Favorite drone machine
Hey all,
I was planning on picking up some new apps soon, and was wondering what your favorite drone maker/drone machine is?
I'm currently looking at Mononoke and rymdigare. And maybe Hilda, but that's just something I'm looking at getting anyways. If it can do what the others do -- that'd be a plus. I know it's not exactly drone related, but I'm also feverishly refreshing this page and the App Store waiting for Brams new sampler.
Let me know which is your pick, or maybe I'm not aware of another option?
Comments
Mine: Recording and looping snippets from web radio and sending them through a convolution reverb with pink noise loaded as an IR.
Spacecraft and Borderlands are also great for that.
My father was my favourite drone machine. He could drone on for hours about his Navy days, and each story would be more fascinating than the last. 😂
Jokes aside, Rymdigare is a really wild effect perfect for Ambient, but it can't necessarily create a drone. Get it anyway.
Mononoke and Hilda are fantastic for drones, and BramBos is absolutely wizard with the apps he releases. Also, if you're looking to do tape loops, you can't go wrong with the Brambos x Hainbach collab Gauss. Fluss too for granular fun! Anything by Hainbach really, ESPECIALLY the collab with Audiothing called Noises. Hainbach's the man when it comes to Ambient and Experimental fodder!
Velvet Machine is great at smearing and shaping sound. It's sorta of like a reverb, but not really. Just get it and play with the bloody thing.
Oh, and the free app elephant in the room - PaulXStretch. Turns even dodgy recordings into sublime Ambient drones by extreme audio stretching! (Note, PaulXStretch isn't meant to help adjust samples from one BPM to another. It's for taking a 3 second sample and turning it into a 30 minute drone, lol.)
PaulXStretch 👌👌👌
There are a few threads on this you'll probably find here if you search for 'drone'.
If you like your drones weird, NoInputMixer is currently one of my faves
best for my ideas:
Shoom
Sugar Bytes Factory
PaulXStretch
My current favorite is using 4 loopers in overdub mode, using feedback (tape decay) and filters etc. to bring the four drone components in and out over time, in a semi-controlled way. Then insert Rymdigare, Hilda and all your other favorites as part of this setup.
Shameless link to my Drambo patches for doing this: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/57969/enso-gauss-x4-drambo-patches
Of course this can be done in AUM, too, but Drambo has modulation and UI control knobs readily available for doing these experiments on-the-fly.
@jwmmakerofmusic you mention Velvet Machine, but perhaps the newer Cascade from the same dev is a better option? It is an amazing tool for sound design. I'm sure Velvet is great too, I just wanted to mention it for @tristan, I think Cascade covers what Velvet can do, plus more.
Droneo
There are so many but lately NoInput and Lines have been a lot of fun. PaulXStretch is a classic.
Autopad is great through the right effects. Koala is a great drone machine too. Honestly almost any synth can be a drone machine, it just depends on your tastes and exactly what you’re going for.
I admit I haven't tried Cascade yet. Does Cascade have an envelope that the "reverb" signal can follow?
You're actually asking this in the best time, check out Salome that came out a few hours ago. It's from the makers of Mononoke, and it can do similar drone sounds with your own samples/presets within the app.
Droneo but it’s ancient and portrait mode IAA only. Please dev someone produce a clone of the idea.
Koala sampler
For just drone being processed by effects, IAA isn’t the worst thing in the world. Love this devs apps though. Enumero is excellent and just got an update.
+1
Tardigrain is pretty good!
