Issues with app storage?
Alright I’m having issues using my SSD and I may be at risk of sounding like an idiot here but….it didn’t clear up any space.
I moved all my PSP libraries as well as all my AudioLayer libraries and my storage hasn’t changed at all. Am I missing something? I’m nearly maxed out so spend $100 on an SSD but it doesn’t seem to be helping currently. Any ideas guys?

Did you delete the content that was on your iPad? What were the precise steps you used? It sounds like you may have told the apps to use external storage without having also deleted the copies of the data in internal storage. Is that possible? I don't think AudioLayer automatically removes data when you choose external storage.
So I thought that was the issue because you’re right I did simply just redirect it to the SSD but when I search my files for the samples, I can only see the ones on the SSD and not in “on my iPad”
When I search Pure Synth or PSP it brings up all the files but the location lists as “Extreme SSD” none of them seem to actually be on my iPad or in my cloud storage.
I have 3 gb in AudioLayer and well over 60 in PSP so there should’ve been a noticeably big drop but it doesn’t seem to have changed any.
Did I miss a step somewhere?
The PSP definitely asked me something like "Do you want to delete content from the iPad" after changing the data folder to an external drive. Personal experience, I've done this at least twice.
Yeah it asked me that as well, which is why I didn’t manually try and delete anything. Just weird it doesn’t seem to have had much of an effect on my storage. I’m still pretty close to being maxed out lol
Did you check “recently deleted” in the files app?
Also you might try a reboot if you haven’t already.
Failing that you might have to reinstall those apps.
Nothing in recently deleted unfortunately.
Am I assuming wrong or would the entire amount of storage space from the iPad be moved to the SSD? So in the about section of settings under iPad storage PSP shows as 62 gb. Would the entire 62 gb be transferred?
To begin with, it’s the overall storage that matters. The individual app numbers can be ambiguous.
But there could be a very good chance the local storage wasn’t freed. I seem to remember reading about that being an issue with AudioLayer.
Gotcha thanks. I’m aware about the overall storage. That’s the number that hasn’t really changed which I mentioned earlier. I’m simply just asking if in theory it’s supposed to transfer the entire amount of the apps storage to the SSD or not. I guess I should’ve made that more clear somehow.
If all its fails I’ll try and delete and reinstall but I’m hoping I won’t have to do that. Our WiFi isn’t the best and it took hours to install them all onto the SSD earlier.
Switched PSP back to “on my iPad” and it still says the files are installed so that seems to be the root of the issue. Sadly I return to work tomorrow and most likely wont have the extra time to delete and reinstall everything until I have a day off again. Unless I have a short day at work over the weekend.
It doesn’t appear to be working with my usb hub anyway, but I do have one coming in the mail from Amazon. This one is fairly old as it is.
Hi. Two things I'd like to mention. First, when you delete files on the iPad, the Storage used does not decrease immediately. Instead, the space used is transferred to "System Data". This is because you cannot erase/rewrite individual disc blocks in flash storage, only the much larger erase blocks. So iPadOS will just leave the data there until it needs the space. Then, it will reshuffle existing files to create full erase blocks, and System Data will suddenly decrease..
Second, the reporting of iPad Storage on iPadOS 17 seems very flakey. I see apps like Safari fluctuating by over a GB, Mail jumped from 325 to 1070 MB, despite no change in usage.
Thanks, I’m still on iOS 16.7 but that’s good know. I never knew how that worked, actually interesting information. I’m gonna do some more digging when I have the time off but I’m hoping it’s something simple and I didn’t waste money on the SSD.
Contact GospelMusicians through their website and ask them how to reclaim the space.
Have you fully power down the iPad and powered back up?
I did and that didn’t seem to help unfortunately. Will definitely email GM and see how they think I should approach. I have a feeling a delete/reinstall will probably be in order though.
For some reason my usb hub isn’t working with it so I’m waiting on my new one to come in the mail. Hopefully I can get it sorted by then 🤞
If you switched back to local storage and the files are still there, as you’ve noted, that’s a strong indicator that they didn’t get deleted after the switch to SSD. It would be worth contacting Gospel Musicians about.
@HotStrange : did you chose "delete factory content" before enabling the external storage? In Neo-Soul Keys there is an delete factory content button that I think needs to be pressed to remove the local copy.
You won't by the way see the samples On Your iPad in Files app. They are stashed away in a not publicly accessible directory. The same is true of AudioLayer (which has an internal browser for deleting samples).
Yep gonna be sending them an email when I get off work or tomorrow morning before work. Thanks for the help! I’m report back if/when it’s resolved.
I definitely did delete them. Or I clicked the option to delete them anyway so I’m not sure what went wrong. As @wim said it’s probably time to send an email. Does AudioLayer give you an option to delete the samples or do you just delete them from local storage manually?
As an aside, how does one get this working with Decent Sampler. Is it as simple as just unclicking local and switching to disk streaming?
You delete them with the built-in browser.
Got it. Thanks!
I had a similar problem with Audiolayer last week. Sounds installed to external storage but the app storage use on the iPad was showing much greater usage than should have been the case given that the sounds had never been installed there. Offloading Audiolayer (not a full uninstall) and reinstalling sorted the problem for me.
Glad for hear that worked. Just about to head to bed now but I’ll be trying that this weekend. If it works for AudioLayer I may try that for PSP also and hope for the best 🤞
