Choosing a spectrum analyser
I'm choosing a spectrum analyser.
What factors should I be considering in my selection, and what might be the top picks in this app genre?
Comments
I'm still looking for a good one too, one that supports AUv3.
Haven't found one yet, at least not one with a feature set good enough for a bit more advanced audio work.
Wow, really? I had greater hopes than that! I'm looking for one for desktop too. Preferably the same one for both platforms.
How about fabfilter pro-q3 and blue mangoo's oscilloscope. Lots of videos on YT to show you their cool features before buying
You're looking for something like Audition (aka CoolEdit) has?
What options have you explored?
AUv3s with spectrum view:
Auditor
AnalyserFX
Spectrum (Solaria)
TB Spectrogram
Audition's FFT analyzer has been my go-to analyzer for a long time indeed! 😊
If that one was available on iOS+AUv3, that would be very cool indeed.
There is no shortage of free spectrum analyzers. Why not start with some of the free ones and see what they lack for you as you apply them in real-world scenarios?
On iOS you are not going to get the same feature set as on desktop, but my iOS go-to is Toneboosters. They are the only one I am aware of available on both ios and desktop.
On desktop, some of the more useful / less common features include multiple channels and FFT visualization. Developers including Hornet, SIR Audio and Voxengo all offer limited free versions of their spectrum analyzers. Voxengo SPAN (Plus) seems to be the most widely used. Schulz Audio Spectrum 2 is my preferred on the desktop, for the combination of features and look & feel.
Another vote for Pro-Q on iOS, I like the ballistics they use for the analyzer myself.
My vote is for Pro-Q3 also.
TB equalizer is good enough for me
Have you checked out SPAN by Voxengo for your desktop? Music schools and universities seem to like that one. I could not find an iPadOS version of SPAN, however.
Have you checked out TB’s Free Spectrogram plugin? It would be interesting to see how it worked alongside their TB Equalizer.
TB spectrogram is fine, and free (IIRC). Does spectrograms and spectrums, AUv3, and you can change the colour scheme. I’ve used it for coursework for a course that assumed a desktop analyser.
I generally want to eq when I spectogram so I haven’t used it
Drambo has an integrated one that pops out when you hold any audio input, it’s also worth checking
For desktop I recently found out sonicvisualiser.org (win/mac/linux) and it’s a beast.
Does much more than spectrum/spectrogram, you can annotate files, have several visualization layers, etc.
Really powerful, perhaps too powerful for everyday need, but I’ve been working on recreating a sound from addictive synthesis and this was a life saver to determine frequency/power/envelope for the partials.
