Connecting a guitar to a USB-C iPad (with fx loaded) then out to an amp? Is it possible?

Or any other hardware for that matter. Suppose I want to have ToneStack function like an ordinary pedal board. Is it possible? I cant imagine it is without a headphone socket but I don’t know for certain. Is there an option?

    With an audio interface

  • How dim of me - I actually have several audio interfaces- but I thought they were only for inputting a signal into an iPad - I didn’t realise that they got it back out at the same time as well 😀
    Thanks……. don’t tell anyone will you? 👍

  • Ik multimedia has an interface called Axe that has an output for your guitar amplifier.

  • Yes. But the problem I ran into was only getting the Right, not R+L, so sound was going in and out. out. The funny part is I’m totally blanking on what I did to solve it. There’s a few ways to fix the issue. If I think of it or come across what I did I’ll share it here.

Their iRig HD2 does as well. It also has a switch to let you send the signal either with the effects chain applied or just the raw signal.

  • If your effects are hardware, pedals or pedalboard, the signal can be so hot from your pedals that it overloads the preamp of your audio interface. A relatively inexpensive, simple fix is to get a Behringer ULTRA-DI100 box. It has a 1/4” Thru to go directly to your amp and 2-20db pads to knock down that hot signal before it hits your audio interface (for recording or live).

I bought it for the 2-20db pads for a total of 40db. My pedalboard with a Big Muff and 3 other gain pedals and more, was way too hot for any audio interface.

The Behringer DI100 also has 4x12 speaker emulation, for recording or live, via the XLR output jack. It’s an active DI box, so it requires power. I got a Sabrent 4-port powered hub with on/off buttons from Amazon for less than $20. Don’t let the low price of that DI box fool you. It’s a very quiet functional DI box with 1/4” and XLR input jacks, 1/4” Thru out to your amp and XLR out to your audio interface. It also has a Ground Lift button to break ground loops.

With guitar, pedalboard, DI box and USB powered hub, you could go to a gig and run through the PA, if need be.

CORRECTION: …and XLR out to your audio interface OR PA.

  • I had one of these for awhile and it worked very well… https://xsonicaudio.com/pages/xtone
