Grand Finale 2 v TB Barricade
I already own GF2 and use it to master. However, I’ve been reading things about Barricade that intrigue me. Would it be worth it to get Barricade if I already have GF2?
Comments
Yes
For a complete mastering chain, I use toneboosters eq, then barricade, which provides the compressor and limiter.
I’m led to believe that toneboosters are pro level dsp on a par with fabfilter (I don’t own the fabfilter equivalents) so if this is what you’re after then I don’t think you can do much better. And they work on iPhone.
You can swap out the eq for something like ddmf 6144, or turn off the compressor in favour of something like magic death eye.
I’ve listened to a lot of the mastering show podcast so have learned the theory behind all of this. Whether I’m any good at mastering, I’m not sure, but the TB apps at least make me feel like I have the right gear 😄
Barricade is good, quite good. All the TB stuff is awesome.
I tend to use GF2 because it's immediate (very little to dial in) and gives what I believe is just as good results for limiting.
I don't trust either of their LUFS output metering though.
My current chain is TB eq, GF2, and Youlean metering.
So to my ears, each app compresses and/or EQs a little differently and each is easier/harder to dial in. I frequently use GF2 with Barricade and I think it sounds a bit better than without. @Jolico’s subtle glue setting in Barricade has been my go to since he posted it whenever that was. Each ear is different and we all app to our tastes, but I definitely like Barricade.
I have Barricade and Grand Finale and I have to say… Logic Pro’s “Mastering” button beats them all. 🧐
I honestly can’t disagree with that.
Not an option for me…it’s iPad only lol
I use Barricade all the time. It’s one of my go to apps and if I had to pick only 10 apps forever it would be one. I make noisy experimental music and it’s perfect for reeling it in. The AI option is awesome as well as the tape/drive saturation emulations.
I don’t have GF but Barricade is a pivotal part of the mixing process for me.
@tja mentioned Trinity and it’s also amazing. I use Barricade for mixing and then bring the whole track into Trinity to put the few finishing touches. Highly recommend.
I tried GF 2. Works decent. I do prefer Barricade when working on single tracks, but that's my personal preference. 😉
Yeah Barricade is gonna be a future purchase at some point it looks like. Hopefully next bandcamp Friday if it goes better lol
Same here. Lately it’s been Barricade on individual tracks and NoLimits for entire mixes.
@NeuM has cursed me, I’ve started moving all my track outta other DAWs to LP4I because he’s right.
😃
If you can’t use logic to master with assistant…
Here is the best options on iOS
Fabfilter over everything….economy will be toneboosters
Fabfilters limiter is insanely great…beyond barricade, but the eq of either company is comparable as well as the compressors…although I used barricade as a bus compressor a lot
Yes if you’re trying to encroach on desktop/“professional” quality, it doesn’t get much better then FabFilter and Toneboosters. The DDMF apps are up there as well.
FabFilter is iPad only, so looks like I’ll be getting Barricade
