Yamaha pss series

Which iOS fm synth comes close to the tones of the pss series? Maybe this video would help in expression and tone! There is a delay pedal involved too

  • For 2OP FM the OPL app is hard to beat...
It's based on the same chips used in the early Yamaha 2OP FM synths.

Many of the early PSS keyboards were also pretty basic Square Wave synths. (PSS-100 and PSS-130 being a few of them).

The PSS-100 series is quite easy to emulate with most synths that provide vibrato (frequency modulation) and tremolo (amp modulation) and a high-pass filter to cut out the low-end.

The PSS-100 has a few 'square waves' that can not be emulated using pulse-adjustment.
The only way to emulate that is to 'draw' a waveform or use a WaveTable synth that can duplicate the cycle and after that apply pulse-width om top of the duplicated cycles (Drambo's WT oscillator can do this).

Many of the old sounds are very simple to recreate once knowing what makes them go beep :sunglasses:

  • Thanks Samu! I’ll jump on Opl!

Just remember it's a very dry synth and needs a bit of effects to shine (like in the video you linked).

  • Here's a video from sfm with a short walk-thru of the OPL app...

Still need to get rainbow delay. I second OPL though. One of my favorite iOS synths.
