Rig Power ~SOLVED~

edited November 2023 in General App Discussion

Hi,
So I am an instrumentalist using my iPad for live performance.
I want to (want to = MUST) power TWO things
1. my Morningstar MIDI controller which uses 9V
2. my Uni brand USB hub; which this USB hub then

  • Provides power to my audio interface (Zoom U-44)
  • Provides power, audio and MIDI to my iPad

SooOOOooo you got my set up. Currently I have a Walrus Audio brand Aetos pedalboard power supply - WHY? - because it provides (1) the 9V power for my MIDI and most importantly also provides (2) an auxiliary A/C out, which then I can plug in my Anker USB charger (supports 65Watt output) to charge my Uni USB C hub - see the link above.

All of this is sooOOOOoOOOOOOoo painful. I feel like I'm rigging something with duck tape, or coat hangers to get it all to work.

I want ONE (not two, just one) power supply that has:

  • a 9V out for my MIDI controller
  • a 5V USB out with at least 65W output to power my Uni USB hub; which then powers the audio interface and iPad

H E L P - does such a creature exist?
Why is it sooOOOooo hard to be an instrumentalist trying to use an iPad as a multi fx processor.

Sorry - just a very frustrated instrumentalist musician who wants make music, and not figure out amps and watts and plug C into B into A over E connect to G

Any suggestions on a power supply with both a 9V and and a 5V with plenty of AMPS to support my Uni USB hub??

  • QUESTION..... Can I use this 9V out from any typical guitar pedal board to power my Uni USB C hub???

  • QUESTION.... What about this product; it's a 2.1 mm barrel jack, like the pedalboard power bricks support and a USB C PD
but how many watts does it supply?

  • Hi Vmusic. Thanks for introducing me to that USB C hub. Looks nice. I’m a little confused by what you are saying. The Walrus Audio supply appears to be doing what you require and in a reasonably easy way. I am assuming that the iPad is plugged into the USBC hub via it’s main connection so that you are sending audio in and out of your zoom interface? The cable you have linked here provides power to a 9V device using the PV connection of the USB hub where you currently getting power from. It’s not providing power to the USB connection but to the other end.

  • QUESTION: What about this idea??
I buy a battery with 2 USB outputs
    (1) I use a RipCord https://myvolts.com/Ripcord - to power my Morningstar with 9V
    (2) the Second USB powers my Uni Brand USB hub (see below)
    https://uniaccessories.com/products/usb-c_8in1_hub?_pos=2&_sid=f94fa915f&_ss=r

    Something like this picture?

Are there batteries that can even power a USB C hub for very long?

@Mountain_Hamlet Yes, the Walrus Audio Power Brick does what I need. It supplies an extra A/C outlet, where I plug a charger in, and the 9V for the MIDI controller. But it's a MONSTER in size and weight. I can't fit it under my pedal board. It's over 2.25" tall.

I want EZ (sorry to rant)

  • ONE LAST IDEA:
What if I just bought 2 power banks like this:
    https://www.anker.com/products/a1335-130w-power-bank?ref=naviMenu&variant=42691850797206

I use one of the USB C outputs to power my Uni brand USB C hub. I use the other output from the power bank, with a MyVolts Rip Cord (https://myvolts.com/Ripcord), or with a Bird Cord (https://www.songbirdfx.com/products/birdcord/) to power my MIDI controller.

If I were charging both a USB C hub, and a 9V MIDI controller - and I had a power bank like this Anker one; how long would it last? Maybe that's a complicated question.

Even if it only last 40 minutes or an 1 hour; can this power bank supply enough power to the USB Hub to power the iPad, and the Audio Interface?

The RipCord USB power cables are really good. I’ve got a RipCord USB to 12V cable that I occasionally use to power my Behringer K-2 synthesizer via USB (Hub or Powerbank). No problems with the high current peak when I switch this analog synth on. No noise while playing, and the cable’s USB plug with the voltage converter doesn’t even get warm.

  • The Morningstar MIDI controller manual I saw quoted 9V and 120mA. Which controller do you have? Do you know it’s power specs?

I’m a little cloudy of what you are asking here. So tap me if I’m wrong.
You’re asking a loaded question. No one will be able to give you an accurate answer without knowing all the power requirements of all your devices. It’s not as simple as converting 5v to 9v with a ripcord that only works off usbA. Infact, ripcords are quite outdated.

Have you looked at birdsong cables, or any other usb cables that use usbC PD? These negotiate power delivery needs.

  • Hi Everyone,
Let me provide context, and the solution I've chosen. SORRY for the confusion.

My rig: a Zoom U-44 audio interface, a Morningstar MC6 Pro MIDI controller - then a Uni (Brand) USB C hub, which sends both Audio and MIDI to the iPad; and also can provide power to the iPad.

MY REQUIREMENTS: I want a power source to my Uni USB so I also charging the iPad as I use it during live performances. I did not want the iPad charging my Zoom Audio interface because it would drain the battery faster.

I knew the Zoom would /could be powered through the USB cable which runs to it, that provides audio.

I "thought" the Morningstar MIDI controller MUST be powered by 9V. It can be powered by a 9V for sure.

MY DILEMMA: I need a 9V power for the MIDI controller, and USB power to power my USB hub.
MY ORIGINAL THINKING: Since I was setting up a power brick for a pedal board to power the MIDI controller; perhaps there someway I can power the USB as well. ...... very bad thinking......

FINAL SOLUTION: Turns out the MIDI controller is also powered through USB. SooOOOooo why run A/C power to the board and try to get converters, diluters, flux capaciators etc. ~~~~> What if I just used a battery pack, used to charge laptops, cell phones, tablets.... and have the push power through the USB, and now all three: my Zoom audio interface, my MID controller and my iPad are getting power. The battery pack will last close to 2 hours, which is PLENTY of time, and as a bonus, I can pull the power on the battery pack, and the iPad will power the Zoom audio interface and MIDI controller for awhile.

    Problem Solved!!
Thank you - Everyone who jumped in and try to help.

  • well that was a white knuckle roller coaster of a ride .

@Vmusic - maybe change title from “help” to “solved” to spare others rushing to assist from the trauma.

I’m off to lie down with a camomile tea.

  • @RetroNewb Yes, I changed it and again - thanks for all your help!!
