross, Inverted, and Normal modes

RE-1 is a virtual tape machine

I really like K-Devices TTAP but it doesn’t allow you the option to save your own presets or import/export. Seems like a missed opportunity

I always forget you can use SunVox as an effects unit
